Whale freed from fishing net has died, official says

A gray whale has died two days after rescuers near Los Angeles, California, cut away fishing net that was wrapped around its tail and a fin, an official with the with National Marine Fishery Service said.

According to CNN affiliate KCAL, the whale was spotted Monday, swimming slowly in the shallow harbor at Dana Point. On Wednesday a disentanglement team from Sea World removed the commercial fishing nets and ropes, and the whale appeared to head out to sea.

Joe Cordaro, a wildlife biologist with the fishery service, says it is the 10th gray whale this season to die during migration.

What we need to is stop all fishing in are seas. Our oceans our for the wildlife not fishing!!Fisherman have no respect for nature i go to florida 3x a year, the way fisherman act is sickening they throw the fish down hard on the piers.they leave garbage + fishing line in the water, for birds, manatees + wildlife to get entangled!!We have wrecked the land.We need to leave the oceans alone!!Buy farm raised fish alone+stop over fishing our oceans + seas for a profit!!At this time in culture we should no better, the human race is gross!!!

What we need to do is outlaw fishing!!I go to florida 3x a year and fisherman are gross??The throw the fish down hard on the piers,THEY LEAVE GARBAGE EVERYWHERE AND LEAVE FISHING LINE EVERYWHERE.The fishing line gets tangled around birds, manetees and wildlife,IT KILLS THEM!!The poor whale ,i feel so bad it died!!Sometimes it is shock from the humans helping??We need to start protecting + respecting wildlife. We as humans are a disguting species, animals were on this plant first and here we come destroying + poluting everthing in our path!!Anyone that goes to any of the places like seaworld and zoos, keep in mind they use pouchers to purchase them from???Teach yor childre to protect nature not destroy it and only buy farm raised fish!!

Anyone who blames Sea World for the Death of this animal is an absolute MORON! Did you read the article 10 Grey Whales have dies this Season, and Sea World was no where near those. We are killing these animals, with Pollution, Habitat degradation and over fishing. Fishing Gear left unattended, Garbage found in the whales stomaches.........do the research before you open you mouth like idiots! Sea World does more to save these animals and their habitats than any of those individuals that are attacking them!!!!!! There will be more, and thankfully Sea World and places like it, will respond as they always do, perhaps in that, we can keep all of these animals from dying!

does anyone know how long this whale was entangled in all this netting? he/she was not able to swim, breathe, or feed as he/ she normally would. everyone (except for some of the
mentally challenged who post stupid responses on this site) knows that whales are thinking, reasoning, sensitive animals. try to imagine the fear and suffering this poor
creature endured before it died don't try to make light of it. it's not funny!!!!

@John – this wasn't a case of natural selection – but interference, once again, by humans who neglected to clean up their fishing nets. The oceans are filled with this kind of debris to the detriment of many forms of sea life.

And when you die, John, nobody will care. You're only a person and it's natural selection.
