Medvedev: Brazilian visit could be last chance for Tehran

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's visit to Iran this weekend could be the last opportunity to reach an agreement with Tehran and to avoid U.N. Security Council sanctions, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said Friday.

"Given that my friend President Lula is an optimist, I will also be an optimist, and estimate it [the probability of his successful mission to Tehran] at 30 percent," Medvedev said with a chuckle. He spoke in a televised joint press conference with Lula after Russian-Brazilian talks in Moscow.

"I am very much counting on the mission of the Brazilian president to be successful," he added, switching to a serious tone.

"This could be the last chance before the U.N. Security Council makes the already known decisions," Medvedev said, referring to the U.N. decision on imposing sanctions against Iran.

"Yesterday, we discussed this issue on the phone with the United States president, bearing in mind that we need a consolidated position on this issue. And I said that, in my opinion, it is necessary to give the Brazilian president an opportunity to use the entire set of arguments that the international community has at the moment, to persuade Iran to begin cooperating," Medvedev said.

"If there are no changes [in the Iranian position], if attempts to persuade Iran in favor of relevant forms of cooperation fail, then the international community will be compelled to act according to the approaches that are also being discussed by the sextet. I would not like the situation to develop that way. Nevertheless, I can't exclude it."

The sextet refers to the six nations that have been dealing with the Iran nuclear issue - China, France, Germany, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States.

The Brazilian president, for his part, said: "I am going there realizing that the dialogue that will take place is vital and I will try to use all my power of persuasion in this dialogue," according to the translation on the Kremlin website. "I will try to do my best to arrive at some sort of an agreement. I am flying to Iran convinced that we will find it."

The Brazilian president said that it is his goal to persuade his counterpart, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, to cooperate with the international community.

"With every day bringing the talks in Iran closer, I am becoming a greater optimist," Lula said. "I was an optimist yesterday, and I am much more of an optimist today. And probably I will be an even greater optimist after meeting President Ahmadinejad."

Medvedev noted that currently there are few differences among the sextet of mediators on the Iranian nuclear problem, calling their approach a "consolidated" one.

"The general approaches are invariable, and virtually all countries adhere to them," he said.

"Firstly, Iran's nuclear program must be peaceful. Secondly, it should be controlled by the IAEA [International Atomic Energy Agency]. Thirdly, Iran must cooperate with the international community and the IAEA, and in the fourth place, Iran must observe the rules concerning the non-proliferation of nuclear technologies," Medvedev said.

The Russian and U.S. presidents discussed various bilateral and international issues in a phone call on Thursday that lasted for more than an hour and a half, according to the Kremlin press office. Medvedev and President Barack Obama discussed Iran's nuclear problem in detail, it said.

TOM, Israel does not reject international law. Israel works on the development of the country, economically, intelectually and socially. They do so under constant attack by rockets from Gaza and a enormous expense on defense. Not attack. Contrary to Iran, Israel never said that any country should be wiped out of the map. Israel does not send suicidal attacks, does not put bombs in airlines, And when Egypt and Jordan meant peace, they got peace with Israel. You cannot make peace with anyone who openly admits the destructon of a country. How can you make peace with Iran or the Hamas? Do you have any idea of how arab countries respect international law? Honor murders of daughters by their brothers or parents just because they fall love with a non-muslim, the right to kill a muslim if he converts to another religion, stoning of women to death, poor tolerance towards any other way of life other than muslim. What the heck is this? Paradise??
I still think that arab propaganda has worked wonders because it has been successfull in convincing a lot of people by misinformation, by hiding facts, by lying convincingly.

It is Iran that is under threat not Israel or the US. Iran has every right to defend itself against a nuclear attack and that is why it should continue to pursue having a nuclaer weapons capability. That is the only thing that would guarantee peace in the world and end the brutal repression of Palestinians by the evil Zionist regimme and its sponsors. Those who advocate bombing Iran back to the stone age may well get their wish – in reverse !

