White House correspondent Helen Thomas retires

Helen Thomas, middle, will retire effective immediately, her company said.

Veteran Washington reporter and columnist Helen Thomas announced Monday that she is retiring effective immediately, according to a statement from the Hearst Corporation.

Thomas's decision came days after her controversial statement that Jews should "get the hell out of Palestine."

"I deeply regret my comments I made last week regarding the Israelis and the Palestinians," Thomas said in a statement. "They do not reflect my heart-felt belief that peace will come to the Middle East only when all parties recognize the need for mutual respect and tolerance. May that day come soon.’’

Thomas under fire for saying Jews in Israel should go back to Germany, Poland

True peace will come only when the Messiah returns. There will be a temporary peace when the Antichrist brokers a peace agreement between Israel and her Arab neighbors, but that will only last 3 and 1/2 years.

Like you're saying, I'm also sure "there are a lot of Americans who would agree".
    We call them racists.
Make any racist comment, about any race you choose, and you will find "a lot of Americans who would agree".
    Does it make it right?
Your words remind me why the administration should be kept staffed by the few people of can LEARN and THINK, rather than with "a lot of Americans who would agree".

I agree with Roy 100%. No one is committing racism. This isn't about Judaism...it's about Zionism and a placement of the Jewish people in a small geographic area based on the bible. In the modern world this makes no sense. Not to mention, the REAL racism took place when they were placed there, away from the rest of the civilized world, in the first place.

@ Concerned. They wern't "placed" anywhere. They wanted their own land and had been asking for that priviledge for years before they were offered the land. They wern't forced to take it.

Helen has had a distinguished career. Her sentiments were, indeed, poorly expressed but not at all unreasonable. Supporting Palestine's right to be free from Israel's unwelcome control is not anti-Jewish. I have many Jewish friends who also support the right of the people in Palestine to live freely. Peace will never come through violence, only through dialogue and mutual respect.

"Peace will never come through violence, only through dialogue and mutual respect." Yeeeah... maybe we should have started off with that one when Hitler was trying to take over the world. I'm sure dialogue and mutual respect would have ended the war much sooner. Oh wait, we DID try that and Hitler just smiled and shook hands and then betrayed all of humanity a minute later.

Too bad she completely negated her career acting like a baby having a tantrum on T.V. But, it was nice to see her true colors, she really put a damper on her "movement" by making her statements. Again, it was entertaining watching her, I have finally been able to laugh after watching how the biased "media" has done everything they can to blame the Jews for everything.

Better the Jews than the arabs. They would be suicide reporters, hahahaha. They would arrive the scene of a top story, then blow themselves and everyone around them up.

Natalie, you are not a clear thinker! Many of the Jews in Israel have been there for generations. Some families have been there for millenia. Most who left were forced out or left under duress. Many who are there now, escaped there when they were being murdered by the millions in Europe. You can not equate that situation with illegal immigrants slipping across the border in search of jobs or to run drugs. If your thought process is so stunted and superficial, you might consider keeping your ill-conceived opinions to yourself and saving yourself from embarrassment.

Helen Thomas should not have apologized for her statement concerning "jews" making "Yerida" out of Palestine; it is an illegal occupied territory conccocted by theodor herzl, father of the secular zionist movement. Furthermore, equating her sentiments to that of saying "African-Americans should return to Africa" is preposterous; African-Americans did not illegally invade & occupied america but were illegally brought here. The comparable statement would be: "let these white-anglo-saxon americans & afrikaner weerstandsbeweging boers return to europe." Be Blessed, Peace & Shalom,

I strongly suggest that YOU READ AND LEARN HISTORY!! The Palestinians didn't fall out of the sky! Israel was CREATED on their current land, this is ONE! Secondly, Israel didn't just stay and get along with them, instead, They became OCCUPIERS! and they are abusing human rights of Palestinians! Stop being selfishly and conveniently! ignorant.

