Man gets 25 years for stabbing death of immigrant

A Long Island man, Jeffrey Conroy, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for his role in the stabbing death of an immigrant from Ecuador.

Conroy was convicted in April of manslaughter as a hate crime in the death of an immigrant from Ecuador.

He was accused of having a hand in the death of Marcelo Lucero, a 37-year-old native of Ecuador who was fatally stabbed in the chest on November 8, 2008, in Patchogue, New York.

It should have been a life sentence. Murder is murder.

Convicted of manslaughter – not murder. He did kill Lucero but apparently it was not premeditated.
That means he did not plan to do it. 25 yrs is not that light of a sentence believe it or not... some criminals
that have killed get a lot less.

It's so refreshing to see racial comments coming from non-whites to fuel the racial hatred that
continues to plague our society. I mean what would be the fun if both sides didn't continued to spread
hate? What would people do when they read the news if they no longer would hate someone?

I agree Angie. He should definitely have been charged and convicted of murder and received a life sentence.
How can someone only get manslaughter for stabbing someone to death with a weapon?! It would be different if he only hit the person and the person fell and hit his head and died from the fall. That could be considered manslaughter. But stabbing a person with a knife?! Obviously, even if you only stab a person with a knife once, a very possible outcome is that you will kill that person.

Guest: He should have been convicted of second degree murder which does not require premeditation. Only first degree murder requires premeditation.

Although I don't know the specifics of this case, 25 years seems rather light – considering it was prosecuted as a hate crime ...

They always have to bring up the Hate crime he gets the sentence he deserves. But if it were an illegal immigrant that killed someone of another race. Funny how that would not be a hate crime.

If you take a life, you should not be allowed to live. Whether it was premeditated or in the moment.

Conroy was accused of stabbing the victim in the chest with a knife. He lied about it and tried to pin the blame on someone else. The jury saw through it and after the trial said that they didn't believe a word he said. If the victim was not an immigrant from Ecuador, Conroy is probably convicted of murder. Instead, he is convicted of manslaughter because the jury finds he did not intend to kill the victim. However, in NY, there is a form of murder for reckless indifference to human life. I thought this fit the definition – plunging a knife into someone's chest the entire length of the blade. The jury also found it was a hate crime – which seems a no-brainer since he used terms to describe rolling people that were ethnically derogatory, assaulted other Latinos and even has a swastika tattoo. A former prosecutor thinks the sentence of 25 years means he will likely serve 18 years.

A life sentence typically means the person can serve 7-14 years. 25 is more than a life sentence. Life without parole means 'life' in prison.
