Eight U.S. troops killed in Afghanistan; blasts kill civilians

At least eight American soldiers have been killed Tuesday and Wednesday in Afghanistan, the NATO-led command said.

Also, explosions in Afghanistan killed 11 civilians Tuesday, Afghanistan's Interior Ministry said Wednesday.

A bomb struck a minibus in the Helmand district of Marja and killed nine civilians, the ministry said, and two people died in an explosion in the Yousuf Khil district of Paktia province.

Tropical storm deadly in Philippines

Eighteen people were killed and 57 others are missing as Tropical Storm
Conson moved over the Philippines, the country's National Disaster Coordinating
Council reported Wednesday.

The Philippine National Disaster Coordinating Council issued warnings about flash floods, landslides and big waves, even as the storm was downgraded from a typhoon.

The council said it knew of 19 missing fishermen, but the weather and choppy seas precluded officials from mounting search and rescue operations. Emergency responders were on alert, the council said.

World update: Argentina votes on gay marriage

Gay marriage - The Argentine Senate votes Wednesday on a gay marriage bill that has already passed the lower chamber of Congress. The bill would give gay couples equal marriage rights, including the ability to adopt children. Read the full story

Yemen attacks - Two security officials were killed and two wounded when gunmen launched coordinated attacks on separate security buildings in southern Yemen on Wednesday, the ruling party Mu'tamar's website said. The attacks took place in the Abyan province as security forces were queuing up for morning marches, local officials told CNN.

Texas mayor, daughter found shot to death at home

The mayor of Coppell, Texas, and her daughter were found dead in their home with gunshot wounds to the head, officials in the suburban Dallas city said Tuesday.

Plane crash in northern Michigan kills 4
