Police: Shooter kills self, two others in workplace attack

Police respond to a workplace shooting in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on Monday.

[Updated at 5:44 p.m., July 12] Three people - not six, as police initially said - are dead after Monday's shooting at a business in Albuquerque, according to Police Chief Ray Schultz.

The three dead include the shooter, who turned a gun on himself, according to police.

[Updated at 2:58 p.m., July 12] A former employee shot and killed five people at a business Monday in Albuquerque before turning the gun on herself, New Mexico authorities said.

Police said officers responded to a 911 call at 9:26 a.m. (11:26 a.m. ET) that multiple shots had been fired. When officers entered the building, they found a total of 10 people shot: four were dead, including a man believed to be the shooter, officials said. CNN mistakenly reported earlier that the shooter was believed to be a woman.

Two people have died as a result of gunshot wounds, two are in stable condition, and two others are receiving emergency medical attention, police said.

"We believe this incident to be a domestic-violence workplace situation," Albuquerque Police Chief Ray Schultz said.

One of the victims, Schultz said, is believed to be the wife or girlfriend of the shooter, who was a current employee at Emcore Coporation.

According to CNN affiliate KRQE, police said the shooter had been involved in a past domestic violence incident.

I think every law-abidiing citizen should have a permit to carry a weapon and should keep it strapped on them at all times. The day is fast approaching when the only way to ensure the safety of you and your loved ones is to fight fire with fire. Think about it – if everyone in that place of employment were licensed and armed when the shooter walked in, how many do you think he would have been able to kill or injure before someone took him out?

      Isn't one dead person enough?

Plus, your logic is flawed. Suppose everyone with a gun started shooting out of panic not knowing who the original shooter was. How many would have been killed then?

Now suppose no one had a gun anywhere, how many people would be killed by a gun? Zero. But then again, you ignorant people probably think that God's name is Smith, and he sent his Son Wesson to save the earth. Everybody knows that the Bible says carry a gun and use it if you have to. Jesus did right? I mean look at how many people he killed while he was on earth.

I know! Instead of outlawing guns, let's outlaw stupidity and aggression!

One would work just as well as the other–not at all.

There is a really nasty trend of this domestic violence going into the workplace. I don't understand why people must kill and injure innocent people, because of a domestic dispute. People are getting really weird.

MG, while I applaud your desires for peace, your pollyanna view of the world collides violently with reality. And, btw, what in the world is a "civilian country?" Do you even know what a civilian is? Gaffes and silly statements like this really derail any credibility for your views.

Wow, kind of unusual it's a woman shooter. Regardless of that though, it's another senseless killing spree by a nut with a gun. BTW it's not the gun that killed these people, IT'S THE PERSON BEHIND THE GUN!

so mg, how do you propose that we keep people from carryng guns?
the same way we keep people from drinking and driving?
or maybe the way we keep people from selling and buying drugs?

I think guns should be easy to come by, because then people will drive more carefully, because they then know what will happen if they cut you off or want to take your parking space.
Problem with gun rules now in my State is you need to go home to get your gun, so you get too much time to cool down and let the offender get away.
