Medvedev: Brazilian visit could be last chance for Tehran

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's visit to Iran this weekend could be the last opportunity to reach an agreement with Tehran and to avoid U.N. Security Council sanctions, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said Friday.

"Given that my friend President Lula is an optimist, I will also be an optimist, and estimate it [the probability of his successful mission to Tehran] at 30 percent," Medvedev said with a chuckle. He spoke in a televised joint press conference with Lula after Russian-Brazilian talks in Moscow.

"I am very much counting on the mission of the Brazilian president to be successful," he added, switching to a serious tone.

"This could be the last chance before the U.N. Security Council makes the already known decisions," Medvedev said, referring to the U.N. decision on imposing sanctions against Iran.

"Yesterday, we discussed this issue on the phone with the United States president, bearing in mind that we need a consolidated position on this issue. And I said that, in my opinion, it is necessary to give the Brazilian president an opportunity to use the entire set of arguments that the international community has at the moment, to persuade Iran to begin cooperating," Medvedev said.

"If there are no changes [in the Iranian position], if attempts to persuade Iran in favor of relevant forms of cooperation fail, then the international community will be compelled to act according to the approaches that are also being discussed by the sextet. I would not like the situation to develop that way. Nevertheless, I can't exclude it."

The sextet refers to the six nations that have been dealing with the Iran nuclear issue - China, France, Germany, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States.

The Brazilian president, for his part, said: "I am going there realizing that the dialogue that will take place is vital and I will try to use all my power of persuasion in this dialogue," according to the translation on the Kremlin website. "I will try to do my best to arrive at some sort of an agreement. I am flying to Iran convinced that we will find it."

The Brazilian president said that it is his goal to persuade his counterpart, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, to cooperate with the international community.

"With every day bringing the talks in Iran closer, I am becoming a greater optimist," Lula said. "I was an optimist yesterday, and I am much more of an optimist today. And probably I will be an even greater optimist after meeting President Ahmadinejad."

Medvedev noted that currently there are few differences among the sextet of mediators on the Iranian nuclear problem, calling their approach a "consolidated" one.

"The general approaches are invariable, and virtually all countries adhere to them," he said.

"Firstly, Iran's nuclear program must be peaceful. Secondly, it should be controlled by the IAEA [International Atomic Energy Agency]. Thirdly, Iran must cooperate with the international community and the IAEA, and in the fourth place, Iran must observe the rules concerning the non-proliferation of nuclear technologies," Medvedev said.

The Russian and U.S. presidents discussed various bilateral and international issues in a phone call on Thursday that lasted for more than an hour and a half, according to the Kremlin press office. Medvedev and President Barack Obama discussed Iran's nuclear problem in detail, it said.

Ghandi said that the truth is the truth, even if you are one against the whole world. It isn't Iran who need to quit but the world bullies who think they represent the world. They should instead be paying attention to the economic meltdown they are facing.-------Find some one better to quote, not a south African British implant, crooked to his last bone. According to his grand son, Molester of young European girls in his dens, called Ashrems.

ALL THAT WE NEED IS "GIVE PEACE A CHANCE" John Lennon did a good job singing this song. just think of it, when men invented weapons they stopped respecting each other and started demanding those without weapons to bow before them and do what they wanted. that is how world leader came into the scene and along with them GREED, INDIFFERENCE, HUNGER AND GUESS WHAT? "CAPITALISM" that was their ultimate goal. great aint it? now who cares about their human brothers and sisters providing they have all that capitalism can offer. Wars bring forth more hatred. so, please everybody give peace a chance.

It's all about oil and Israel again! Not that I don't think Iran is a dictartorship and people shouldn1t be ruled by tyrants, but where is US and UN to free all africans, for instance, from the same regimen as Iran? Since there's no oil or allies there, who cares?

Nobody really cares about Palestinians. They are a nation that do not produce, but only consume. Any nation in the Middle East that ever hosted them as refugees dearly regrets it i.e Lebanon.

Well, I am pretty sure that Lula, the Brazil's President will get a great deal with the Iran Govern, no just because this can be the last chance for Iran to try to reach a deal, but because the President Lula is a very smart person and know how to the deal with other Nations without the need to make the same kind of pression that developed countries are used to do over developing countries about several issues, including the nuclear problem. I am pretty sure that Lula will get to reach a big deal with Iran, tha will show to the world that UN need urgently more members as Brazil for example, where they can have a different view on how to make deals on serious issue. UN need new members from developing countries, they must to have a different position on several issues that is going on around the world, as global warming, financial, nuclear etc....

When Amaddinnerjacket proclaims, "Death to the West!" (as he so often does) that to me is a direct threat against me, my kids, my way of life, etc. I've never heard any Israeli say that (their version of terrorism is more financial). But Iran, your posturing and your big mouth are going to land you in a world of hurt. Death to the West indeed. Iran is soon to become the world's largest parking lot.

In reply to comment 118 unfortunate I have to say that Brazil has no pretension
to exchange oil for food at all, since it is self sufficient in the matter of
petroleum, having one of the largest oil reserves in the world even further
explored. Once the mission to pacify Lula is just something that Americans do not
at least know what it means. I'm sorry for bad english

WELL THE UNITED NATIONS,ISREAL AND THE UNITED STATES ARE NOT SHOWING ANY TRUE COMMITMENT TO FIRST OF ALL IDENTIFY THE REAL ISSUES HERE:
1)-Iran feels threatened over her security with isreal
2)-Isreal has all the nuclear weapons she needs to wipe out iran and thats a threat to the
Iranians and other neighboring arab countries in the area.
3)-Isreal continues to show outright opposition to give the palestinians their land(Arab Land)
and thats why iran shows solidarity to the palestinian unfortunately to isreals annoyance
So what do they do?They are now trying to make a bomb that will give them the ability
to stand against isreal in case they get targeted someday.thats coz they do not trust
    the isreali government.
So looking at these points, you do not have to be a college graduate to figure out a solution to the problems here.So for all those people leaving crazy comments on here that don't make sense,i will give them a tip and here it comes:
    1) THE UNITED STATES MUST MAKE ISREAL GIVE BACK PALESTINIAN LAND
HELP IN THE CREATION OF THE PALESTINIAN STATE.THIS WILL EASE TENTIONS BETWEEN ISREAL AND THE ARAB WORLD AND MAKE THE U.S TOO LOOK GOOD.

2)ISREAL MUST ALSO ACCEPT CERTAIN NEW RULES WHEN IT COMES TO NUCLEAR ARMS CONTROL SUCH AS REDUCING HER STOCKS OF NUKES WHICH WILL THEREFORE SHOW HER NEIGHBORS(ARAB STATES) INCLUDING IRAN THAT THIS KIND OF DISARMAMENT SHOWS THAT THEY WANT TO BE IN PEACE WITH THEIR NEIGHBORS.THEREBY BUYING TRUST.

3)THE IRANIANS ON THEIR PART MUST RESPECT AND COMPLY TO ALL INTERNATIONAL SIGNATORIES THEY HAVE SIGNED AND ALLOW INSPECTIONS OF THEIR OWN NUCLEAR FACILITIES IF TRUTHFULLY THEY INTEND TO USE FOR CIVILIAN REASONS TO GENERATE POWER/ENERGY FOR ECONOMIC USE.

SO IF ALL THESE THREE MENTIONED GROUPS HERE(THE UNITED STATES,U.N AND THE IRANIANS HAVE A TRUE COMMITMENT TO PEACE ,THEY SHOULD START ACTING FOLLOWING THESE GUIDELINES....MAY GOD BLESS US ALL
