U.S. sends carrier to South Korea

The aircraft carrier USS George Washington

The United States is sending the aircraft carrier USS George Washington to South Korea this week in a display of "the strength of our alliance and our constant readiness to defend the Republic of Korea," the ship's commander said Monday.

The visit comes after months of heightened tensions on the Korean peninsula after the sinking of a South Korean warship in a torpedo attack in March. A multinational inquiry found North Korea responsible for the attack on the corvette Cheonan, in which 46 South Korean sailors were killed. North Korea has denied any connection with the attack and said it is the victim of an international conspiracy.

Earlier this month, the United Nations formally denounced the sinking of the Cheonan, but did not specifically mention North Korea.

In anticipation of the U.S. announcement, Pyongyang at the weekend said the presence of the carrier would be a "reckless provocation," according to the state-run Korean Central News Agency. It said the U.S. and South Korea were trying to save face after suffering a "diplomatic defeat" in the United Nations.

Two U.S. destroyers will also join the George Washington for its call in the port of Busan. A third destroyer will visit Chinhae, U.S. Forces Korea said. The four-day port call begins Wednesday.

"The U.S. Navy maintains a robust forward presence in the Asia-Pacific region and the people of the Republic of Korea are our good friends and allies," George Washington commanding officer Capt. David Lausman said in a statement Monday.

The 97,000-ton George Washington, based in Yokosuka, Japan, is the only U.S. carrier whose home port is outside the United States.

North Korea would not be phased by this they will jump up and down, but in the end of the day they have nukes. Which guarantees they won't get attacked as long as they don't attack.
Why do you think everyone wants one? It guarantees a country they won't get attacked by the the US.

I wonder how much this is going to cost the S Koreans, some people outta there actually think the US is doing Justice, its all business for the americans. what S Korea has to offer to the US, nothing accept money paying for the US convoys, korean women for the soldiers and a spying location to China

Great, alot of debate over where people think are subs are at and name calling, but folks, the reality is, North Korea is not going to do anything, they have already backed away from further threats and are now wanting to return to nuclear talks and we did what we rightfully should have, we told them no further discussions or aid at this time. Let them starve for a few more years and then the people of North Korea will be willing to take a stand against the little troll doll.

I love South Korea 🙂 That country rocks. Seriously. Unfortunately, if you don't speak Korean it's kind of a hassle. I was fortunate enough to have a friend fluent in Korean and it made my trip there so much fun. Being a "foreigner" was actually kind of exciting. Walking down the streets of Seoul and little kids saying hello to you in English and laughing when you say Hi back to them. It's a great place. Truly is. Great food, kind people, and lots of fun stuff to do.

I like S Koreans also. They beat Mao Tse Tung successors run Communist Red China in winter olympics in Canada 13 medals to 11 (6 S Korean golds to 5 MTTCRChina's). They are tough- they gave MTTCRChina a tough fight in 2008 summer olympics. All this despite having only 5% of MTTCRChina's population.

If we really want to shake up N. Korea we should tell our fleet or nuclear boomers to surface and pop up all around N. Korea.

Reak havoc and unleash the dogs of war with North Korea. North Korea needs to put up or shut up. The Korean penninsula has been at a stalemate for nearly 60 years. Perhaps one day there will be a unified Korea. This should be named Operation Paul Bunyan II.

Most of the comments here seem to be from idiots. N.Korea isn't Iraq or Afganistan. N. Korea won't be standing alone should this escalate into a conflict. The US military haven't exactly walked through Iraq or Afganaistan which have no modern weapons, not to mention that a conflict with N.Korea would strech our military even more. I know that most Americans are desperate to have a few heroes again but it won't happen in N. Korea.

SIgh why does America have to be involved in this.. they will defiantly be no war against these two countries.
And the reason why this war won't happen is because America doesn't have the support of the two strongest countries which is Russia and china. American can say as much crap they want but at the end it just talk no walk.

South Koreans think Kim Jong Ill is a joke. Western media, CNN especially, exaggerates the situation.
