Family of Michigan girl killed in police raid files lawsuits

An attorney representing the family of a 7-year-old Detroit, Michigan, girl killed in a police raid filed lawsuits in state and federal courts Tuesday, accusing the police of a cover-up.

"This type of activity by a police force is unacceptable in America," said Michigan attorney Geoffrey Fieger at a news conference in his office. "What is equally unacceptable is the cover-up that has occurred."

Fieger said the lawsuits allege gross negligence, a violation of civil rights and a conspiracy to cover up the violation of civil rights.

Aiyana Jones died early Sunday after she was hit by gunfire during a police raid at her home.

Detroit Assistant Police Chief Ralph Godbee has said that police were executing a search warrant for a suspect in a shooting two days earlier that killed a high school student.

He said preliminary information indicated that members of the Detroit Police Special Response Team approached the house and announced themselves as police.

If the cops are guilty, I wonder if they will be named in the suit as well as the Department/County/State etc..

You can't house a (suspected) murderer in your home, where you also have a 7 yr old, and then sue when something goes wrong. Throw this case out and stop wasting my tax dollars dragging it out in the justice system.

And I seriously doubt that the police just ran in the house and started shooting the place up for no reason, even if there was a murderer inside.

Did they even have a funeral yet? The poor kids body is barely cold and yet all the family wants to do is sue for MONEY. I think the whole thing is disgusting from the family harboring a fugitive to the poor child getting shot.

Man, you're dense and hateful. The suspect WAS NOT – again for the slow – WAS NOT in this familie's apartment. He was upstairs in a different unit. They were not harboring a fugitive. Their apparent crime was to unknowingly live downstairs from a criminal. Learn the facts before showing your hate and ignorance.

OKay people, you need to read before posting. THERE ARE TWO APARTMENTS. TWO. The police busted into BOTH at the same time, only having ONE warrant. The family and the suspect were in seperate apartments. So stop blaming them you stupid morons.

Everyone blaming the family for this death needs to examine the case more closely. The police raided multiple units in the same house, and the suspect they were looking for was found in a different unit then the one where this girl was shot. News reports from Detroit are confirming that the family of the girl who was shot were unrelated in any way to the suspect. Further, police sources are now saying that the suspect was "in the building", as opposed to saying he was in this particular unit. The house in question had 2 apartments, both raided by the police. The suspect was not found in the apartment with the dead girl.

To avoid the obvious backlash that is forthcoming, the police are only saying that the suspect was found in the building. They are so far refusing to confirm that the suspect was in fact not found in this girl's apartment, but upstairs instead. They did not deny that claim when pressed by the media, saying only that the investigation is ongoing. I hope to see many of you on here apologizing for blaming this poor girl's family when it is confirmed that this family had nothing to do with the suspect in question – as is slowly becoming clear. It's sad how lowly some of you value the life of a child.

The police may have announced themselfves as police but THE KID WAS 7 YEARS OLD. Children don't know that they have to get down or get out of the way. You don't start shooting when you enter a house, you're on your guards.
Usually they have information of people that's in the house. They should've seen there was a child in the residence.
The first thing raders do is they screen the perimiter. A 7 year old kid ain't the same size of an adult. The police shoudn't get away with this. It could've been they're kids or grand kids.

I will 100% gurantee everyone that posted condemning the police for the actions they took.. owns a gun and has been in trouble with the law before. Its sad that people think it is 100% normal to have been arrested, have house raided or charges laid and truely believe it is not their fault. It is not fair that people bring children into this world and then continue to be involved in criminal activity, they obviously do not care for human life. That is saddening.. this 7 year old did not deserve this but her parents 100% created this.

IT WAS THE WRONG APARTMENT. HOW ARE the parents AT FAULT!!!!, If the police kicked in your door and shot your kid how would you feel. STOP Dehumanizing people. BY your account all crackheads and children of crack heads should be allowed to be abused and murdered.... THATS NOT AMMERICAN.. and besides where does it say the parents were crack heads , they look pretty healthy to me.

Announcing yourself is one thing.... breaking down the door while hollering "Police" which is probably drowned out by the sound of the door breaking and the noise and commotion is another. A man who shot and killed one police officer and wounded another was found not guilty in a case in Canada.

I think it is a sad reflection of America at how many people assume all sorts of bad things on a family because their home was raided by Police. Try to remember that you live in a country where you are innocent until proven guilty, and the police don't have a great track record when it comes to raids. One day the cops might show up at your door; how would you like them to behave?

Too bad this little 7-year old black girl wasn't a cute little puppy, or a cute little white girl, so maybe we could get past some of the white trash comments on here and see this as the price for increasing militarization of the police. If you think this is an appropriate procedure for police to follow, I hope they come for you next.

We live in a society where DANGERous people can live next door to you...They are CRIMINALS with children or They bring criminals into their homes for WHATEVER reason.....Unfortunately a child was killed IN this home...I feel bad for those grieving.
It is a job of parents to take care of their children the best way they can...Certainly with food, cleanliness, shelter, manners and protection. No Excuses!!!!

Where did you read they are criminals? Oh you didn't read, you just came here and posted some bull comment. For the last time you idiot: There are TWO apartments. It's a DUPLEX, okay??? The suspect (Criminal as you put it) was in the upstairs apartment. The family was in the lower complex. So shuttup. Just shuttup and go back to scarfing junk food down your fat gullet.
