Obama praises 'real progress on the ground' in Gaza

[Updated at 1:51 p.m.] President Barack Obama Tuesday commended Israel for easing limits on goods going to Gaza, saying there had been "real progress on the ground" that was happening "more quickly and more effectively than many people anticipated."

Speaking to reporters after talks with visiting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Obama said the United States wanted to "ensure the people of Gaza are able to prosper economically while Israel is able to maintain its legitimate security needs in not allowing missiles and weapons to get to Hamas."

[Updated at 1:37 p.m.] Netanyahu said Tuesday that recent sanctions adopted by United Nations are helping to delegitimize Iran's nuclear program. The sanctions "have teeth" and "bite," he said.

[Updated at 1:36 p.m.] Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Tuesday that reports of damaged relations between his country and the United States "aren't just
premature, they're just flat wrong."

[Posted at 1:30 p.m.] President Barack Obama said Tuesday he is convinced Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu "wants peace" in the Middle East and is "willing to take risks for peace."

The United States will never ask Israel to "take any steps that would undermine (its) security interests," he said.

The relationship between Israel and the United States has improved over the last year, he asserted.

"The bond between the United States and Israel is unbreakable," Obama said.

He made his remarks during a White House meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Good to see this. Israel is our greatest ally. We would do well to keep that alliance.

Notyetyouyahoo wants a protracted interval of "renewed negotiation" that will allow Israel time to expand settlements on stolen land and that will ultimately lead to another round of negotiation so that Israel will have time to expand settlements on stolen land.

Unfortunately, this great "ally" brought with it a plethora of problems that have created many enmities that resulted in wars, deaths, and affected our standing in the world and with our other allies. What did we gain out of our alliance? I honestly cannot think of anything other than supporting the views of religious fanatics that are looking forward to the world's destruction when the Messiah returns (and no I am not talking about Islamic extremists).

And what exactly have we benefited from this great alliance? The Israelis have benefited greatly in that they receive billions in aid from us each year and a veto of any UN Resolution even remotely critical of them but what have we gotten out of this alliance?

Israel certainly comes with baggage, but we are much better off supporting them as an ally then writing them off and breaking ties. If we didn't have Israel as the regional super power then who would be? Iran? That sounds much more dangerous and destabilizing than the status quo.

Israel shares information and technology with the U.S. as if it were one of the states. If you were ever to visit Israel, you would see that our values and ideals are shared and embraced by the Israeli people. Our culture, language, music, fashion, food, pop culture flourishes and this is one of the reasons enemies are out to destroy her. We should continue to support Israel as our sister country. They are truly a freedom and peace-loving country and, once our mutual enemies are destroyed, this will become more evident.

Why do we even need the friendship of Israel? WE, America saved their azzes during the WW2.. We give them roughly 4 BILLION bucks a year, plus weapons, which they Israel, turns around and attacks Palestine with! Seriously, Israel is nothing more than a terrorist state. America needs to end their friendship NOW!! Stop ALL foreign aid, not just to Israel, but ALL countries.
America's friendship with Israel is the main problem that peace between America and the Arab world will never come to fruition! We need to get out of bed with Israel. Let them fend for themselves!

Justin, I am glad to see you are a supporter. It pains me to see some of the comments on here. They are circa 1939 in Nazi Germany. Israel shares the same beliefs that the USA does. It is funny that when you say that this is "Good to see," you get responses like "you are stupid." Then they follow that up with some propoganda that isn't remotely true. You always hear people saying, "what have the Israeli's ever done for the USA?" Here are some things: only democracy in the middle east, Israel is the largest investor of american comanies, invented the first test for breast cancer, designed the first ingestible camera in the form of a pill, invented the cell phone, voicemail, and text messaging, windows operating system was created by Microsoft-Israel, the intel pentium chip was invented by Intel-Israel, aol instant messenger, most nopel peace prizes per capita, invented nanowire and usb flash drive, and they have invented too many medicines to even name. So, all of you people who ask what the USA has done for the world, you should be asking what their enemies have done for the world. All their enemies spend money to wipe them off the earth, yet they just defend themselves and continue to better the world through innovation. Oh, and they have only been a modern state for 62 years, yet they have the most successful economy in the world in that time. It seems to me that all of you are just haters and don't like the fact that Israel is successful. If you still believe that Israel is somehow bad for the USA and the world, then I advise you to go to Israel, and then go to all the surrounding countries. You then make the decision for yourself which one you would rather stay in. Oh, and Israel was the second country in history to have a female prime minister. Women can't even have basic rights in most surrounding countries. I hope that most of you are from the middle east and just hate Israel and can't get past that, but if you guys that hate are from the USA, then I feel really bad for the future of our country.

Judaism began more than 2,000 years BEFORE Islam even began. The Jews were in the land of Israel for more than 2,000 years BEFORE the Muslims. We Christians (over 2 billion) strongly support the Jews living in their homeland and defending the birthplace of Christ from the racist Arabs.

I don't belive a thing that goes from moulth of Netanyahu...If he's willing to commit for peace he shoul freeze forever those settlements building in PALESTINIAN teritory! And he won't stop! The israeli politicians that are in top of country right now are not exactly peace providers. They wanna create a jewish state composed only of jews...and that is IMPOSSIBLE! They CANNOT IGNORE ARAB -ISRAELI population. They gotta have same rights as any israeli citizens! In the day that I see that in Israel it will be the day I will belive in Israel's good intentions!

Morena – Israeli Arabs actually do have the same rights as any Israeli citizen, even though they are exempt from serving in their armed forces as everybody else does (with the exception of people studying to be priests and rabbis). Israel is a democratic country and would not expel any of its citizens, even if another Palestinian state is ever created. The arabs on the other hand want to expel all of the Jews from any territory that would be transferred.

Not having your facts correct and using CAPS unnecessarily makes you look less intelligent and your arguments that less important to listen to

@Phil, if you include the residents of Gaza and the West Bank as Arab-Israelis, then how can they have equal rights if the Palestinian home in West Bank are being bulldozed to make homes for Jewish Israelis, meanwhile building materials are prohibited from the hands of Palestinians? If Israel does not want to be pushed out of their spiritual homeland, they should stop trying to push the Arabs out of theirs.

The Arab-Israelis that live in Gaza and the West Bank have rejected their citizenship and all of the rights included within. They reside on land that once belonged to Egypt and Jordan, yet were lost in battle and taken over by Israel, only to be given back. This was rejected by the Arab countries who obviously don't care enough for their would-be citizens. Therefore, we are creating the pseudo-state of Palestine which theoretically already exits as Israel and Jordan [Israel is the Jewish part and Jordan the Arab :-)] This creation of a Palestinian is destined for failure because it is being established on a false premise for people who only exist to create conflict. You will soon realize that the war Palestinians are fighting is not for sovereignty or equal rights, but rather for the absolute rule of Islamic law over the lands of the Middle East. They are not owed any land as some land is now legally Israel and some was forfeited by the neighboring countries. Enough of the BS people!!!

If Israel does not get along with any of their neighbors so it is hard to believe the sympathize that they are protecting themselves further more their recent moves, further prove they are unable to be a peaceful civilization. Please supplement the information that Israel has never sold USA technology, there are several articles that verify they have. I am sorry I do not buy into the Israel being the victim fortunately; I do not work in the media so I will not loose my job over telling the truth about Israel. It is indeed good to see this but I think Israel has to truly reach out by stopping the settlements and treating the Palistinians with dignity. It's that simple. There are as many Israeli extremists to balance those on the other side but we have to move forward and help the people of Gaza and Palistine. Now is the best time. Now is always the best time.
