Fix it: Your latest oil disaster solutions

As BP tries various methods to stop the oil disaster scientists, students and imaginative amateurs have suggested ways to stop or clean up the Gulf oil disaster in the days and weeks after the oil rig explosion that killed 11 workers and started the biggest environmental disaster in U.S. history.

CNN is featuring ideas from iReporters and experts alike on TV and taking a closer look at which ones might actually work. iReport: Have an idea on how to fix the oil disaster? Send your ideas

Here is one of your latest suggestions:

You can check out all of the ideas submitted so far on the blog and if you’ve got a solution to share, you can upload your video to CNN iReport.

I'm not sure how this oil pipe is but why couldn't something be done further up the pipe to stop the oil flow. Or build something around the pipe further down and then split the pipe open so it flows into this.

if the blowout preventers can not entirely be replace why not go down the pipeline find a spot put a slice in it almost all the way down take a real heavy piece of the thin metal to slide into slot and then sauter it in place to pipe cutting flow off down the rest of the pipe to blowout preventer 🙂

Hair. Human hair works best, but pet hair is also helpful. Hair soaks up oil. All hair types work, even if the hair has been colored or chemically treated. Even hair clippings from the salon or barber shop floor are extremely helpful. Salons need to send in clippings, and Americans should all get a haircut at a participating salon. Salons and individuals can get information here: http://www.matteroftrust.org/programs/hairmatsinfo.html

I followed the link and found this to be quite an interesting possibility for helping with the clean up. It would be fascinating if the American public would mobilize for something like this as they similarly did during WWII when materials were needed. Of course those kinds of efforts take time to get going and time is not on our side as hurricane season is approaching. But this is a really interesting idea and is something already being utilized for smaller spills. What a way to recycle!!

OIL EATING MICROBES into the gulf? Go to you tube and type those 3 words & see for yourself. They clean any oil spill within minutes!

Also where is Kevin Costner's machine & how come the news is no longer bringing it up after raving about it? Who is preventing the Gulf from being cleaned up & why?

Why aren't they dumping the oil eating microbes? They have been scientifically tested & used in previous spills. Anderson, you read me? Somebody do something!

Make no mistake: This oil spill was DONE ON PURPOSE! Why isn't USA dumping the OIL EATING MICROBES into the gulf? The US government is IN CAHOOTS WITH BP & PREVENTING THE OIL GEYSER FROM BEING STOPPED! How come NO ONE ON THE USA NEWS is bringing up the oil eating microbes or Kevin Costner's Waterworld machine any more? Because KC got paid off to STFU! 13,000 psi oil pressure at the wellhead, minus water pressure at 1 mile = 10,700 psi. 20" dia pipe = 3.4 million lbs of force to overcome. A tapered steel mandrel dropped "down the throat" of the wellhead, much like a pencil into a straw, is a good idea, but not practical. It would have to weigh over 3 million lbs.

Sounds crazy...you would think the pipes would blow when being under that type of pressure..

What about a cap on top of the exhisting cap? Since the cap is fabricated to an uncorrupted and specific design (obviously unlike the pipe after the explosion), couldn't another (larger) cap be (quickly) fabricated and placed to perfectly attach. Then ALL of the oil could be siphoned.

To all you enviormentalist,if the Scientist in Russia and USA would have used there idea to do a small nuclear blast, like they suggeted the amount of damaged compared to what we have now would have been far less then this horrific mess and it would have been done weeks ago.But maybe this was your idea to use this to shut down the oil wells conspiracy theory.

My idea to contain the spill is: I think one of the problems is the pressure and attaching the pipe to a pipe to the surface.MY idea is to use a flexable pipe like a trash bag tied below the valve and just contain the oil from flowing into the gulf. A mile long trash bag tied around the bottom of the leak, letting the oil flow as it is doing now but not into the ocean. FLOATS AROUND THE TOP OF THIS LARGE BAG WOULD bring the oil to the top for pumping off and the bag would contain the oil from destroying the gulf. The bag could just float around in the water with the oil being pumped off.

Its simple: hire oil rig workers to come up with a plan to stop this mess! Rather than going out and seeking "experts" who know nothing about oil rigs or have never endured the labor actual workers experience on an oil rig.

    Please join our cause!

We are currently seeing the destruction that's taking place because of BPs oil drilling.
The oil is now found, not only floating, but even 500m under water! This means that the oil is even trapping animals swimming beneath the surface of the water and causing them to die!

Not only do we have a crisis on our hands, but we have a choice...

Something needs to be done, why don't we start today?
    Before its TOO LATE!
