Metal rocker Ronnie James Dio has died, wife says

Heavy metal rocker Ronnie James Dio died Sunday morning after a battle with stomach cancer, his wife announced.

"Today my heart is broken, Ronnie passed away at 7:45 a.m. 16th May," Wendy Dio said in a message posted on his official website.

Dio, 67, followed Ozzy Osbourne as Black Sabbath's lead vocalist in 1979.

"Many, many friends and family were able to say their private good-byes before he peacefully passed away," she wrote. "Ronnie knew how much he was loved by all."

Born Ronald James Padavona in 1942, Dio's professional music career began as a high school student in the late 1950s.

His 1960s rock group The Electric Elves evolved into Elf by the early 1970s, when the group played heavy blues rock.

Dio's rock became darker with his band Rainbow, which he left in 1979 to join Black Sabbath.

Black Sabbath released three albums with Dio, including "Heaven and Hell" in 1980, "Mob Rules" in 1981 and "Live Evil" in 1982.

Dio left that band in 1982, but he had a brief reunion with the group a decade later. He formed the group Dio in 1982. The group continued to perform until his illness.

His last public appearance was in April at the Revolver Golden Gods  Awards when he accepted a vocalist of the year award his work on last  year's Heaven and Hell album. Dio appeared frail, but he was able to  speak when accepting his award.

Very sad to hear this news. A true talent, never seemed to suffer from "rock-star syndrome". So glad I caught H & H several times over the last couple of years. He will be missed by many. Rock in peace, Ronnie.

Dio-I was nine when I first started jamming your music. Thank you for thirty plus years of great times and fantastic music. You will be missed.

      srdj,

I jammed his music in the trash. That's about all it was good for.

He had a dignity and humility about him that most rockers could learn a lot from. And charitable instincts to boot.

I saw him January 4, 1986, the day Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy died. He graciously mentioned Lynott's passing during the show, then again later when a small fire started in the wiring above the stage. "Phil's sending us a message." I'm sure tonight his performing peers are tipping their hats in a similar manner for this true gentleman.

    Metal Madness,

It's mainly because of jerks like Bert or Ernie that don't know who RJD was and are trying to fit in with stupid statements like "you can't rock after you die". But it's really pointless trying to argue with them since they have the mental development of an 8 year old

They're trolls. They literally have nothing better to do than sitting in front of their computers all day trying to upset people. It's the only way they can get their kicks in their useless lives. Just ignore them.

actually we're muppets, moron. A troll is something you were born from. Metal sucks.

Muppet? I don't think so, LOL. They're much more entertaining than you, I assure you.

troll: One who posts a deliberately provocative message to a newsgroup or message board with the intention of causing maximum disruption and argument......(sound familiar? it's what you do for a living since you probably live in mommy's basement with no life and no job 🙂 )

And metal sucks? LOL. Coming from someone whose favorite band is probably Nickelback. Oh the irony.

RIP Ronnie James Dio..."Between the velvet lies. There's a truth that's hard as steel. The vision never dies. Life's a never ending wheel." Ascend to your mighty rock throne in the sky. Holy Diver, you will be missed.

Between the velvet flies? The vision does die ... at death it all dies. Life does end.. no wheel about it. Descend into the pits of hades. There is nothing "holy" about you. If you were truly great.. you would've avoided death.

So acording to you there has never been anyone that could be called "great"? It that it? 'Cause i really can't remember the last one who avoided death

You can't see a rainbow when it's dark you dork. I'm sure Ronnie is helpless at this point. Maybe he should've chosen a bit differently. He's probably not doing a lot of kicking of anything. Try and get your facts straight.
