Police: Shooter kills self, two others in workplace attack

Police respond to a workplace shooting in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on Monday.

[Updated at 5:44 p.m., July 12] Three people - not six, as police initially said - are dead after Monday's shooting at a business in Albuquerque, according to Police Chief Ray Schultz.

The three dead include the shooter, who turned a gun on himself, according to police.

[Updated at 2:58 p.m., July 12] A former employee shot and killed five people at a business Monday in Albuquerque before turning the gun on herself, New Mexico authorities said.

Police said officers responded to a 911 call at 9:26 a.m. (11:26 a.m. ET) that multiple shots had been fired. When officers entered the building, they found a total of 10 people shot: four were dead, including a man believed to be the shooter, officials said. CNN mistakenly reported earlier that the shooter was believed to be a woman.

Two people have died as a result of gunshot wounds, two are in stable condition, and two others are receiving emergency medical attention, police said.

"We believe this incident to be a domestic-violence workplace situation," Albuquerque Police Chief Ray Schultz said.

One of the victims, Schultz said, is believed to be the wife or girlfriend of the shooter, who was a current employee at Emcore Coporation.

According to CNN affiliate KRQE, police said the shooter had been involved in a past domestic violence incident.

MG Arizona- That is why so many people are killed in situations like this. They are not allowed to carry guns for self defense. Mass killings ONLY happen in places where you are not allowed to carry a gun for self defense. That is why they are referred to as "Criminal Empowerment Zones".

Well even if you carry a gun wont guarantee you will be saved if you fail to shoot before your enemy so whats the point of carrying it anyway?

Reality – What you're proposing is really just a variant of Cold War thinking, ie mutually assured destruction. If everyone is packing heat, then it's the ultimate deterrent against crime... until somebody accidentally pulls a trigger and everyone goes down in a heap of bullets.

Then why do cops carry guns, they may get shot first. Why do we have a military, we may get attacked first? As soon as a nutjob enters a place and begins shooting, a defensive posture behind a solid object can stop an attackers. Ruby's diner proved that one. The guy shot the place up until the police fired one round. The shooter in Vermont dropped his gun as soon as two students retrieved theirs from their cars. etc. etc.

I agree. Gun culture is a disease that feeds on itself. Anyone can get infected in this country, as the guns will always be out there in the hands of the bad guy, and the only antidote that continues to be approved for use is, guess what?, more guns.

Reality? Who's reality? You want reality about mass killings. Try this on for size. Mass killings are always perpetrated by someone possesing a gun and using it/them on multiple people. The more guns people possess, the more incidents like this occur. Your a loon if you can't grasp the simplicity of that fact.

lol, mass killings only happens at places where you can't carry guns. What about the muslim soldier who shot all the military personel right there on the miltary base? I agree that you should have the right to own guns, but please stop thinking you are rambo and can "take someone out" before they get you. If everyone was armed at the work place and someone came up behind you and shot you in the head then they would have two guns to continue the rampage. I don't believe in gun control, but get real, guns don't EVER prevent violence. Even on military bases where there are more guns then will ever be in the civilian sector.

John Lott in his book proved without a doubt that more guns in the hands of honest citizens saves lives and stops crime. He broke it down to every county in the U.S. He dared anyone to prove his findings wrong. NO ONE HAS. Airports and places like that are safer due to the 24 hour presence of honest citizens with guns. If you want to ban guns then you support the raping of unarmend women by larger men, and other similar crimes. Sorry, the world is a nasty place at times, good people need to defend themselves against it. I do, and will continue to do so, despite your wishes.

MG, if I shoot at him I'm going to hit him.
"Gun Free Zones" are only gun free to law abiding citizens. Criminals with guns prefer gun free zones because they know they have no resistance. I guarantee that I feel safer than you do shopping, eating out, or just walking down the street, than you do because I do carry a gun. I am much more aware of my surroundings and will apply self defense tactics if and when they are needed. If you just want to give up your wallet and/or your life to some petty criminal so be it. I feel for your wife and children though.

