Medvedev: Brazilian visit could be last chance for Tehran

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's visit to Iran this weekend could be the last opportunity to reach an agreement with Tehran and to avoid U.N. Security Council sanctions, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said Friday.

"Given that my friend President Lula is an optimist, I will also be an optimist, and estimate it [the probability of his successful mission to Tehran] at 30 percent," Medvedev said with a chuckle. He spoke in a televised joint press conference with Lula after Russian-Brazilian talks in Moscow.

"I am very much counting on the mission of the Brazilian president to be successful," he added, switching to a serious tone.

"This could be the last chance before the U.N. Security Council makes the already known decisions," Medvedev said, referring to the U.N. decision on imposing sanctions against Iran.

"Yesterday, we discussed this issue on the phone with the United States president, bearing in mind that we need a consolidated position on this issue. And I said that, in my opinion, it is necessary to give the Brazilian president an opportunity to use the entire set of arguments that the international community has at the moment, to persuade Iran to begin cooperating," Medvedev said.

"If there are no changes [in the Iranian position], if attempts to persuade Iran in favor of relevant forms of cooperation fail, then the international community will be compelled to act according to the approaches that are also being discussed by the sextet. I would not like the situation to develop that way. Nevertheless, I can't exclude it."

The sextet refers to the six nations that have been dealing with the Iran nuclear issue - China, France, Germany, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States.

The Brazilian president, for his part, said: "I am going there realizing that the dialogue that will take place is vital and I will try to use all my power of persuasion in this dialogue," according to the translation on the Kremlin website. "I will try to do my best to arrive at some sort of an agreement. I am flying to Iran convinced that we will find it."

The Brazilian president said that it is his goal to persuade his counterpart, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, to cooperate with the international community.

"With every day bringing the talks in Iran closer, I am becoming a greater optimist," Lula said. "I was an optimist yesterday, and I am much more of an optimist today. And probably I will be an even greater optimist after meeting President Ahmadinejad."

Medvedev noted that currently there are few differences among the sextet of mediators on the Iranian nuclear problem, calling their approach a "consolidated" one.

"The general approaches are invariable, and virtually all countries adhere to them," he said.

"Firstly, Iran's nuclear program must be peaceful. Secondly, it should be controlled by the IAEA [International Atomic Energy Agency]. Thirdly, Iran must cooperate with the international community and the IAEA, and in the fourth place, Iran must observe the rules concerning the non-proliferation of nuclear technologies," Medvedev said.

The Russian and U.S. presidents discussed various bilateral and international issues in a phone call on Thursday that lasted for more than an hour and a half, according to the Kremlin press office. Medvedev and President Barack Obama discussed Iran's nuclear problem in detail, it said.

I do not fear the Mullahs of Iran. It is the Zionists who parade themselves as the light who should be feared because their object is to control the world and have everyone below them. They must be stopped at all cost and I praise Iran's leaders for having the courage to stand up to the Zionist's evil intent.

Iran is de facto the most democratic country in the Middle East. Israel is no democracy because the people who belong to that land have been ethnically cleansed from it.

Mohamad, tell me again about "full free man like a muslim"?? say what?? what about a "full free woman like a muslim" . So the only true ones are the muslims? like the only good ones are the Arians? (where did I hear this???)
Explain to me why muslim MEMORIZE the Coran??? usually Christian and jews UNDERSTAND the Bible. They are allegoric books so they are to be understood. Do you UNDERSTAND the Coran? Or just repeat it like a parrot? are you allowed to critize the Coran? Just asking. There is an audience here and perhaps someone could explain that .

I think we just need to get out of other peoples buisness. Were already in a war (Afganistan) and a country that is hopeless (Iraq). If we invade Iran it will be the downfall of the US.

SR, The anti-semitic idea of jews wanted to conquered the world is irrelevant to what Muslims are doing now to the World. If you don't fear the Mullahs join them. And you will see who wants to conquer the world.
And by the way, tell us how do you think jews will conquer the world so I can tell you how muslim are doing that right now at your door...

SR and Ricky are posting old slogans. We all know their origin. From Nazi theory of Arian supremacy, cause muslim don't claim Jews want to conquer the world.
So these kind of arguments and slogans have also gone from the top ten of musical charts and convince none other than poor minds. It is the last of the arguments when all reason and facts show the opposite...

Iran is ruled by an insane Islamic fundamentalist leader, who is antisemitic and constantly preaches his goal of destroying Israel, and thus committing another holocaust, even though he loves to deny that the holocaust ever happened. To allow a crazy man like Ahmedinajad to gain nuclear weapons, is like allowing Hitler nuclear weapons.

