World update: Mexico braced for floods as Alex hits

An update from London on some of the international stories we expect to develop on Thursday:

Hurricane Alex - Heavy rains pelting northeastern Mexico left at least one person dead and thousands more in shelters as Hurricane Alex moved inland, Mexican emergency officials say. Read the full story

L’Oreal trial - The 87-year-old heiress to the L'Oreal cosmetics fortune is at the center of a trial starting Thursday in Paris - a case involving secret recordings, butlers, bank accounts, and billions of dollars in assets.

Missing spy suspect - A suspected Russian spy is missing after being arrested in Cyprus and released on bail.  Authorities arrested Robert Christopher Metsos, 55, in Larnaca after an Interpol "red notice" was served on him.  He was released on bail pending further proceedings but was told not to leave the country and was ordered to check in nightly with police. He failed to check in Wednesday, and police are searching for him. Metsos is among 11 suspects in an alleged Russian spy ring in the United States. Read the full story

Van der Sloot indicted - A U.S. federal grand jury has indicted Joran van der Sloot on charges of wire fraud and extortion in connection with a plot to sell information about the whereabouts of Natalee Holloway's remains in exchange for $250,000.

Gaza air strikes - The Israeli air force hit a weapons manufacturing facility and "terror" sites in Gaza overnight, an Israel Defense Forces spokesman says. Read the full story
