Poland flooding causes deaths, official says

At least 12 people died and thousands were affected when heavy rains caused three Polish rivers to flood, according to a Polish Defense Ministry spokesman.

The rains over the past week caused the Vistula, Odra and Warta rivers to flood, affecting some 20,000 people, according to the spokesman, Wieslaw Grzegorzewski.

Nine helicopters, more than 3,800 soldiers and 35 special boats were being used to help flooding victims, he said, and the ministry was doing its best to prevent further flooding damage.

Why isn't there more coverage of this story. Three or four large cities in Poland (Krakow, Katowice, Wroclaw and Warsaw) have had problems with flooding and LOTS of villages and smaller cities and towns – beginning May 17. Thousands of people have been affected: loss of life, homes, businesses, evacuations, etc. and this is the first article I've seen from CNN. The flooding has been widespread and more significant than Katrina hitting New Orleans.

If, as reported, only 12 people have died, then it is not even close to the impact of Katrina. That said, of course there should be coverage, and I hope there will be.

I dont think everyone here realizes the obvious – our generation (sadly my peers) are more interested in celebrity foolishness and the hottest gears vs the news. CNN as well as other media report what consumers want to hear and the story that gets the most attention (aka highest ratings). Sadly, today's "reality" tv is not news or tragedies around the world – its shows that are based on unsignificant matters. Therefore if you look at the overall News – you will notice that it does not matter where you are from – what tragedy hapenned – Celebrity news is always Exclusive. Sad world we live in to be honest. Since we are all looking at this story Im guessing we are all affected and have familywho is dealing with this unfortunate event.

Finally, something on CNN about the Polish floods! Yes, indeed, as Karolina writes, why hasn't there been more (and much earlier) coverage on CNN and other international media about these floods? This has been a huge story here in Poland for the past week. Large parts of the country are under water. Tens of thousands have been affected. Maybe you can try to put together a more comprehensive article, with a photo or two, so people outside Poland learn more about this. I bet if these floods had been in Germany or France or England or, of course, the US, CNN would have given a lot more coverage.

Finally, right? Thank you CNN about writing about this, like I asked you to do it. I hope that it would be more news about it here.

Sadly, ND, you are correct. Poland seems to be thought of as part of the Third World by many.

Well, I really don't have a strong opinion on why coverage of the flood has been so low. But I guess it depends on death toll. Earlier this month, there was a huge flood in Nashville, TN, and CNN gave it really low coverage. To me, it's too hard to tell.

how is this not making international news? Having been only covered in a blog is rather pathetic seeing as how this is a large agenda item for the EU. I guess a 13 year old climbing mount everest is more important than thousands of people displaced and quite a few dead or missing.

From what I know, during the era of Communists in Eastern Europe, they did cut down forests and turned swampland into agricultural fieds. As a result, there is in some areas little to "absorb" the rain.

Most of us know where Nashville is. Many don't know where Poland is and even fewer know where it was 75 years ago. We shouldn't wait for disasters to broaden our knowledge.

When thousands of Muslims die, it is the great Satan's evil. When 12 Poles die, it is God's punishment. Time to begin re-evaluating things.

There is no way that this post is from an actual Muslim. A true Muslim does not seek Allah to condemn but understands an eternal and unconditional love as described in so many other religions. Furthermore, all you jerks who replied defending "white" people... you are so disappointing. Is religion or religious preference based on skin color? Please learn about a religion before you condemn it. Islam is more similar to Christianity than you realize. It is only the extremists that give it a bad name. That is true for any religion.

Sorry AHMED, not a believable rant... maybe if you typed this using moor than your two index fingers. Better luck next time.
Focus on the real subject, CNN can't sell I-pods and Droid phones if they report downer (real) stories about flooding in Poland, so they talk about Lindsey and her druggie friends to keep their stocks up and advertising pocket-pool budies happy. Pay it forward folks and lend a helping hand... without having to be asked.

impression you are not interested in it.The flood should hit headlines.12 people have been killed.Poland is fighting with water and people are important to know we have support from all over the World.I demand more information, photos and comments.

you use such words as disheartening about media coverage, and yet you are so quick to judge other religions. maybe ahmed's comment was uncalled for, but still there is no reason why you should imply that all muslims do this or that. if you seek respect and humility maybe you should show some yourself.

Can you cut your racist bs crap? Until the investigation of this accident hasn't been completed you shouldn't say anything.
Probably Polish as well as Hungarians have had enough of people coming to our country, not abiding the law and crying out racist when something happens. You don't like our way of living, our values just simply go back to your country and cry racist there. Funny thing is that lately I only hear white people being racist never black.... which is a big bs..

This is all part of the global warming/climate change scenario-Al Gore, had the right idea, just not the right outcome. He listened to too many opionions. This is what will happen and continue to happen-wild swings in weather-there is also record rains and flooding in North/South Dakota in the US. It will get even worse when the BP oil gets into the gulf current (which it has) and then gets transferred to the artic via the Atlantic conveyor. The result will be massive weather swings until we finally have to change our ways of living and our econimic policies which are totally out of step for the 21st century. Unrestained growth with unregulated capitalism let BP and other corporate conglomerates operate outside the rules of law and with unanticipated and unimagined consequences for mostly the poor and middle class while the ruling class sits in their air-conditioned homes on high ground getting richer.
