Making a mountain to stop the oil

See this island? It wasn't here yesterday.

The Louisiana National Guard poured in tons of sand and rock to fill a 700 foot gap in a barrier island to stop the oil from reaching the estuaries.

The gap was the result of hurricane damage in Elmer's Island, just across the bridge from Grand Isle.

Filled in, the island will now be a part of the last line of defense in Louisiana's scramble to protect it's ecologically sensitive coast. The area is also an important breeding ground for shrimp.

"It's ecologically and economically very important to the local community," Lt. Kyle Galloway told CNN.

how about using a balloon angioplasty procedure? Design it as a sufficiently stiff shaft for minimal resistance to the outgoing pressure and force it sufficiently deep into the whole, then quickly expand it with fast-acting forced cement or expanding foam into the balloon to expand it and create the plug...?

Since BP or anyone else can't stop this mess. Then all of the worlds water ways will be polluted, all seafood and wildlife will be dead. The beaches will smell more foul than they are today. Prices for fuel and food will be out of reach for the poor to obtain. Our children will not have a beach to enjoy. Hurricane Season will not help matters by blowing the oil further upstream in the waterways and polluting water tables needed for human survival.
Yet all we can do is blame and point the finger. We really need to boycott ALL oil companies! Which will never happen as everyone is dependent on their vehicles for transportation. So lets just enjoy whats left today as it will be gone in a year or two.

Hey #23, before you say stupid comments think about it. yes air is lighter than water you are very smart it is true but so what? If you would have some brain you could find a solution to that "BIG" problem. Think about it how could one deliver air to a site under water think think if you can not find a solution I will tell you in a few days. let me give you a hint: it is possible.

"If all the oil was saved the oil companies would not have an excuse to raise the prices."

Oil prices have fallen by about 13% in the last two weeks, and you believe that they can raise prices at will?

Apparently you don't read the papers. The spill is widely quoted at 5,000 barrels per day. Daily global production is about 85,000,000 barrels per day. The spill amount to 0.006% of daily production, and you think that should have a price impact?

I REALLY hope that most of these people who are posting on here aren't representative of our country. But just to be safe, I think I'm going to buy more Chinese stocks.

I stopped at a BP gas station the other day and there was a sign on the pump that said "You are responsible for any spillage." Thought it was funny.

Tim – that was tongue in cheek.
Obviously this goal is impossible. Yet that's what many of these people on here are demanding, in the case of offshore drilling.

The answer is really quite simple. All we have to do is find the Fortress of Solitude and grab one of Jor-El's crystals, and toss it in the water over the well. Then a mountain will form sealing the leak and also providing the US with ample new territory to form our 51st state.

You can burn the oil that is underwater but first you have to dig a hole in the water to reach that oil. That type of digging operation can be very costly and there is always the danger of the hole in the water collapsing and drowing the diggers. There is just no easy answer here.
