Source: Justice Department to challenge Arizona immigration law

The Justice Department is expected to file a legal challenge Tuesday against Arizona's controversial immigration law, according to an administration official.

During a recent interview with CNN's John King, Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer said that, if the Obama Justice Department winds up suing her state over the law, she'll go to court.

Administration officials have indicated the question of Arizona usurping federal authority to control the border and enforce immigration law is the most likely federal point of attack against the state law signed by Gov. Jan Brewer earlier this year.

This story is developing. We'll bring you the latest information as we get it.

You do know how to actually type in a single comment box right? Or is that beyond your grasp along with reality?

First, disagreeing with this Bill does not mean a person is anti immigration control. It just means we don't agree with this. Second, we are all adults so let's try to act like it. If you can't handle friendly debate without berating someone maybe this forum isn't for you.

Here is why I disagree with the bill. I think it is just a ploy for future votes for Jan Brewer. it isn't going to fix the immigration problem at all. We need to close off the border and then deal with the problem we have. This bill is putting the cart before the horse. It reminds me of wack-a-mole. We get one person and then 10 more pop up. It's reactionary.

Also, the bull may not have been written to racially profile Hispanics but that's what this will turn into. There will be a second and third order effect. Police are allowed to stop over crowded vehicles; that's a form of profiling.

My last point is, I fear this will put an unnecessary strain on the local law enforcement. Law enforcement officials will be forced to neglect other areas of their job to enforce the bill. This will effect the safety of everyone. There will most certainly need to be a measure of effectiveness so that will be one more quota police officers will have to fill.

So Mary, A few points. Do you think that O's stand on this has nothing to do with a future voting block? It most certainly does! Independants are flowing away from him like the oil is gushing in the Gulf.

Overcrowded vehicles is unsafe, and it is not profiling to stop them.

Maybe the cost will be higher at first, but it will eventually become much better as this will be a deterrent to illegals! There will be less crime, less trials at our expense, less imprisonments at our expense, and the police will be able to do their jobs to protect the citizens.

I sincerely hope that Jan Brewer DOES get reelected! God Bless her. Wish Massachusetts had a good law, Rhode Island does, and where do you suppose they will go? Right next door! Terrific.

By the way, Mary, I do absolutely agree that we should seal the border. Jan Brewer has asked for help with this and the response was as effective as trying to wipe up the Pacific with a paper towel. She had to do something. I am so glad she has put this on the table. I think she is brave to do so. Obama will never seal the border!

    Heresme,

Of course Obama is trying to effect future voting because God forbid a politician do anything that would help the US! Like I said the cost aside, it is not going to help your problem at all. The state is saturated. One person on another CNN story brought up going after businesses who hire illegals. That would most definitely stop the problem.

What are the reasons they come over? Jobs (money), health care and other benefits. if you stop these things it would help fix the problem and would be a lot more cost effective. If there are no jobs those looking for work would not come, if they don't have access to medical aid and welfare then they are less likely to come over. These are more intelligent solutions in my opinion.

The United Staes of America was a Country that proded itslef on fair and just Laws. However, the Leaderhip of this country have been bought and has been facilitating the replacement of qualified American Workers. Then there is som much misinformation, it makes me fell like I am going to throw up. First Illegals should just go back to their native country.
Actually, the cosat of lettuce, may not go up as much as you think. The reason is Illegals pay little or no taxes, illegals get free medical care (Americans pay for their care), the costs of crime, and the costs of education. Any Amnesty is an Act of WAR against the American people! A majority of Americans SUPPORT Arizona. Illegals, PLEASE LEave NOW!

Go Arizona. Let this great country get back leaders that were the God-fearing men and women like the founding fathers and their families. For years this is about offending anybody. Let Christians stand up and say we are offended for giving our country away that belongs to our children and grandchildren, don't give it to Muslims and Mexicans.

  10. Strike Down the Arizona law!

With the Justice Department doing the right thing to challenge the Arizona law, the U.S. Supreme Court can only rule in the Justice Department's favor. To do otherwise is to set a very dangerous precedent for all the other states to follow which would be to give them unequivocal authority to usurp Federal law and take the place of the Federal government in matters which clearly are not under their purview or jurisdiction thus, the dangerous Arizona law must be struck down!
