Interpol: Joran van der Sloot arrested in Santiago

Joran van der Sloot is being investigated in connection with the death of Stephany Flores Ramirez, right, and was a suspect in the disappearance of Natalee Holloway.

[Updated at 1:13 p.m.] Joran van der Sloot has been arrested and is in police custody in Santiago, Chile, an Interpol spokesperson in Santiago told CNN.

Van der Sloot, who was previously considered a suspect in the 2005 disappearance of Alabama teenager Natalee Holloway in Aruba, is the main suspect in this week's slaying of 21-year-old Stephany Flores Ramirez, officials said. She was was found Wednesday in a Lima, Peru, hotel room registered to van der Sloot. Chilean police told CNN that paperwork showed that van der Sloot entered Chile on Wednesday.

Peruvian Interior Minister Octavio Salazar Miranda said Thursday that Peru has made arrangements with Interpol to extradite van der Sloot.

[Updated at 12:33 p.m.] Chilean investigators have told CNN Chile that Joran van der Sloot was spotted in Arica, Chile, near the Peruvian border and they believe he may still be there.

[Posted at 11:59 a.m.] Peruvian authorities investigating a young woman's slaying this week are working with officials from Interpol, Chile, Argentina and Colombia in the search for Joran van der Sloot, a Dutch man previously considered a suspect in the 2005 disappearance of Alabama teenager Natalee Holloway, the Peruvian justice minister said Thursday.

There is "incriminating evidence" linking van der Sloot to the killing of 21-year-old Stephany Flores Ramirez, who was found with multiple stab wounds in a Lima hotel room Wednesday, Cesar Guardia Vasquez, of Chile Interpol's criminal investigations unit, said at a news conference.

The hotel room where Flores was found was registered in van der Sloot's name, he said.

A hotel guest and an employee witnessed the pair entering the hotel room together at 5 a.m. on Sunday, Guardia said.

Police have video of the previous night, May 29, of van der Sloot and Flores together at the Atlantic City Casino in Lima, he said.

According to immigration officials, van der Sloot fled to Chile over land on Monday, Guardia said.

"We have all the evidence to show that the killer is this man," the victim's father, businessman and race-car driver Ricardo Flores told CNN en Español.

He'll be caught. And he'll offer to tell about Natalie Holloway if he gets some kind of deal, like no death penalty.

Natalee Holloway isn't peruvian, nor did she disappear in Peru. So why exactly would a peruvian prosecutor have any incentive to accept that plea deal?

The loss of these two young ladies is tragic. I'm very sad for them and for their families.
Now, regardless of his guilt, I want to know how this guy is getting so many ladies. As a young lady, myself, I find it hard to believe so many girls would go for him. He's kinda on the doofy side!

Wrong. Just because he is finally forgiven by God does not mean he will get away without paying his dues to the consequences of his chosen actions. In this realm or the other realm-which by the way, both realms exist within the limitlessness of God. Just because you are forgiven it does not mean you stop being bound by the law of consequences.

I hope you have read enough to know that the demons do not exist and that Satan was invented so that the elders who were in the process of translating the bible from the 73 books, could explain why bad things happen to good people. Even if Satan were to exist, then he is just a badass angel, therefore all the zillions of good angels are there to kick his sorry badass, why would anyone worry about it?

Where is his mother? How can she live with herself knowing that another woman has died at the hands of her son? Well, I hope the saying "what goes around comes around" is true. I'd like to see the day come when he is no longer breathing; and, he has to face his judgement in the spirit world with his victims as the jury.

his mother is still in Aruba not controlling his actions. I'm sorry, but are you actually blaming her for his faults and murders?

    • Me

No Debrah, i'm not blaming her for his faults or his actions. I'm blaming her for being a part of this entire sordid mess. Her husband helped cover the first mess Joran made and no one will ever convince me that she knows nothing about Natalee's disappearance. I feel she is partly responsible for allowing her son to continue with his murderous ways.

yes deborah I believe they are blaming the parents. We are what we are as a result of our parents and their parenting skills.
how we behave is a reflection of what we were taught . Morals or lack of.

Kitty, I disagree. I know several cases where the parenting was good, but the children were bad. The way people are raised doesn't always equal the way people are. If someone is evil, he won't do good no matter how good his or her upbringing was.

His father has found his special place in hell. What gets me is his mother. She also knows (as I would know if my children were capable of this or of lying about it) and allows Natalee's mother to go forth in life not knowing what happened to her daughter. Her special place is waiting as well. Now this guy has struck again. I understand wanting to protect your children, but really. Well Joran, time to face the piper. Who's going to cover this up for you???

    June 3, 2010 at 12:44 pm | Report abuse |
    • Kelsy

I think families that cover up for antisocial offspring are also ultimately covering up for themselves and their reputations -they know that their parenting will likely come under scrutiny and be speculated about, rightly or wrongly. Even worse if you are a respected judge like Joran's father was.

(um, am I imagining this or does Joran bear a strong resemblance to Frankenstein? Just the prominent frontal lobe and dorky hairstyle...)
