Interpol: Joran van der Sloot arrested in Santiago

Joran van der Sloot is being investigated in connection with the death of Stephany Flores Ramirez, right, and was a suspect in the disappearance of Natalee Holloway.

[Updated at 1:13 p.m.] Joran van der Sloot has been arrested and is in police custody in Santiago, Chile, an Interpol spokesperson in Santiago told CNN.

Van der Sloot, who was previously considered a suspect in the 2005 disappearance of Alabama teenager Natalee Holloway in Aruba, is the main suspect in this week's slaying of 21-year-old Stephany Flores Ramirez, officials said. She was was found Wednesday in a Lima, Peru, hotel room registered to van der Sloot. Chilean police told CNN that paperwork showed that van der Sloot entered Chile on Wednesday.

Peruvian Interior Minister Octavio Salazar Miranda said Thursday that Peru has made arrangements with Interpol to extradite van der Sloot.

[Updated at 12:33 p.m.] Chilean investigators have told CNN Chile that Joran van der Sloot was spotted in Arica, Chile, near the Peruvian border and they believe he may still be there.

[Posted at 11:59 a.m.] Peruvian authorities investigating a young woman's slaying this week are working with officials from Interpol, Chile, Argentina and Colombia in the search for Joran van der Sloot, a Dutch man previously considered a suspect in the 2005 disappearance of Alabama teenager Natalee Holloway, the Peruvian justice minister said Thursday.

There is "incriminating evidence" linking van der Sloot to the killing of 21-year-old Stephany Flores Ramirez, who was found with multiple stab wounds in a Lima hotel room Wednesday, Cesar Guardia Vasquez, of Chile Interpol's criminal investigations unit, said at a news conference.

The hotel room where Flores was found was registered in van der Sloot's name, he said.

A hotel guest and an employee witnessed the pair entering the hotel room together at 5 a.m. on Sunday, Guardia said.

Police have video of the previous night, May 29, of van der Sloot and Flores together at the Atlantic City Casino in Lima, he said.

According to immigration officials, van der Sloot fled to Chile over land on Monday, Guardia said.

"We have all the evidence to show that the killer is this man," the victim's father, businessman and race-car driver Ricardo Flores told CNN en Español.

He's a serial killer. I bet if they start checking his history there will be others. He definitely thinks he's outsmarting everyone. It's a game to him.

Joran won't kill himself because he got away with killing Natalie, his sicko mind believes he will get away with it again. The only problem I see is the possibility he will be sent back home for the murder of Natalie and we've seen what kind of justice system they have there. Hopefully, his crime will stay in Peru.

I know! I know! Innocent until proven guilty but I still think that had justice been served the first time, it would not have been needed the second time. Sad really. Poor girls....

Anyone know how extradition works for counties in S America? Do they ship suspects back-and-forth? Isn't there at least one county in SA that won't extradite to Peru? Need advise asap.

You have to look at it in a case by case. Most countries have extradition agreements but if it is political it can drag for years. In a case like this you would be looking into a long game of hot potatoe if it wasn't that he is trying to hide in Chile. Now, once he is in Peru he can be in prison for years without a trial, well, if he was a person that wouldn't drag so much bad press for the judges. He still will have to pay a lot of money to the system once in Peru just so he stays alive inside prison (Peru has no death penalty but police and the courts will be extorting money out of this guys right and left, if you think Nancy Grace is creaming her pants, the peruvian judges and attorneys are all sitting in a huge puddle)...

If the people in Aruba had enough evidence to put Joran in jail they would have. There is still no prove that he did it. people said Natalee was drunk and using cocain so who knows what happend. This case is completely new and there is a lot pointing to his guilt. But he coould just be hiking through the mountain, not knowing what's going on.
    Innocent untill proven guilty!!!

Im pretty sure he knows exactly what happened to Holloway.....this one does seem to perfect to be true...he has been through the investigation process before so Im not convinced he did this one because it took three days to find the body...exactly 5 years to the day of when he killed Natalie...maybe someone recognized him and set his ass up...i don't believe he is this stupid....it will be interesting to see where this case goes....he might of came into his room and found her and fled...He is definately a murderer regardless.

This man thinks he will never get caught but he will. He cannot stop boasting about who he thinks he is. What a shame another woman had to die because of his presence in her life.

I hope he does not kill himself. I want to see him caught and made to fess up about the Holloway girl then sent to a Peru Prison. Imagine a new reality TV show, Vandorsloot in prison in Peru. I would watch it. Then kill him slowly, slowly, slowly.

I don't think that racist wants to get close ever again to a place full of Latinos. Chilean police is pretty responcible, I would trust them to do a better job than Peru or Argentina in a case like this. But I agree with some of the coments posted. This coward most likely will kill himself before they get him, and I hope he does, the country where he would be tried does not have a death penalty..
