Ohio teen Anamika Veeramani won the Scripps National Spelling Bee Friday night with the word stromuhr, an instrument for measuring the flow of viscous substances.
"I'm really, really happy. This is one of the best moments of my life," the 14-year-old said after the annual spell-off.
Anamika, of North Royalton, tied for fifth place last year. Her victory makes Ohio the state to produce the most spelling bee winners with 9.
The 83rd Scripps National Spelling Bee began Thursday with 273 spellers ranging in age from 8 to 15.
Friday's final rounds began with 10 contestants, who were eliminated one by one by words such as ochidore, a shore crab, and terribilita, a term applied typically to the art of Michelangelo describing the power and grandeur of his work.
As a retired American English teacher, I really object to calling this ridiculous contest a "Spelling bee." It is a a vocabulary test at best. The inclusion of foreign words and the latest ridiculous one is simply nonsense. The poor kids that subject themselves to this parental abuse should be allowed to do something more productive, creative and imaginative. Ugh, the human condition really seems absurd.
Would you have said the same thing if a white american won this repeatedly.. I find Nascar insinuating.. howzzatt??
'As a retired American English teacher, I really object to calling this ridiculous contest a "Spelling bee." It is a a vocabulary test at best. The inclusion of foreign words and the latest ridiculous one is simply nonsense'
That is a stupid statement. The words used are all words found in the English language. Any English teacher knows that there are a lot of words in the English language that have a foreign origin, either Latin, French, German, even Indian (verandah for example) so to complain about 'foreign' words is ridiculous. And this is hardly a vocabulary test that they learn by rote, they have to know the root history of a word and work out how a word it spelt from there, I say thats pretty impressive.
To shankar. NASCAR is insinuating? And just what does it insinuate?
I wonder if she will make a run for "Miss America"? Probably not, she's already too bright to qualify.
Who cares about the race of the child who won.Lets just be happy for her.
USA people cannot compete with Indians, because even if 0.001% of Indians are super smart and hardworking and come to the USA – out of a billion+ that's a lot of people. So we need to restrict that.
Secondly the culture is way too different, before you come leave your past values behind (where-ever you are from)
One example – It's not alright to tip a waitress 1$ for 35$ meal.
Many Indians know that the minimum wage is about $7, but they do not know that the minimum wage for waitresses is about $2. Yes, they get paid $2/hr by the restuarants (when receiving tips is allowed). So, tipping good becomes mandatory, not voluntary. I know we grew up in an environment where our grandparents exploited the maid servants a lot, but now it is a different environment, both in America and India. Please tip good, if not it is one of the fastest ways to lose respect. If the restaurant pays $7 to waitress instead of $2, your food will cost more. Please pass on your savings to the waiters.
Congratulations to an example to all young people, and old. Learning is fun. I hope that she is very proud. America should be very proud of her.

Which means – People are astonished to see me standing at the top, but no one has seen me climbing hard!
I couldn't have said it better...Congrats to you Anamika
Beautiful sentiment....
To All Indians,
I am Indian...But, I can't appreciate your negative comments on americans or proud comments about Indian....She is an American....as you are living in U.S start appreciating the americans. I sincerely congratulate her......I believe in hard work and luck and not on hard work alone....
thanks,
Sridhar
Ohio now has a championship and a real champion and it wasn't Lebron James. They don't need him anymore.
Congratulation Anamika...All the best for life ahead.
No need to pay attention to what is being discussed in such forums...!!!
Congrats Anamika on a job well done. I dont think race matters. Anyone who studies hard wins. My guess is that americans of indian descent seem to have taken a liking to the spelling bee.
CONGRATS to her!
Anamika – Sanksrit for a person with no name. Methaphor – A person whose destiny is not determined.
She carved her own destiny. GO on girl!
What kind of investigatory journalism is this??? No mention of the winning word!
@Sri,
British didn't go back from India even though they were calling us names for a few centuries.
@all Indian slaves here, you are doing a good job of it, you got it in your blood.
You are retarded....you don't get the point....it is better you get off from comments section.....You are learning bad things from Britishers.....
If you want to be a citizen of world...be a good citizen not a racist...

Klau, why do you hate Inadian women wearing good clothes? Now I know why your women do not like to wear clothes!
Was she attending public school, private school or homeshooled? The article doesnt say.
I found it she attends a Catholic School I knew she wasn't publicly schooled they never are.
From the spelling bee web site:
Five of the six most recent national champions were public school students.
