U.S. sends carrier to South Korea

The aircraft carrier USS George Washington

The United States is sending the aircraft carrier USS George Washington to South Korea this week in a display of "the strength of our alliance and our constant readiness to defend the Republic of Korea," the ship's commander said Monday.

The visit comes after months of heightened tensions on the Korean peninsula after the sinking of a South Korean warship in a torpedo attack in March. A multinational inquiry found North Korea responsible for the attack on the corvette Cheonan, in which 46 South Korean sailors were killed. North Korea has denied any connection with the attack and said it is the victim of an international conspiracy.

Earlier this month, the United Nations formally denounced the sinking of the Cheonan, but did not specifically mention North Korea.

In anticipation of the U.S. announcement, Pyongyang at the weekend said the presence of the carrier would be a "reckless provocation," according to the state-run Korean Central News Agency. It said the U.S. and South Korea were trying to save face after suffering a "diplomatic defeat" in the United Nations.

Two U.S. destroyers will also join the George Washington for its call in the port of Busan. A third destroyer will visit Chinhae, U.S. Forces Korea said. The four-day port call begins Wednesday.

"The U.S. Navy maintains a robust forward presence in the Asia-Pacific region and the people of the Republic of Korea are our good friends and allies," George Washington commanding officer Capt. David Lausman said in a statement Monday.

The 97,000-ton George Washington, based in Yokosuka, Japan, is the only U.S. carrier whose home port is outside the United States.

Could someone send these guys some Viagra so they get another hobby. This one is expensive, annoying, and pathetically-transparent in its desire to engage North Korea for yet another exercise in war-profiteering by Lockheed Martin.

      I have a bunch I don't use any more.
At first I thought I had a problem Viagra would solve.

But then I realized my "problem" was an endowment issue, so they can have the rest of the bottle.

Yes, because the only reason why we faught in korea was because weapons contractors where able to make a quick buck, Look im sick of this anti america bull crap, wiki lockheed martin before you clam that they would profit from a war with north korea.

This is simply a show of force intended to give the impression that the USN still has forces ready to fight for korea.

@ Deathgrip, you state "This is simply a show of force intended to give the impression that the USN still has forces ready to fight for korea."
If you are correct then the US is putting alot of lives at risk just to make an impression and in that respect i take issue!

I was stationed in Korea (8th US Army) 50 years ago on taxpayer dollars. Here it is 2010 and we're still spending taxpayer dollars in Korea. When will this nonsense all end? Why can't the south Koreans defend themselves? They've had 50 years to prepare themselves and they still rely on US aid. If south Korea can't or won't spend their money to defend themselves, why should the US do it for them? Why does the US have to be the police for the world? Isn't this why we have the United Nations...or are they merely paper tigers...useless at best.

They can if you understood anything about global warfare, we like the fact we have bases there because we can stretch our policies in other regions across the world. I bet you don't know nothing about logistics... or strategy in military command? And plus they are allies, we work together. Good Grief do some studying.

Do a little research into the South Korean army, they actually spend quite a bit of money on it. US troops are still stationed in Sout Korea because North Korea has refused to negotiate a permanent peace treaty that would officially end a war that was started by the NORTH KOREANS.

Well maybe the UN is tiring of an aggressive America invading countries to spread Democracy, kinda like the Soviets did promoting Communism and waging war on smaller, helpless countries.

Why can't the US just return to Isolationism. In my opinion the US is just a School bully who thinks it can tell everyone else what to do. US, this isn't your war, this matter doesn't need your supervision. They'll always be tension between the Korea's with US input or not.

Would love to, but we have something called a treaty to uphold with S. Korea. We may not do things the best we can, but we at least have honor; something the rest of the world and I assume you seems to be lacking this day in age

It takes a warrior not to want a war. However that is what we train for. Keep in mind that taking a pot shot at a US Carrier is an act of war. We go about our day traveling from here to there showing that the US has an interest in the area. We are free to make port calls in any country in the world that will allow us to. If SK agrees to our making port then NK has no leg to stand on as long as we don't trespass in their waters. That is freedom of navigation. They come out into international waters and stay clear of SK waters.

    Be safe shipmates.

If N. Korea really doesnt want any more conflict, they wont do anything. The carrior will visit, and that will be it. Provoction or not, N. Korea has the choice to eather stay silent or start it again. Now From the report it seems like to me N. K. eather has some corruption going one witch is highly likely in a 3rd world country, or they really do want to start something and are hoping that china will back them up if they claim to be inoccent. One sided views wont get anyone anywhere. Now here is the facts. A S. Korean ship was sunk by a sub and people died as a result. The fact is it is ILLIGAL to kill people anywhere in any nation at any time and to do such especially with a war sub is a deffinat act of war. If you kill people, you can always expect retaliation. Plus, how would it look for us as allies with S. Korea dispite a bad war to abandon them to the mercy of a nearly Communistic China and a extremist like N. Korea. What would be the greater blot on history, to abandon, or to stand by your allies. Unity is key, not Isolationism.
