Interpol: Joran van der Sloot arrested in Santiago

Joran van der Sloot is being investigated in connection with the death of Stephany Flores Ramirez, right, and was a suspect in the disappearance of Natalee Holloway.

[Updated at 1:13 p.m.] Joran van der Sloot has been arrested and is in police custody in Santiago, Chile, an Interpol spokesperson in Santiago told CNN.

Van der Sloot, who was previously considered a suspect in the 2005 disappearance of Alabama teenager Natalee Holloway in Aruba, is the main suspect in this week's slaying of 21-year-old Stephany Flores Ramirez, officials said. She was was found Wednesday in a Lima, Peru, hotel room registered to van der Sloot. Chilean police told CNN that paperwork showed that van der Sloot entered Chile on Wednesday.

Peruvian Interior Minister Octavio Salazar Miranda said Thursday that Peru has made arrangements with Interpol to extradite van der Sloot.

[Updated at 12:33 p.m.] Chilean investigators have told CNN Chile that Joran van der Sloot was spotted in Arica, Chile, near the Peruvian border and they believe he may still be there.

[Posted at 11:59 a.m.] Peruvian authorities investigating a young woman's slaying this week are working with officials from Interpol, Chile, Argentina and Colombia in the search for Joran van der Sloot, a Dutch man previously considered a suspect in the 2005 disappearance of Alabama teenager Natalee Holloway, the Peruvian justice minister said Thursday.

There is "incriminating evidence" linking van der Sloot to the killing of 21-year-old Stephany Flores Ramirez, who was found with multiple stab wounds in a Lima hotel room Wednesday, Cesar Guardia Vasquez, of Chile Interpol's criminal investigations unit, said at a news conference.

The hotel room where Flores was found was registered in van der Sloot's name, he said.

A hotel guest and an employee witnessed the pair entering the hotel room together at 5 a.m. on Sunday, Guardia said.

Police have video of the previous night, May 29, of van der Sloot and Flores together at the Atlantic City Casino in Lima, he said.

According to immigration officials, van der Sloot fled to Chile over land on Monday, Guardia said.

"We have all the evidence to show that the killer is this man," the victim's father, businessman and race-car driver Ricardo Flores told CNN en Español.

I think he's smart enough to have fled; I think he's dumb enough to think he'll find a way out of this one like before; and I hope he doesn't kill himself because I would much prefer that he have the opportunity to experience life in a Peruvian prison.

For those of us who are acquainted with the Holloway family, it sickens everyone to think that if they had just gotten him before, this young girl would be alive. So heartbreaking.........it also makes us wonder if there are more out there!

The difference being Osama is a mass murderer with significant political and religious significance, and this punk is a nobody that almost anyone would turn in for a few grand (or for free).

Death is too good for him. He deserves to be locked in a Peruvian jail for life.

I'd bet the bank that Natalee wasn't his first victim and Stephany isn't his second.. He got away with Natalee's "disappearance" because of his daddy. Daddy is dead and Joran's latest victim comes from an influential family in Peru. this POS is a serial killer. If someone tracked unsolved "disappearances" or murders in the area where he has gone to attend poker tournaements I'm sure they will find more of Joran's "work". He uses his "participation" in poker tournaments to find his victims.

You could project a drive-in movie on his forehead. He's an animal. And now he's toast.

He's too self-obsessed, self-loving, and flat out vain to take his own life. This kid loves himself, believes he's smarter than anyone else, and believes he has the right to take a life. He's alive and believes he will never be caught. I just hope the families or someone else with really bad intentions finds him before law enforcement so that he has to suffer. There is no amount of torture that would be enough for this piece of sub-human garbage.

A real black eye for Aruba's justice system. They failed miserably.

The Lima poker tournament he entered had a $2700 entry fee. He may have a lot of cash but not enough to last a long time. If he uses a credit card Interpol will find out where he is. Comes from a rich family so they'll want to try and cut off his access to funds.

    His father is dead.

Even if he kills himself I think the Kalpoe brothers know what happened to Natalie Holloway....they're just not talking because they're afraid of this sociopathic POS.

Yeah, you've been watching too much TV and Movies. Maybe there's a one armed man or a guy with one green eye too? Truly, how can you think he's being framed. How many dead girls must show up in this guy's wake before people like you wake up. He should get his trial, so that he can be proven f'ing guilty. Nuff said.

I hope they'll catch him and let him rot in jail. I was never convinced he killed Natalee, just that something bad happened to her, body wise, and instead of calling an ambulance, he got rid of the body. And there's no way you will not find a body on Aruba if it was disposed there. Him using a boat to dump her body is the most logic option which allows us to never find her body.
Let's see what he's got to say when they find him this time, because I don't think he can talk his way out of this one.
