Metal rocker Ronnie James Dio has died, wife says

Heavy metal rocker Ronnie James Dio died Sunday morning after a battle with stomach cancer, his wife announced.

"Today my heart is broken, Ronnie passed away at 7:45 a.m. 16th May," Wendy Dio said in a message posted on his official website.

Dio, 67, followed Ozzy Osbourne as Black Sabbath's lead vocalist in 1979.

"Many, many friends and family were able to say their private good-byes before he peacefully passed away," she wrote. "Ronnie knew how much he was loved by all."

Born Ronald James Padavona in 1942, Dio's professional music career began as a high school student in the late 1950s.

His 1960s rock group The Electric Elves evolved into Elf by the early 1970s, when the group played heavy blues rock.

Dio's rock became darker with his band Rainbow, which he left in 1979 to join Black Sabbath.

Black Sabbath released three albums with Dio, including "Heaven and Hell" in 1980, "Mob Rules" in 1981 and "Live Evil" in 1982.

Dio left that band in 1982, but he had a brief reunion with the group a decade later. He formed the group Dio in 1982. The group continued to perform until his illness.

His last public appearance was in April at the Revolver Golden Gods  Awards when he accepted a vocalist of the year award his work on last  year's Heaven and Hell album. Dio appeared frail, but he was able to  speak when accepting his award.

How does it feel to have wasted your time?

Bert – As you're wasting yours? Is it not a sin to judge others? Are you without sin? Did you know the man and/or his family and friends to be able to justify your increasingly mean comments? Ones that are seemingly meant to provoke a reaction? Or, are you just a small little man, with a small little – – – – who has to run others down to satisfy yourself...?

  7. Dio Who?

Not sure what DIO delivered to this world. I saw a couple of his interviews where PENIS size seemed to be his focus. To quote, "Let's see what you got?" Breat guy... NOT. Sounds like a jerk. Must have swallowed too much of his own demonic acid and died. His music sucked and he ruined Richie BUTTMORE's Rainbow. It was NOT "his band." Rest in hell Dio. You earned it. That's my opinion.

Bert, I never said the man made the world a better place. I simply pointed out that your lack of respect for the recently deceased and the feelings of his family are repugnant and are a clear demonstration that you are an idiot. Why not leave the posting here to the fans who wish to share thoughts and convey condolences to the Dio family. Have a nice evening.

Very sad day. I interviewed Ronnie back in the 80s just before seeing him perform at the Providence Civic Center. We spent the afternoon together. He was such a gentleman. And the persona he created with his music was just one side of this incredibly nice man. He will be missed. RIP Ronnie!

Godfather of Metal- Sorry to hear of his passing. Perhaps CNN can give the Bret Michaels crap a rest for a while and talk about this real musician who was a total class act and didn't have to exaggerate an illness to get some free publicity for a once respect news outlet.