Yes, you have it right... the facilities you mentioned do possess the higher risks as they are "NO CARRY ZONES" and this is why you will find full time law enforcement in most of these places. Unfortunately, most US post offices do not have armed guards... they are also NO CARRY ZONES because they are a federal building. Those establishment that you see the "NO WEAPONS ALLOWED" signs on the front door, example: Mel's Diner perhaps, the only thing they could get you on is tresspassing. I choose to eat or do business at places without this sign that informs the criminals that there is no one inside prepared to defend the place.

Butcher knives, alcohol, motor vehicles, falling debris, airplanes, AIDS.... ALL these and more are tools used to KILL people. Many more so than firearms. You need to go live in England or Canada or France or any other place where private ownership of firearms are banned or highly restricted and have been for DECADES... Oh wait, Germany walked across Europe in the 30's because no one had the power to stop them because all the private guns were taken away... Remind me please when the last time it happened here that foreign troops walked across the continental US??? I cant seem to remember...

These locations to some extent have both a screening for weapons and immediate on-site counter-force.

Airports, however, outside the TSA sterile area, are not always gun free zones. In Pennsylvania, for example, it is legal to carry openly without a permit, and concealed with one.

People who do this are generally crazy. There's no way to avoid having some crazies in the world. It's sad, but life has occasional tragedies. Incidentally the worst mass shooting of all time was perpetrated by a South Korean policeman in the early 1980s. He killed something like 50+ people. There's no way to avoid some risk; at least in the US the good guy shoot a crook every now and again, including guys that try to shoot up public spaces.

The best defense is a good offense. I've been a cop for 20 years. Rarely do we get there while the crime is in progress. For that reason, everyone should be required to carry a firearm. That way when someone loses their mind, 20 people will be firing back.

Booze too? you know people get drunk and can't be accountable for their crimes. The bad guys will always have guns, drugs, etc. You can ban all you want it will only hurt the law abiding "good" citizens who do things legally. How are the good guys going to protect themselves when the bad guys come? throw rocks?

comparing any other inanimate object like a car, a plane, a frisbee, to a gun is an idiotic position for anyone to take. Guns ARE weapons, used solely for propelling a destructive projectile. It is like comparing oranges to apples. If that is the best argument people can come up with, that is your best logic, I pray you do not own a gun.

Im conservative and am for gun rights. If more people carried or owned guns then maybe they could defend themselves from mentally ill individuals who use guns towards the detriment of society.

The gun is a " tool" that allows people to kill each other with the slightest movement of a finger. They can be easily concealed and require very little skill to use. No other weapon takes less effort to kill someone with than a gun. It does a great disservice to refer to a gun as a "tool".

Keith – Have you ever shot a gun. It is not as simple as aiming a pulling the trigger to hit a target. Sure if something is only 5-10 feet it's pretty hard to miss, but if it's 20-30 yards plus, it takes a pretty good shot, especially with a hand gun.

      July 12, 2010 at 2:32 pm | Report abuse |

Keith: You say it isn't hard to kill someone with a gun. "all it takes is a little squeeze of a trigger"

It takes training to be accurate with a pistol. you have to control your adrenalin, know how to use the sights properly and then when all said and done know how to squeeze the trigger to so that you don't pull of target, not to mention not limp wrist the recoil and jam the pistol.

Just think you should try shooting a gun before you comment about how "easy" it is.

I was in the Army for 4 years. I have shot many weapons, before, during, and since being in. It is extremely easy to shoot someone at close range, which is how this incident occurred. I am not for doing away with the second amendment, I believe people have a right to defend themselves. I am simply against the BS arguments that gun nuts seem to throw about to try and prove their point. "What if they had a knife, would you be for banning sharp objects." You can fight back against a knife. You can't fight back against a gun.

James and Ryan, you are both missing the point. It is VERY easy to kill with a gun. It may not be so easy to hit the person you are aiming at, but that doesn't mean you won't hit someone else and kill them.
