Airspace violated over Obama's Chicago home

The North American Air Defense Command scrambled a pair of F-16 fighter jets Sunday afternoon over Chicago when a Cessna 150 aircraft violated a temporary restricted flight zone near the residence of President Obama.

The aircraft was intercepted and instructed to land at Lewis University Airport in Romeoville, Illinois, where it was met by local authorities, Maj. Mike Humphrey of NORAD said.  No other details were immediately available.

Romeoville is located about 25 miles southwest of downtown Chicago. The temporary restricted flight area is a standard procedure whenever the president is in an area.  The first family is in Chicago for the Memorial Day
weekend. The Obamas are scheduled to return to Washington on Monday evening.

    • How Does Hate Help

Because we are a nation of lost and debased people who are fixated on hating. It's apparently what Americans do best. That's what I've been observing on these comments on articles... CNN, it doesn't matter where, the majority of the comments left on line following news articles are disgusting, foul and should embarass us, but there is no shame, no self-reflection or accountability. It is as if everyone has forgotten how peaceful and loving toddlers are and they've forgotten that that is how they started out as well. Why are so many people okay with being and expressing such a low form of human communication. Animals behave more respectfully toward one another. We are the ones created in some Divine image? Not from what I'm seeing.

U.S. citizens can't do what ever they want in other countries so why should immigrants from Mexico or anywhere else for that matter do what they please in the U.S.? It's bullcrap. If we protested in Mexico, we'd get locked up after we get beat up.

Yep. In Central America they randomly stop people and check their IDs to make sure they are not in the country illegally, but here those very people call it racism when it's done here (and NOT randomly, to be sure. You have to break the law first). It's a joke. They know we have given ourselves over to political correctness and they are using it against us.

If it’s to LEFT, then it must be a story about praising Calderon and giving him a standing ovation for ridiculing America.

President Obama is doing what many other Republican Presidents have done in the past. He designated VP Biden to do the ceremony for him and he attended one in Chicago. Further, the POTUS does not and should not be in La. pressuring BP Oil. He is the president and has much more work to do so when he returns after the holiday he will do his job. Of course I am not so stupid as to realize that if this man stopped the oil flow, cleaned up the beaches, ended the 2 wars we are in along with North Korea, turned the economy around in 24 hours, there are those among you that would claim he took to long. There is one thing I like to say about people like that. They are freakin idiots. Nothing this President does is going to satisfy them.

Not newsworthy... no mention of whether it was an intentional violation or not. Its not like there's big yellow lines in the sky to cross. And, a GPS is useless unless you know the TFR is in effect. People violate TFRs all the time for stupid reasons.

Well..actually..the big yellow lines are on maps, and flight does require knowing where you are in relation to ground reference points..and not having any business within a few MILES of a TFR (or other airspace you dont belong in without an OK) its actually hard for someone that has the ability to look out a window, to NOT know where they are on a map, no GPS required.

I respect that D made a mistake, and can man up to it..but..really, airspace rules are verrrry important and irregardless of how one views our current airspace system, its -not hard- to work within it with ease. Its not the FAA's fault someone finds themselves in the wrong place.

Dont expect average American driving habits out of pilots..unless you live under a bomb proof shelter,,cuz that'd be the reality if pilots flew like most people drive their cars.

Amazing.. I haven't posted in soo long yet I see the same crap from people who ( obviously ) voted for Palin & McCain blame everything thats been wrong with our country for years on President Obama. Can any of you explain why?

Because it's easy to blame people you don't support. Polarization of politics. There's too much black/white right/wrong BS going on, politics should have far more shades of gray.

ElisabethinCA – You said it best – that is exactly the problem. Question: what do we do to fix it? Because this world sure needs it.

    KEN IN NC,
I couldn't have said it better myself. You know i'm one of those people who hate when people don't take responsibility for anything and use the gender or race card, but what else are we to think when people are so disrespectful to OUR president? Who by the way have only been President for 1 year. ( A little racist maybe? ) Just Sayin'

Its not about respect, its about following the FAA rules. Each time Obama is in town, the FAA notifies all pilots of the airspace restrictions. Failure to not check the NOTAMS, TFR's, and for disregard of restricted airspace should amount to a huge fine or license suspension.

How would the pilot know he's doing that? Is the restricted zone on a flight map somewhere? Otherwise it'd be easy to fly near the Pres' house.

He would know because before you take off, you are supposed to check a few things. Weather for example to determine if you can fly safely VFR, and any posted FAA notices such as TFR's. You do not just jump in your airplane and take off.
