Bin Laden hunter's mission praised, vilified on internet

Gary Faulkner, seen in this 2006 mugshot, traveled to Pakistan several times to find Osama bin Laden.

Intrigue over Gary Faulkner’s one-man hunt for Osama bin Laden has sparked both outrage and praise on the internet and blogosphere.

Pakistani authorities announced this week that they had picked up the 50-year-old Colorado man near the border with Afghanistan. Armed with a pistol, sword, night-vision equipment and Christian literature, Faulkner told police that he had been hunting bin Laden since the September, 11, 2001 attacks.

Some have dismissed him as mentally unstable, which his brother, a physician, has denied.

But others have lauded his attempt to do what the U.S. government has failed to do for nearly a decade: find the head of al Qaeda, which carried out the worst terrorist attack on U.S. soil.

Faulkner’s exploits have inspired a slew of nicknames on Twitter and Facebook, including Rambo, American Ninja and the new Chuck Norris.

He’s even been turned into an animated character on YouTube.

A Twitter post suggested Faulkner should face off against another daunting foe: the BP oil spill.

“Ask #GaryFaulkner to swim to the sea floor and plug the hole with his fist,” @HerbCarmen posted.

Faulkner’s family is taking it all in stride.

“I do like American ninja, that is pretty cool,” Scott Faulkner said

He said he believed his brother’s mission has tapped into an element of American society.

“It’s true Americana. We all fall in love with Chuck Norris, we fall in love with Clint Eastwood, We fall in love with John Wayne,” Scott Faulkner said. “Why? Because they fight for the American way. They find the bad guy, they may get roughed up a little bit, knocked in the dirt but at the end of the day they come out on top.”

But not all of the internet chatter has been favorable. “Looney Christian warrior” pops up a lot. Scott Faulkner admits his brother’s plan is not something he would attempt, but he insists that Gary is perfectly sane.

“Having known Gary for 43 years I can honestly say he’s not a sociopath, he’s not psychotic, he’s not crazy. He hasn’t harmed anyone.” Faulkner said. “He is an American hero.”

He predicts that Gary will enjoy the media attention when he returns to the United States and suggests who should play the lead role if his brother’s his story ever becomes a movie:

“Jackie Chan with a wig,” Faulkner said. “He’s got the sense of humor and the physical ability.”

His religious influence just makes me laugh... but "the why" doesn't really matter. This man is a hero. It would be great to see more Americans behind him and put aside the fact they don't agree with his inspiration.

At least the man is committed to something and has the guts to attempt to carry it out. If we had many more like him the subhuman muslim pigs would be diminished in numbers. Don't discount that we will wipe the animals off the planet as soon as we can figure what to do with their worthless body parts.

This guy probably realized that the American government has no desire to kill Bin Laden, just keep tabs on him. Although the Pakistanis picked him up I'm sure the U.S. had something to do with picking up this nut job.

I don't get the praise for this guy. If he was serious about going undercover to get Bin Laden, he'd not be hauling around a cache of dead-giveaway Christian conversion lit. He's a half cracked religious nut thinking he's on a mission from Jeebus. And a sword? Never bring a knife to a gunfight... did he think if he found Bin Laden's holed up in a cave with his most devout that they'd lay down arms and surrender because of the power of his Bible?

Also, people go to and from Pakistan every day, the fact that he went there a few times isn't a sign of divine protection. Any one of us could go over there, wander around for a few days hoping to spot OBL like he's Waldo, and come back unmolested. They say he barely spoke because it would give him away and if he did everyone probably figured he was just either crazy or CIA and left him alone so as to not get themselves chopped up by the crazy man.

I would like to give this guy some credit, like calling him “brave” or something, but I think “stupid”, or “crazy” would be a lot closer to the truth. If I learn that he had specifically learned to speak Dari, Farsi, Pashtu, or Arabic in order to accomplish his endeavor, I will apologize later for my descriptions of him. Without knowing at least one of these languages he would never have gotten anywhere close to Bin Laden. The “Christian literature” probably also would have gotten him a death sentence if he had been caught by anyone within a mile of where Bin Laden is hiding out.

Nobody here even thought about mentioning why Bin Laden has not been caught yet. There is no American criminal on the planet that would not have easily been “dimed out” for 25 hundred dollars. I believe Bin Laden still has a 25 million dollar bounty on his head, doesn’t he? That is because, many of the people who know where he is hiding may not like him or what he has done, or what he stands for, but they hate the U.S. that much more. I am sure that there are actually many people who know where Bin Laden is at right at this moment, but they will not say, because money is not important to them. Materialism does not rule their world; honor does.

In other words, because of this, I do not forgive the leaders of America who have indirectly caused this kind of widespread hatred for the U.S. across the world, by their policies of hypocracy they have made almost the entire rest of the world hate me for no other reason than I am an “American”.

Seriously I do hope they catch Bin Laden. Like the article said theres a $25 million dollar reward for it and its been how many years now?

But lets say he does get caught, brought to trial, locked up for life or death penalty. Then what?
What makes u think this will do anything besides make a lot of people feel better.

The radicals will only take it as martydom and soemone else will take his place and nothing gets weakened on their side. It will just keep going and what then? Another $25 million dollars?
Do you see what im getting at?

O come on folks – this guy is a complete wacka-doodle!! You can't honestly suggest that this guy has all his brain cells. If his own brother who is a cyke dr can't tell he's got a sick mind, I'm glad I don't go to him for help-he might need to take some refresher courses. It's obvious this guy has visions of grandure & I'm sure they all humor him, even in the muslim countries. They just confiscate his weapons & put him on a plane back to the states – unti next time.........
