Bin Laden hunter's mission praised, vilified on internet

Gary Faulkner, seen in this 2006 mugshot, traveled to Pakistan several times to find Osama bin Laden.

Intrigue over Gary Faulkner’s one-man hunt for Osama bin Laden has sparked both outrage and praise on the internet and blogosphere.

Pakistani authorities announced this week that they had picked up the 50-year-old Colorado man near the border with Afghanistan. Armed with a pistol, sword, night-vision equipment and Christian literature, Faulkner told police that he had been hunting bin Laden since the September, 11, 2001 attacks.

Some have dismissed him as mentally unstable, which his brother, a physician, has denied.

But others have lauded his attempt to do what the U.S. government has failed to do for nearly a decade: find the head of al Qaeda, which carried out the worst terrorist attack on U.S. soil.

Faulkner’s exploits have inspired a slew of nicknames on Twitter and Facebook, including Rambo, American Ninja and the new Chuck Norris.

He’s even been turned into an animated character on YouTube.

A Twitter post suggested Faulkner should face off against another daunting foe: the BP oil spill.

“Ask #GaryFaulkner to swim to the sea floor and plug the hole with his fist,” @HerbCarmen posted.

Faulkner’s family is taking it all in stride.

“I do like American ninja, that is pretty cool,” Scott Faulkner said

He said he believed his brother’s mission has tapped into an element of American society.

“It’s true Americana. We all fall in love with Chuck Norris, we fall in love with Clint Eastwood, We fall in love with John Wayne,” Scott Faulkner said. “Why? Because they fight for the American way. They find the bad guy, they may get roughed up a little bit, knocked in the dirt but at the end of the day they come out on top.”

But not all of the internet chatter has been favorable. “Looney Christian warrior” pops up a lot. Scott Faulkner admits his brother’s plan is not something he would attempt, but he insists that Gary is perfectly sane.

“Having known Gary for 43 years I can honestly say he’s not a sociopath, he’s not psychotic, he’s not crazy. He hasn’t harmed anyone.” Faulkner said. “He is an American hero.”

He predicts that Gary will enjoy the media attention when he returns to the United States and suggests who should play the lead role if his brother’s his story ever becomes a movie:

“Jackie Chan with a wig,” Faulkner said. “He’s got the sense of humor and the physical ability.”

This guy actually kinda looks like Bin Laden. It's a good thing that he got stopped or some soldier probably would have seen him walking around, thought he was Bin Laden, and shot him.

All you complainers out there likely have big guts and can't tie your own shoes. I bet you like watching the Kardashians and think that Linsey lohan is a real hero. This guy is more man than most. John wayne is more than just a movie star, he is a perception of what we hope we could all be not some vein reality star.

I can't speak for everyone else here, but I'm a normal-weight man who spends nearly every single waking hour of my days (including some weekends) in an American research lab, searching for a cure for cancer. I like to think that I'm a bit more productive than some guy running around a foreign country who's trying to take a life, making the rest of us Americans look like a bunch of religion-crazed barbarians while he's at it. He may have a certain sort of courage (or he's just very delusional, thinking that God will just magically make everything right for him), but that courage would really be better-served somewhere else.

God Bless – I am sure Jesus himself would have taken guns and gone after him. I always like to hear "Christianity and Guns" – it just fits perfect.

Couple things: Firstly I want to say that as a Soldier in the Army I give this guy some credit. We get months of training and some of the most advanced technology in the world and we still haven't found Bin Laden. Normally I would say this guy is an idiot and is going to die, but he has been over there for a while and seems to be just fine. Crazy? Maybe, but then again talk to almost an American service member and you will find most of us have lost a few marbles along the way. Props to this guy for taking some initiative, but for the love of god I hope this doesn't inspire imitators. There are enough people dying over there, both US and Afghan and Iraqi. One less means the world to me...

Bin Laden cut his hair, shaved his beard, lost the turban, and changed his name to Barack. He's still screwing with the US.

he was already a wanted man when Peter Bergen was it ? The gay journalist, sat down with him in his tent.
How hard could it be to find him?

Only the completely uninformed could think that the destruction on 9/11 (after the initial plane crashes) were the result of natural events; fire & gravity. Those buildings were blown up. Plain and simple. See 911research.wtc7 website. see the video called, North Tower Exploding. Read the witness testimony, look at the dna results, 1100 missing bodies, etc.. Look at the facts and the conclusion that explosives destroyed towers 1,2&7, becomes inescapable. (whatever names ignorant people choose to call you for being reasonable and informed)

I won't mock him, or praise him. I just say he's looking for the wrong person and in the wrong area.

IF and IF Osama is alive, he's probably laughing his turban off in a palace in Saudi Arabia or some similar place. He escaped Pakistan/Afghanistan long ago, the special forces were literally ordered to stand down and allow it to happen.

The real culprit is the rich elite, the NeoCons, the international bankers. They set this up.

Case in point: The Twin Towers. They weren't meant except as coincidence and fancy to be the world's tallest building, which they were for a few months. They were an attempt to "Corner the market" for prime real estate. And it was a lousy bet. Just after they were built a huge economic downturn hit, followed by an expansion in technology, fax machines, computers, the internet. It was no longer necessary to have an office in a giant, centralized building for maximum national and international access.

So, the towers were barely making enough rent to pay the upkeep. And they'd cost, due to new laws on Asbestos, more to tear down legally than to build.

But, the owner is gone one day, the thing collapses, a year later he gets his full initial investment back.
And all we got is a new mosque and generic office space. No "Twin towers but one floor taller at least!" since it costs more than twice as much to make 1-100 story building as it does 4-25 story ones...
