Interpol: Joran van der Sloot arrested in Santiago

Joran van der Sloot is being investigated in connection with the death of Stephany Flores Ramirez, right, and was a suspect in the disappearance of Natalee Holloway.

[Updated at 1:13 p.m.] Joran van der Sloot has been arrested and is in police custody in Santiago, Chile, an Interpol spokesperson in Santiago told CNN.

Van der Sloot, who was previously considered a suspect in the 2005 disappearance of Alabama teenager Natalee Holloway in Aruba, is the main suspect in this week's slaying of 21-year-old Stephany Flores Ramirez, officials said. She was was found Wednesday in a Lima, Peru, hotel room registered to van der Sloot. Chilean police told CNN that paperwork showed that van der Sloot entered Chile on Wednesday.

Peruvian Interior Minister Octavio Salazar Miranda said Thursday that Peru has made arrangements with Interpol to extradite van der Sloot.

[Updated at 12:33 p.m.] Chilean investigators have told CNN Chile that Joran van der Sloot was spotted in Arica, Chile, near the Peruvian border and they believe he may still be there.

[Posted at 11:59 a.m.] Peruvian authorities investigating a young woman's slaying this week are working with officials from Interpol, Chile, Argentina and Colombia in the search for Joran van der Sloot, a Dutch man previously considered a suspect in the 2005 disappearance of Alabama teenager Natalee Holloway, the Peruvian justice minister said Thursday.

There is "incriminating evidence" linking van der Sloot to the killing of 21-year-old Stephany Flores Ramirez, who was found with multiple stab wounds in a Lima hotel room Wednesday, Cesar Guardia Vasquez, of Chile Interpol's criminal investigations unit, said at a news conference.

The hotel room where Flores was found was registered in van der Sloot's name, he said.

A hotel guest and an employee witnessed the pair entering the hotel room together at 5 a.m. on Sunday, Guardia said.

Police have video of the previous night, May 29, of van der Sloot and Flores together at the Atlantic City Casino in Lima, he said.

According to immigration officials, van der Sloot fled to Chile over land on Monday, Guardia said.

"We have all the evidence to show that the killer is this man," the victim's father, businessman and race-car driver Ricardo Flores told CNN en Español.

I don't think a trial was actually held in Aruba. So they should be able to hold trial there. Hope not he needs a prison like the ones hes going to in Peru.

Although he was arrested twice, he was never formally charged in the Holloway case...nor were the other two young men who were implicated with him. Hence, the case never went to trial in Aruba.

You need serious help... Can you even begin to imagine how much this has cost the family of Natalie, Maybe they need to fly back and forth maybe they want to start a memeorial maybe they want to pay off what I'm sure cost them a fortune to be represented by a sham lawyer in Aruba as they tried desparately to find thier beloved daughter, maybe they just have to live...... LIFE while they have done other things to help others or themselves get through something like this in any way they can LIFE does go on and so do the bills ESPECIALLY when they are footing bills for the neverending exhaustive search for their daughter!!!!!! HOW DARE YOU JUDGE THEM IN ANY WAY!! WHO ARE YOU? Walk in thier shoes and tell me you'de be happy with someone, some stranger that knows nothing of that pain.... judging YOU!!
GET A LIFE or at the very least some compassion!!

WOW I hope you feel like an idiot now!! Now that it's obvious she was asking for money to secure an extortion charge against the POS OR possibly find the body of her beloved daughter so she could lay her to rest. She did ( as a mother always does) WHATEVER IT TOOK TO BRING HER HOME!! You are simple minded and small. I'm not sure what it is about some people, when they like to pour misery on top of a grieving family and friends. You are definately missing empathy and compassion....... hmmmm just like Joran LOOKS LIKE YOU 2 HAVE SOMETHING IN COMMON

Joran van der Sloot is a murdering, arrogant, spoiled, twisted monster. He drugs his victims then murders them. HIs dad can't pull any strings in Lima. I think he's in for a rude awakening....that you CAN"T get away with murder.

Peru does not have a death sentence. However, inmates there have the worst possible opinion of anyone locked up for killing a woman or a child. For him, prison will be a death sentence. Living in a Peruvian prison isn't great either. There is no TV, gym or hot water among other things. I remember a Russian immigrant architect working on the design for a Maryland prison. He told me that the prison had cable TV in every cell, a swimming pool and a gym. He said in Russia people would call it a resort and pay to go there. Nobody would pay to go to a Peruvian prison.