Look at Israel's boarders. Ask why their are no sanctions. Because the people who trade with Israel don't like it, but trade anyway. America does supply Israel with weapons but it isn't the sole person responsible for the mess. Turkey, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and many more all regularly trade weapons and goods with Israel despite their supposed political claims.

Take a minute and think if these country's might just actually chose to side with Israel over Iran on this issue. Or perhaps think which country would they chose see destroyed Israel or Iran.

If you actually paid attention to the true source of news in the US (CSPAN), then you would know that the US has already deployed 20,000 troops to Qatar, Kuwait, UAE, and Oman upon their request. Why in gods name would these nations ask the US for Patriot Missie Regiments?

Also fallow the paper trail in the country's that are supposedly neutral in the conflict. How much hardware are they buying from the US? 70 Billion dollars in heavy weaponry alone from the first quarter of this year.

If you have a choice between two evils, you chose the one that that wont screw you over down the road. Also Iran turned down the French/Russian offer so the Brazilians are probably just gonna get spit in the face down the road anyway.

Ghandi said that the truth is the truth, even if you are one against the whole world. It isn't Iran who need to quit but the world bullies who think they represent the world. They should instead be paying attention to the economic meltdown they are facing.

Alejandro. Borders are still fought in many places, from India and Paquistan, China-Tibet-Taiwan, and if you want closer by, Gibraltar(England) and Spain and Ceuta (marocco) and Spain. Why keep picking on Israel? Yes, between 2 evils, people will pick Israel! Why? It does not threat countries, it is democratic, it does not send terrorist to blow people when they go to work, it does not shoot political opponents, it contributes to world medicine, economics, engeneering, art and specially they don't try to convert anyone to judaism.
I obviously pick up Iarael. An infinite number of times...

This is animal farm. Horrible atrocities were committed against the jewish people because of their real or perceived differences and the inability of people to accept each other, to live and let live. The Jewish people have now turned the tables, oppressing, stealing from and killing another group of people. This is ----------–Stop crying like a wolf, Muslims did not kick them out of Philistine, The one who let them in Philistine, Kicked them out for their disobedience to God. So were their ans asters, Biblical history is witness to it. They have no right to claim Philistine as their homeland. What ever happened to them, and thy cry about with the tin cup in their one hand and other on the throat of the weak person, is their own doing. They were warned ahead of time, not to commit transmigration. They violated the covenant of Prophet Ibrahim Peace be upon him and paid the price. They forget about the criminality of Carl Marx who reasoned for the murder of millions of Russians in Gulags and labor camps. He was a Israelite and a Jew and the predecessor of Adlf Hitler, a illegitimate Son of a negligent Jewish father.

A world in which some have nukes and can threaten others isn't sustainable. The truth is, is that the nuclear geenie is out of the bottle. If Arab countries feel threatened by Iran's nukes, then the best response is that they too should develop their own nukes. Peace will only come in the world when every one feel secured and that means all having the capacity to deter a nuclear attack. Iran should not cede one millimetre of its right to defend itself.

Mohammad, have you benn drinking or you are using the mental brain wash you get from whoever is teaching you?
Hitler was a great friend of the Mufti of Jerusalem who agree to the extermination of jewish women and children and elderly and all of them. Muslim did not kick jews of Palestine but they want to do it now (at least some). Who the heck is Prophet Ibrahim? Another one who wants the world to become muslim by the sword?? no thank you! Carl Max did not kill millions! Stalin did. Marx had an economic and social theory, proven wrong, but at no time desires or recommends killing anyone. I would not say the same for Prophet Mohamed and the wonderful recommendations in the Coran (I have no idear who Ibrahim is). And besides, look at the history of those who came after the Prophet Muhamad. Tell us bout those who kept killing each other down the road...
And as of the jewish ascent of Hitler, who told you that? your teacher? For the love of Christ, lighten up

To Carlos who said "Israel does not threaten any country."

No, it has only obliterated the state of Palestine. Israel and its sponsors have done to Palestine precisely what they accuse Iran of wanting to do to Israel. And they have obliterated Palestine precisely because they have nuclear weapons and the Palestinians don't. Hyppocrites is the word that readily comes to mind.
