Police: 2 arrests amid hijacking fear at Berlin airport

Two Russian-speaking men were arrested at Tegel airport in Berlin, Germany, after a witness overheard a "suspicious conversation" between them suggesting that a flight might be hijacked, police told CNN.

The incident happened at check-in for an Air Berlin flight in terminal C of the airport, where a woman overheard the two men speaking in Russian, leaving the impression that the flight was going to be hijacked, police said.

The woman notified authorities, and the men, 49 and 26, were taken into custody. They are to be questioned by state authorities.

All other passengers were also taken off the plane and questioned.

Police will not yet say where the suspects are from.

The flight was to head to Moscow, Russia, but the plane is grounded and being searched by German investigators.

The other passengers were able to depart on a different plane after several hours' delay, authorities said.

" woman overheard the two men speaking in Russian, leaving the impression that the flight was going to be hijacked, police said." talk about profiling.

Silly comment by h1kids. There's not enough info in the article to tell whether this was simply profiling, a woman who understood the Russian dialogue, etc. I would say "talk about incomplete reporting".

I think she could speak Russian herself otherwise she wouldn't know what they were saying...

I feel as though it's hard to tell if she understood the Russian or she simply thought that the russian speaking men were threatening. Does anyone have any more information on this story? Perhaps a link to a more detailed report?

I totally agree w/ the incomplete reporting bit...no mention if the woman could actually understand the men or if she just had a problem with Russians. What needs to be answered though, is if Supreme Court Nom "Pat"...I mean Kegan is actually a man or a woman. Rarrrrr!

Give me a break... It is implied that the woman could speak Russian... The German police are sophisticated enough to realized that there would probably be lots of Russian speaking passengers on a flight to MOSCOW!!!!

A German newspaper reports that the woman who overheard the conversation speaks and understands Russian, and that the two suspects had a pilot license but do not belong to an active flight crew.

I just read the German article. She overheard the men speaking in Russian and said they were discussing a planned hijacking. She reported them and they were arrested. No weapons have been found, but they both were found to have pilot's licenses. There aren't any further details yet......hope that helps.

I am constantly amazed at the lack of common sense displayed when I read posts to articles online. Oh how I miss the days of NO COMPUTERS when we didn't have to listen to such crap – we could just read the paper and to hell with what a bunch of idiots had to say.

The woman was big ear betty, who is from my work. She's the office gossip and listens in to ppl's conversations. And now she is a hero. 😉

Yes, this article implies the woman could speak Russian, but that's not the point. The point is that an artcile by a news source like CNN should be written better. This was sloppy writing AND sloppy editing. And you see exactly the kind of thoughts that result from haphazardly written articles. People go leaping to their own conclusions, and it just turns into a mess. Way to drop the ball CNN
