Ohio teen wins National Spelling Bee with 'stromuhr'
Ohio teen Anamika Veeramani won the Scripps National Spelling Bee Friday night with the word stromuhr, an instrument for measuring the flow of viscous substances.
"I'm really, really happy. This is one of the best moments of my life," the 14-year-old said after the annual spell-off.
Anamika, of North Royalton, tied for fifth place last year. Her victory makes Ohio the state to produce the most spelling bee winners with 9.
The 83rd Scripps National Spelling Bee began Thursday with 273 spellers ranging in age from 8 to 15.
Friday's final rounds began with 10 contestants, who were eliminated one by one by words such as ochidore, a shore crab, and terribilita, a term applied typically to the art of Michelangelo describing the power and grandeur of his work.

Congratulations Anamika, your victory is no doubt a reflection of your intelligence and work ethic! However, I will say that spelling is one of the most worthless talents in and of itself, especially with word processing. But, if we're to be honest, so are virtually all other talents that are lauded – the fastest person to swim, the person who can hit a white ball with a metal club into a cup the quickest – they are all worthless talents. So, you're victory should be celebrated as a reflection of your intelligence and work ethic. My point is that these talents you have would have been better spent on something more worthwhile and meaningful. But you're only 14 – so there's plenty of time for that!

This is not a worthless talent. These kids have acquired very important skills that is discipline, hard work, dedication....in fact we can say Olympic games are also worthless, which in fact is not true.
Who cares what nationality or race she is that's not the point. The point is some kid educated in America won and that is a big deal. Either someone is sacrificing a lot to put their child in private school or this child managed to work thou all the BS in a public school. Hooray for her and her parents!

Being a first generation american indian I can say that I value the hard work which I put in to come and do good in USA. I also try to impart the same ideals to my kids. Whether they will live up to them is a different matter, but I will at least try till the very end. I am sure other immigrants who have come to USA have done so/ are doing so for their kids. Honestly that is what matters, be it immigrant or native, as long as you can spend time with your kids be it sports or education or anything else, they will continue to blossom

Actually, Apple has a lot of employees that are Indian too. So does google. The managers for ipads and iphones are Indian too.
If I remember correctly, India has the highest rate of computer qualified students in the world right now.
I am not biased, but there is no smartest. When u used at extrem your brain u will be smart. Brain is like a farm land u need fertilizer and u need to move soil, that isn't come overnight u need to work hard for it. Memorize think is slightly different to be smart. Smart person find narrow aspect of the thing among the broad aspect.
