Mounting tensions on the Korean Peninsula reached a new level Tuesday as a North Korean agency announced that the communist nation is severing all ties with its neighbor to the south and will "abrogate the agreement on non-aggression."
A spokesman for North Korea's Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of Korea accused South Korean President Lee Myung-bak of falsely blaming Pyongyang for the sinking in March of the South Korean warship Cheonan, according to the state-run Korean Central News Agency.
An official South Korean report said the North fired a torpedo at the warship, killing 46 sailors. Since then relations between the Koreas has turned increasingly frosty.
Lee has already announced that South Korea was suspending trade with North Korea, closing its waters to the North's ships and adopting a newly aggressive military posture toward its neighbor.
While in China on Monday, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the United States supports the finding on the Cheonan's sinking.
She urged North Korea on Monday to reveal what it knows about the "act of aggression." She also said the United States' "support for South Korea's defense is unequivocal" and that North Korea should "stop its belligerence and threatening behavior."
U.S. President Barack Obama has directed military commanders to work with South Korean troops "to ensure readiness and to deter future aggression" from North Korea.
While the considerable diplomatic skills of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton appears to have settled down South Korea's response to North Korea allegedly firing a torpedo at a South Korean warship, sinking it and killing several sailors, South Korea has moved to a psychological war response.
Despite repeated North Korean warnings, South Korea has begun broadcasting defection propaganda thru speakers, radio stations and bill boards mounted on the massive border crossing.
North Korea has specifically stated they would fire their artillery at any border crossings that have speakers blasting defection propaganda from. Obviously with the sudden drop in the North Korean currency and the Asian Stock Markets, this is seen as a serious development.
It is entirely likely North Korea will indeed fire their artillery on border crossings that have active speakers promoting North Korean civilians to defect to South Korea. China is urging patience, however thanks to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, South Korea has time on her side.
Will North Korea blink, or open up with her artillery at the billboards and speakers on the border crossings promoting defection to South Korea? Much of the Millions of civilians residing in Seoul, South Korea are within range of North Korean artillery batteries. If North Korea open's up with selected artillery barrages, this razor edge stalemate could almost immediately escalate. I wonder why China is sounding confident that peace will continue?
Because China's the one FEEDING North Korea. Do what we say or get ready for Super Diet. North Korea might start something but it'll be China that ends it if they do.
Only a war will stop North Korea for good. Bring it on Kim...
I wonder what China's doing behind the scenes. I mean, they own the peninsula, and can't be feeling great about hundreds of thousands of Korean refugees pouring into China.
I think China is confident because they know their dog (NK) is leashed. If they fire that artillery across the border, I have a feeling South Korea would unleash its own fighting force and whip their decrepit asses. Nobody's scared of NK's military–it's just that no country wants to deal with the massive refugee problem that would be created.
"so ronery, I'm so ronery"
These guys are wacky. South Korea is their second largest trade partner. idiots. Outside of China, don't they get most of their aid from the South and us? Once again, shooting themselves in the foot, while it's in their mouth.
Can anyone give me a reason why? Why the outspoken leader of North Korea would deny firing a missile at a South Korean boat?
Because HE didnt fire it silly! His military did. Were looking for SPECIFIC details here before we point the finger
Kim Jong IL is a disgrace to Communism. He has me rolling in my grave.
I am commanding China in cooperation with South Korea and the U.S. to attack North Korea mercilessly.

I think that north korea isbad. Why they shoot south korea? They didn't do anything.
yeah
This situation is NOT specific to the Korean peninsula. It is in fact another deadly symptom of Communism which claims to be for the people but instead benefits only the top leaders and those who agree to twist truths and policies for personal gain.
Yet, the Western nations are sliding down a slippery path of ignoring this reality and continue to do business with them in the same manner as they do Democratic countries. This was not the case with USSR where Reagan and others held harder line and ultimately triumphed with the fall of the Berlin wall and the freeing of millions in Eastern Europe.
