Judge rules Obama's aunt can stay in U.S.
President Barack Obama's Kenyan aunt can stay in the United States, a U.S. immigration judge has ruled, ending a more than six-year legal battle over her status.
Judge Leonard Shapiro made the decision Friday, court officials told CNN. Two government sources confirmed Monday that the ruling will give legal status to Zeituni Onyango, allowing her to remain in the country.
Onyango's attorneys plan to hold a press conference at 2 p.m. in Ohio.
Onyango, who is the half-sister of the president's late father, applied for political asylum in 2002 due to violence in her native Kenya. She was a legal resident of the United States at the time and had received a Social Security card a year earlier.
Onyango's asylum request was turned down in 2004, and she has been living in the United States illegally since then. She appealed the rejection of her request twice, but was denied each time and ordered to leave the country.
Judge Shapiro gave Onyango permission to remain in the United States in April 2009 while he considered her case.
In February, Onyango arrived at an immigration court in a wheelchair and testified before the judge for more than two hours, her representative, Amy Cohn, told CNN at the time. Two doctors, including her personal physician, also testified on her behalf. Onyango's medical condition was part of her legal defense against expulsion.
White House officials said during the appeals that Obama was staying out of the matter.
"The president believes that the case should run its ordinary course," the officials said.
Onyango's immigration status came to light in the final days of the 2008 presidential race.

IT took 3 to 4 years to bring my wife in legally ,with all the bs paper work you need ,its like the dmv on steroids . why is it that she thinks she can skip the whole process, if so why aint it available to all. why because the pres made a call to smooth out all the rough edges ,its be going on forever . everbody knows everbody in the political arena wheather good or bad ,favors always get performed and will always be this way,its just the way its done.

OMG I couldn't believe what I was reading. About President Obama's aunt being allowed to stay in this country after she had been her ilegaly. Lets assume that the judge didn't know she was Obama's aunt when he made his decision. My opinion is why this is happening. My husband came here from Lebanon when he was nine years old. His father came here two (2) years before him and his mother and siblings two years later.. He had to have a sponsor to come here. That is someone who will sponsor you help you get a place to live and get a job. My father in law got a job and saved every penny and then bought a home for his wife and children. He worked here in the US for two years. Got his home and a used car and then saved more money to bring the kids and wife here to the US.The system worked well in my opinion. My father in law brought the wife and kids here in 1954.He worked until his death in 1964 when he was killed when a crane fell on him and crushed him to death. He died trying to save his co-worker who was in the way of the crane. He had eight children. My mother in law was not given welfare or assistence. Her two oldest sons helped her and an uncle helped her. The oldest son was given a honorable discharge form the Army. My husband choose to enlist in the USMC he was accepted (the government) checked with all the neighbors to make sure he was not a communist. When he was acepted in the military he was promised he would be given his citzenship. He served 6 years in the USMC and was not given his citzenship and had to go down and fill out the papers and apply. My point is I think this is the way all people should apply for citzenship and not be allowed assistence from the govertnment or medical assistence. We need to go back to the old way of immigration processing.

This country owes her nothing if she is an illegal immigrant. There are laws governing who and how many immigrants can reside here. If she won't obey our laws, she deserves nothing.
Many people are here iollegally and many even work and are taken advantager of, but this person should be deported , no questions asked.
