Security Brief: What happened at McChrystal, Obama meeting

A source close to Gen. Stanley McChrystal provided the first account of what happened in Wednesday's White House meeting between the general and President Barack Obama.

According to the source, McChrystal briefly explained the magazine article at the center of the controversy and took responsibility, then offered his resignation. Obama accepted the resignation, the source said.

The president "had no intention of keeping him," according to the source.

In addition, the source said McChrystal will not return to Afghanistan. His team will go back to pack up on his behalf.

Well did Americans elect a Commander in Chief? What are his credentials at leadership under fire?
Looks like he just fired one of the guys who can do it.
Was the Rolling Stone writer up front on who he was writing for and did the article get cleared?
If not a serious gap in the General's staff.
Oh yeah can't limit the media? Who governs the propriety of media activity?

We need more men like General McChrystal and less like Obama. Or should I say NOBAMA

For those of you who forget history, it is essential that a President remove those in the military who begin making political-type comments. President Truman delayed far too long in removing the much honored 5 star General of the Armies Douglas MacArthur who while in command of the Korean War engaged in similar sniping and political machinations. Truman recognized his delay in doing so was his greatest single error in office.

I love the people complaining. Tell me another job where you can question your boss in such a high-profile fasion and NOT lose your job? Heck, last week a guy wearing a perogi costume got fired from the Pittsburgh Pirates for questioning the poeple running that team on his Facebook page. You make your disagreement with your boss public, you have to expect to be fired or forced to resign.

This is the most entertaining forum anywhere. Who needs comedy central? I was not aware that "Fox News" viewers actually know how to get on the thing called internet and end up on a CNN website and post a wise ass comment. Is there a reason "they" always pretend to have served in the army, while all they have done, yet, is sit on their bum and watch fox news to improve their general knowledge?

Like this guy or not there is one truth you cant avoid. If you say insulting things about your boss to the mass media, your going to get canned. That should be obvious to anyone.

My understanding is the military leadership is indeed in trouble. This article and dismissal are avoiding the problem instead of addressing it.

Obama continues to trade even though his first trades were all bad trades. He will continue to negotiate himself into oblivion. Some just know how to say "NOBAMA", like the Arizona senator Kyl. If you believe anything happens with Obama that he doesn't try to make some political advantage out it, I have some beachfront property in the Everglades to sell you......

Obama is half the man I thought he was. He never served and yet he dismisses a lifer 4 Star General? He obviously doesn't appreciate what it takes to make a career in the military. He 'walked' into the role. He should have let by gones be by gones, accepted the appoligy and sent the good General back to work. Obama won't get my vote again. Apparently I was wrong by him.

A real 4 stars general will not say something like that on a magazine; not even George Patton will say something like that on FDR. With this kind of general in the battlefield no wonder the U.S. never be able to win a war.

At the same time which Republican president(s) has real military experience other than IKE in recent U.S. history who know how to lead in a war?

The USA should get out of Afghanistan NOW! Obama should not have escalated and continued this occupation of another country, a losing proposition. McChrystal is Dick Cheney's man and Obama should have known better than to employ him in the first place. Good riddance.

Just to clarify, I understand UCMJ Article 88. It is what it is but I also know how the military is as well. To have him resign is riddiculous. Article 15 him, bust him down in rank, take pay away, extra duty or something other then have the man resign. Maybe it was Gen McChrystal's choice to resign but knowing better, I am sure he was asked to resign or advised by friends. Maybe even pressured. He would have never got court martialed. A 4 star General does not become a 4 star General without knowing people. After all, becoming a General is politics.
