Deadly battle between Somali insurgents, government

At least 10 people were killed Sunday when Somali government forces battled with Islamist militants around a Mogadishu market that was the scene of a similar clash last week.

The latest fighting started near the Bakara market about 6:30 a.m. local time. In addition to the fatalities, 30 people were wounded, said Ali Muse, director of Nationlink Ambulance.

Somali forces have been battling Al-Shabaab, the al Qaeda proxy in the country. The militants are waging a war against the government in an effort to implement a stricter form of Islamic law, or sharia.

On May 16, the two sides fought in the same area, leading to 20 deaths and 60 injuries, medics said.

Most of those killed were civilians, Muse said.

The horn of Africa nation has not had a stable government since 1991, and fighting between the rebels and government troops has escalated the humanitarian crisis in the famine-ravaged country. The United Nations-backed interim government fights the rebels with the help of African Union peacekeepers.