Israel is the only true democracy in the middle east. It had the most moral army in the world, and offer equal rights to its Arab citizens. If on the Arab leaders would be more rational peace could have been achieved long ago.

Let us realize that this visit has got nothing to do with any talks about nuke power. It is nothing but a fasad for further business negotiations between Iran and its alies, a.k.a Russia, China, etc...
What it IS all about however is da Silva being the middle man for Iran to buy some more of Russia's outdated useless weapons and passenger aircrafts in exchange of further support in the UN when needed, and the giveaway of further Iranian teretory in the north, a.k.a the remaining part of the Caspian see that has yet not been given away.
Further, this is about future business deals between Brazil and Iran where oil is exchanged for wheat/sugar or some other basic food product that even Ethiopia (no offence towards that country by the way) can produce, but which Iran can not as they are too BZ providing Hizbolla with free weapons.
So, let it not be a surprise if Iran at the end gives the finger to IAEA, UN, EU, US, NATO, The Sixtett, The G7 + 1 x 2 / 3, and the rest of the "International Community" regarding their gizilionth ultimatum. Further, what also should not come as a surprise, is Ahmadinejad further offering the Islamic Republic's help to the West regarding human rights and economic and environmental know how.

Everyone defy's the UN. The five founding members do it the most cause they are the ones with veto power. The purpose of the UN is to prevent the extermination of the human species. Everything else is a joke. The UN hasn't done anything useful since the Korean War.

Iran is in the spotlight because everyone around it doesn't trust it with nukes, and that is a fair argument despite whatever anyone may say. The U.A.E. has nuclear reactors built by the US, not because they are a lap dog of the US, but because they decided that it would be better if the US had inspectors in their reactors that can testify that they aren't trying to screw anyone over. India has the same thing in six of it's reactors. Hell Pakistan is practicably begging the US for this arrangement but Congress thinks that is the US shouldn't be involved in the Pakistani Nuclear program because they are afraid that more nations will seek it out.

Libya openly gave up on it's nuclear ambitions after the US military phase of the Iraq War went by so smoothly seeing that the former Iraqi government couldn't defeat an opponent a fifth it's size in a defensive war. These governments aren't trying to spread Islam or destroy Israel. They are simply trying to stay in power.

Iran, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Qatar, Libya and the rest are all oligarchs trying to stay in power through populace support. When the populace threatens their rule they either turn to the US or go on a self destructive path towards expanding their resources. In order for Iran to expand its influence in the region puts it at odds with the current regimes. Afghanistan and Iraq are undeniably being influenced at the religious politics if not directly in the insurgent level by Iranian supported organisations. (Examples include Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq, Sadrist Movement, Islamic Dawa Party)

Egypt, Pakistan, and Turkey are pro-western in the argument because they are Military Juntas that put the continued strength of the military before everything else. If Iran were to acquire nuclear capability then their military's might be threated by military in the Middle East. (I wonder how often that is?)

Mohammad, have you benn drinking or you are using the mental brain wash you get from whoever is teaching you?
Hitler was a great friend of the Mufti of Jerusalem who agree to the extermination of jewish women and children and elderly and all of them. Muslim did not kick jews of Palestine but they want to do it now (at least some). Who the heck is Prophet Ibrahim? Another one who wants the world to become muslim by the sword?? no thank you! Carl Max did not kill millions! Stalin did. Marx had an economic and social theory, proven wrong, but at no time desires or recommends killing anyone. I would not say the same for Prophet Mohamed and the wonderful recommendations in the Coran (I have no idear who Ibrahim is). And besides, look at the history of those who came after the Prophet Muhamad. Tell us bout those who kept killing each other down the road...
And as of the jewish ascent of Hitler, who told you that? your teacher? For the love of Christ, lighten up
Posted by: carlos---------–Denying the truth is the hallmark of a turned head(Damned by God). Profit Ibrahim peace be upon him is the one, these racial zebras call their father, and base their claim on his name. If you did not know. you must be a genital (A slave) licking your master Jews shoes like a dog. If you are a Jew, without knowing who your father is, you must be a maggi, A decedent of the Persian trickster. Whole world knows who carl Marx was, and what he stood for. He was a propgater of human slavery and a Israelite and Jewish Dog. He did propagate to murder people to confiscate their property. To give tyrent his medicine ( terror) is the right of the victim and in this case how ever Phlistinans or any Muslim treats them, is their right. No matter what this Persian trickster hides behind, or uses some ones name to justify his criminality.