As I stated above, anyone living in Palestine is considered a Palestinian, Jews and Arabs alike. Just because Jews are no longer called Palestinians doesn't mean that they aren't. The only reason why they aren't called Palestinians is because Palestine was renamed Israel. Both Jews AND Arabs lived on that land, that's why it was divided between the two groups.

Israel (Hebrew: יִשְׂרָאֵל‎, Yisrā'el; Arabic: إِسْرَائِيلُ‎, Isrā'īl), officially the State of Israel (Hebrew: מְדִינַת יִשְׂרָאֵל (help·info), Medīnat Yisrā'el; Arabic: دَوْلَةُ إِسْرَائِيلَ‎, Dawlat Isrā'īl), is a country in Western Asia located on the eastern shore of the Mediterranean Sea. It borders Lebanon in the north, Syria in the northeast, Jordan and the West Bank in the east, the Gaza Strip and Egypt on the southwest, and contains geographically diverse features within its relatively small area.[7][8] Israel is the world's only predominantly Jewish state,[9] with a population of 7.5 million people, of whom 5.7 million are Jewish.[10][11] Arab citizens of Israel form the country's second-largest ethnic group, which includes Muslims, Christians, Druze, and Samaritans.

The modern State of Israel has its historical and religious roots in the Biblical Land of Israel, also known as Zion, a concept central to Judaism since ancient times.[12][13][14] Political Zionism took shape in the late-19th century and the Balfour Declaration of 1917 formalized British policy preferring the establishment of a Jewish state. Following World War I, the League of Nations granted Great Britain the Mandate for Palestine and the responsibility for establishing "the Jewish national home" within it.[15]

No, she didn't have to apologize. Did anyone put a gun to her head? She apologized because she is a sweet, old lady, NOT!!! She did it so you stupid freaks would have something to complain about. She did it to fill all your naszi's hearts with hate. She had no other reason to apologize,it's not like she had to go back to the office the next day, she retired. It is called manipulation, narcisism, with alot passive aggressive personality disorder, tubby thomas clearly has it. Most of you all sound like idiots.

Get a book on history, read it, learn it. Or just go to Wikipedia, not that difficult. Shut up until you have all your facts.

Over the past three thousand years, the name "Israel" (meaning "Struggled with God") has meant, in common and religious usage, both the Land of Israel and the entire Jewish nation.[24] According to the Bible, Jacob is renamed Israel after successfully wrestling with an angel of God.[25] Wikipedia

Any educated person would have easily understood the message and context of her words. I am sure she would have selected better words in retrospect; to those that are angry at this comment: relax. I am sick and tired of hearing about public figures being forced into retirement or resigning because of what they about Israel or Jews! Look let's be real, what happened to the Jewish people was horrible and no one deserves what they went through, however it should not be used as a crutch everytime someone speaks negatively on Israel. Let's face facts: the very same people who what to be left alone in Israel can't seem to help people who want the SAME (Palestinians). Israel has done some questionble things that make me as a US citizen cringe. Because I said that does not make me anti-semetic, it makes me someone who is not in lock step with Israel...there's a difference; Isreal isn't always right and ppl who speak against Israel (even with poor word choice) aren't anti-jew.

I agree that Israel isn't always right. No one's perfect. But I think Israel has shown much restraint after being attacked by over 11,000 Grads, Missils and Mortars in the past 8 years and after being attacked by three Arab military coalitions in the first 30 years of it's existance.

First and foremost the responsibility of the media is to report the news in an unbiased manner. Helen Thomas in most instances did not do that. She sat in the front row of Whote House press briefings and used it over and over as a platform for her political beliefs. That is a job for a commentator, not a corespondant. How can I or anyone trust a news source that provides bias reporting? The news media needs to go back to it's roots. Report the news and not create it.
Perhaps Ms. Thomas finally recognized that she was no longer doing her job.

She did have the right. I agree, I am glad she did it. Just like any person has the right to hiss on the sidewalk, and act like a crazy half cat/half human.. Both are examples of idiotic, crazy behavior. One realizes how stupid she active, showing a temper tatrum on T.V. and retires, the other, hopefully, would be committed.
