Obama praises 'real progress on the ground' in Gaza

[Updated at 1:51 p.m.] President Barack Obama Tuesday commended Israel for easing limits on goods going to Gaza, saying there had been "real progress on the ground" that was happening "more quickly and more effectively than many people anticipated."

Speaking to reporters after talks with visiting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Obama said the United States wanted to "ensure the people of Gaza are able to prosper economically while Israel is able to maintain its legitimate security needs in not allowing missiles and weapons to get to Hamas."

[Updated at 1:37 p.m.] Netanyahu said Tuesday that recent sanctions adopted by United Nations are helping to delegitimize Iran's nuclear program. The sanctions "have teeth" and "bite," he said.

[Updated at 1:36 p.m.] Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Tuesday that reports of damaged relations between his country and the United States "aren't just
premature, they're just flat wrong."

[Posted at 1:30 p.m.] President Barack Obama said Tuesday he is convinced Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu "wants peace" in the Middle East and is "willing to take risks for peace."

The United States will never ask Israel to "take any steps that would undermine (its) security interests," he said.

The relationship between Israel and the United States has improved over the last year, he asserted.

"The bond between the United States and Israel is unbreakable," Obama said.

He made his remarks during a White House meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Remember Declaration of Independence: ...that all Men are created equal.... Obama: ..peace to ensure security os Israel.... Peace should be for all. If anything, Palestinians/Gazans are those suffering more. The cards to play are more on Israel (and US). It's time for Netanyahu to do much more, than just talks, excuses as in the past, making one step while requiring other sides to make 100 steps.

Wow. Obama actually let a photographer in the room and didn't send Benji out the back door in order not to offend Muslims. Maybe this is a little progress. Doubt it. This is a photo op to get out the Jewish vote.

The Jews were in the land of Israel for more than 2,000 years BEFORE the Muslims. We Christians (over 2 billion) strongly support the Jews living in their homeland and defending the birthplace of Christ from the racist Arabs.

The only solution for a lasting piece is absolute democratic process (that we Americans cherish so passionately) for the entire territory in question, otherwise, the peace will not last. All people who lived there without regard to religion, race, etc. should vote on how they would like their one country to be run. I favor one state solution because two states would only attempt to “legalize” Israel’s occupation that will be remembered in history until it is corrected by another large scale conflict, so no lasting peace will result.

A fair absolute democratic process would obviously exclude all manipulated Jewish people who the Zionist regime illegally imported for decades to increase the Jewish population from around 100,000 to over 5 Million since the start of the occupation. This is obviously an attempt to unjustly manipulate any future democratic process by increasing the occupier’s population at the expense of others. Any agreement or compromise other than the absolute democratic process will be temporary with a terrible conflict looming to correct it in the future.

Jason, your ignorance is showing. Arabs vote in Israel, and they run for government. Try learning about a subject before you respond and you won't make a fool of yourself again.

I think Obama meant that Netanyahu wants "piece" like a another piece of Palestinian lands.
All the nice words won't mean anything if Israel doesn't stop demolishing Palestinian homes, destroying Palestinian farms, and expanding settlements on Palestinian lands All the nice words can't hide the reality any longer.

Israels wants Judea and Samaria and will never give them as long as AIPAC has such sway over the American foreign Policy. Israel will definitely start the 3rd world war.

Prez Obla Bla's recent directive to head of NASA to share insights & information with Muslims proves our president is a muslim .. In the case of Israel, that tiny little country is the only deterrant we have against blood thirsty Iran over there. Obla Bla will be a one term prez because we middle class now know for sure who and what he is .. His mission is to crush the Middle Class, elevate the minorities and illegal aliens to garner votes for his socialist mission. Undeniably he is the Manchurian President.

Even Obama cannot be that stupid. Until Israel returns to their 1967 borders and recognizes the fairly elected government of Hamas there will never be any piece. America needs to stop supporting Israeli hooliganism, settlement building and wall building. Didn't Hitler build walls around the Warsaw ghetto during WWII??? Don't the Israelis get the irony of this.
