Official: Bagram attackers wore U.S.-style uniforms

Insurgents who attacked Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan on Wednesday were wearing U.S. Army-style battle fatigue uniforms, according to a U.S. military official who has seen initial eyewitness accounts of the attack.

A second U.S. military official confirmed the initial accounts but said he did not know if all of the attackers were wearing U.S.-style uniforms.

The officials did not want to be identified because of the ongoing investigation.

Neither official could say whether the uniforms were stolen, or how the insurgents came into possession of them. U.S. military-style items are available on the internet for purchase.

Attackers had AK-47 rifles, rocket-propelled grenades and "typical Middle Eastern load-carrying equipment" such as ammunition belts and other military accessories, according to the first official.

The official said attackers approached the base at three points and began by firing rockets at the northeastern sector of the base. The ground attack came from the west. Attackers were on foot and also fired from at least one vehicle. Four were wearing suicide vests, according to the U.S. military, although none were able to detonate the explosives.

U.S. troops killed 16 attackers using air and ground fire.

The attack began at 3 a.m. local time with two rockets fired, with the bulk of the small-arms fighting occurring between 4 a.m. and 4:30 a.m. A mortar damaged the base's laundry facility and slightly damaged the hospital. Sporadic small arms fire continued for three to four hours.

U.S. troops pursued insurgents outside the base. During the pursuit, one soldier stepped on an old Russian mine and had to be rescued.

Please check your facts...the USA did support the local Afghan fighters in the war with the USSR but there was NO Taliban at that time. The Taliban came into power in the 90's made up of the mujahideen fighters and took control over the country because there was no government, just local tribal warlords fighting for power. The Taliban became the largest and most powerful and took control of Kabul. There was never really a government in Afghanistan for a long time, that's why the USSR thought it would be easy to invade and conquer. The US did supply weapons and training to the mujahideen, which also didn't exist until the USSR invaded, so in that respect yes we did support them but please really understand and know what you're talking about when you post here.

Y'all forget that the Taliban sided with BinLaden in his bid to rid the "Holy Land" of Christian influence primarily when the US troops where stationed in Saudi Arabia during the 1st Gulf War. He was against foreign troops, most especially women soldiers, "occupying his country. The Taliban received a boost when Bin Laden was identified as a Taliban. I think the west under-estimated the Taliban and should have gotten rid of them earlier. How can such a primitive army have the NATO forces at bay when all they have are AK's and IED's?

Ignorant reporters are getting on my nerves. Why the hell would they write:
"Neither official could say whether the uniforms were stolen, or how the insurgents came into possession of them. U.S. military-style items are available on the internet for purchase."
That information was NOT necessary to the story, yet they just let that many more people know how to get an upper hand on the US military.
CNN, that it off your website before you get more people killed.

please shut up about how the "troops" are preserving our freedom. there not. there is no freedom in the u.s.s.a, thanks to the former resident of the white house. by "US"(not me) being there it is making this country prone to attack(not that people are attacking us anyway)it is a ploy to herd up the sheep that most of the dumb americans are. i used to be proud of this country. now im just embarrassed because of how stupid, uninformed, oblivious, and gullible the people of this once great country have become.

listen here, sean, If you arn't gonna stand behind out troops, then why don't you stand infront of them, since you think you know whats best for this country. I honestly wish that everyone who is so negative about our troops could spend one week in their shoes while in the middle of a combat zone. just as samantha said, If you don't like the USA, then get the hell out, cause we don't want ya here!
