Oldest known images of apostles Andrew, John found

The oldest known image of the apostles Andrew and John have been discovered in catacombs under the city of Rome, dating back to the 4th century A.D., archaeologists announced Tuesday.

The paintings were found in the same location where the oldest known painting of St. Paul was discovered last year, the Pontifical Commission for Sacred Archeology said Tuesday.

i have no actual comment about the article itself, just that these are some of the funniest comments i've ever read on CNN. CNN.com readers are truly comical! i enjoyed the comments WAY more than the article;)

Good article except for the last paragraph that reads: "The apostles were a group of a dozen men, according to Christian tradition, who spread the gospel of Jesus after his crucifixion."

First of all it is not tradition, it is fact, that the apostles worked and some even gave their lives to spread the gospel of salvation through Jesus. Second, it was not after His crucifixion that they started spreading the gospel but not until after His resurrection and the Holy Spirit came did they starting preaching and spreading the gospel.

jesus is rotting in the dirt of palestine and you won't be going to heaven when you die.

Are you SURE he's actually even in the dirt? I don't assume he ever existed.

In response to "American". I have nothing but pity for you. I also have a question for. Let us say for a moment that you have heard about Jesus, about, heaven, and also about hell, would you not want to "play it safe" and go heaven instead of hell? If there was (and there is) a God would you not want to "play" by His rules and go to heaven, a place of eternal joy and happiness instead of to a place where there is nothing but eternal agony, pain, and suffering?

      I agree with Ray B 100%

typical cowardly responses to 'american'. your beliefs in jesus are based on selfishness (a desire to go to a place you don't deserve) and fear (believe in the big sky pimp daddy...or else).

"you will have to answer to him" "why not believe? why not play it 'safe'?"

cowards. you've all but admitted that the 'god' you believe in is a petty bully and monster.

Ok then, you better play it safe and listen to the teachings of the Qur'an then! You know, just to be safe!

Rob...that is your big commitment to God...you are "playing it safe"! All of your teachings and all of your prayers are boiled down to "playing is safe"...in an effort to avoid going to a bad place? This is not belief nor religion, this is fear and brainwashing. If you have a belief in something, standup like RayB and make a solid statement.

I'm not religous by any means, but I have respect for those who have a belief and followit. But you....telling people to "play it safe"..is what is wrong with organized religion today. Fear, manipulation, and brainwashing is what you are preaching. "Worship God or the worst possible thing will happen to you." Not a very good thing to put your beliefs into.

This makes you nothing short of a narcissist. You don't love "god," you love yourself and only care about your own survival. Were there actually a deity, on judgement day you would receive the same fate as American for your false belief.

      @ atheist

You are absolutely right I have a desire to go to a place I don't deserve to go. The only reason I know i am going there is because I know that Jesus Christ died for my sins and I acknowledge that I am a very sinful person, no better then anyone else in this world, it is only through faith in Jesus Christ and His death and resurrection that I may go to a place that I don't deserve to go to. I do not, will not, and can not admit that my God and Saviour is "petty bull and monster" because He is not a "petty bull and monster". We mere human beings are the ones that disobeyed Him and fell into sin when He first created us. It is our fault that we are living in this world full of so much grief, suffering, and sin in this world.

rob, you are like a machine spewing out pre-recorded babble that someone else programmed in. your beliefs are not your own...you just happened to be born into a country and culture where on particular religion was more popular that others, where, most likely, your family inculcated you with your current beliefs, and which were reinforced by your own fears of death and a desire for higher justice, since justice is so lacking in the 'real world'.

you are too stupid and cowardly to see through your own self-serving 'beliefs'...if you had been born in a muslim country, you'd be spewing islamo-babble instead of christo-babble. i truly hope you are 'saved' from your own cowardly delusions someday.

I don't know, maybe so ,he is no more real than your god. The only thing real is Human-race And we are destroying that in the name of god most of the time. It appears money is god (due to the power it gives)and it is controlled by greedy evil conglomerates .

I visited the two websites listed in the comments here to see the photos. How do they know who's depicted? Neither of those two articles say (Yahoo and huffingtonpost) – they are apparently just taking their word for it.

As I understand it the most important factor that allows archeologists to identify holy art is symbology. The different apostles are shown with different symbols from the stories of their lives. Peter is always depicted with keys, John usually has a lamb, etc. Identify the symbol, and you know which saint is depicted.

It seems kind of funny... if one does not believe in god, "You are going to Hell!" Well, coincidentally, there is no belief in satan either... so then what?

And supposedly one lives a life doing good things for self and others, just zero faith in something being preached by others. What kind of god would want to kick that person out of heaven for that?

They would mean so much more if they were drawings of Christ. He's the cornerstone of Christianity, not the apostles or Mary!

What good is a picture of someone drawn 300 years after they died in the first place? it's still all based on word of mouth and the drawings of others. All this teaches us is the tools and artistic styles of the people of the 4th century.

I can draw you a picture of Thomas Jefferson right now if you like, want one?

The four apostle icons surround an image of Jesus as the good shepherd, the yahoo news article has a lot more detail.

The image of Jesus isn't terribly important here because there are older images of him to be found, I think they go back to around 200ad. On the other hand, these are the earliest images of any of the Apostles.

If people practice what they preached human history would be less bloody and hateful to each other and the world would be a better place. People only talk about religion when it suits them.

Huffington Post has the correct information, but only because they still use AP news feeds. I guess CNN got its wish. They cut the AP so they could set themselves apart from the other news outlets. I guess faulty reporting is one way to seperate yourself from the professionals.

So what makes you think that these are true pic's of the apostles. Just like the "Big Bang" no one really knows the truth.

There's more proof of the Big Bang than there actually is of Jesus Christ is existing.

For example, Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation. The dim light at the microwave wavelength range that statistically could have only been created by an event with the magnitude of something like the Big Bang.

Great, more images provided by the church showing people from the middle east looking like 'white' people. While the Romans where in control of the middle east including Isreal at the time of Christ, the Jews where not 'white' people but had darker shin just like everyone else that was a native of the area. Jesus and the apostles did not look like the Romans or any of the images 'created' by the church. I'm not trying to get anyone worked up here but this is a fact. The person who wrote that the Bible was written by word of mouth over hundreds of years was correct. I have no issue with those who believe. If it makes you a better person then it's a good thing. Just remember how stories passed on by word of mouth get distorted.

Doesn't matter. 400 years after Jesus just says that there was plenty of time to craft a religion out of an incarnated beings works. The only reason Christianity spread was through war and signs and wonders. No one can really state the religion began at the exact moment Jesus decended on Earth.
