IMF cancels Haiti's $268 million debt

The executive board of the International Monetary Fund approved Wednesday the cancellation of Haiti's $268 million debt to the fund.

The board also approved a three-year request by authorities to support Haiti's reconstruction and growth program.

The decisions are part of an effort to support Haiti's longer-term reconstruction plans after the January 12 earthquake, which killed more than 200,000 people and destroyed much of the country's infrastructure.

The Haitian lifestyle is doomed for failure. They can turn things around by adopting a planned parenting policy even more strict than China's. Next, become a secular state.. like France but go further – ban religion not just burqas. Any objections?

More like irrational1977. Are you really that callous that you don't recognize the enormity of human suffering in Haiti? How important is it to pay back a debt when people are STILL dying from inadequate medical care and malnutrition? Go back to the hole you climbed out of.

I guess irrational1977 was the right nomer for you since you took an already indefensible, heartless comment and tried to back it up with an equally illogical string of insults. Really? They should first stop multiplying and then become athiests? Brilliant. Then where would you sling your hateful comments? These people desperately need a break so they can get their lives back on track. Haiti was making huge strides in building their economy, ridding themselves of corrupt leaders and improving the average standard of living before the eathquake hit. And last I check earthquakes are natural disasters and NOT brought on by a legacy of corrupt government, high birthrates or believing in God.

So why do you care if Haiti's debt is forgiven the money belongs to the debtor and they can release it if they want. It is not US taxpayer money so you cannot cry about that..but greedy people like you expect them to payback that loan which is mere pennies compared to what we owe and that is B4 Obama took over..get a life and while you are at it get a soul. You Republicans do not even try and hide your Racist ideology..Hiati was the 1st free country that was enslaved and ur still mad about it..lol

you're an idiot! its part of fiscal policy...ever heard of the marshall plan? yeah...we have billions in the 1940s to germany...the bad side of WW2. at times, debt forgiveness is appropriate in order to curb further "incompetence" as you call it. not to mention that the disparity in world bargaining power makes it nearly impossible for countries like haiti to get out from under their debts.

read up on haiti's history to understand why they are in such dire straits, it's not like it's the citizen's faults, they were forced into it.

Forced into it? Are you kidding me? People that were born in Haiti during our lifetime were forced into anything. Most of the people there choose to have several children irresponsibly & live on the priveledge of international monetary assistance without attempting to have a job. And now my hard-earned money is paying for them to potentially live in the lap of luxury while it's squandered away. Must be nice!

Smoke and mirrors . Proof right here that all currencies are based on nothing, debt can be increased or decreased at the stroke on a keyboard. The international bankers are a loan sharking criminal organization that should be brought before a legitimate world court for crimes against humanity.

What's the point? They will just be in debt up to their eye balls again in a few years. Put them out of their suffering and start wiping these nations off the face of the earth and start over.

Waaah. So some of you had a bad year and you want your debt cancelled too. Did you watch your children get crushed under the weight of your house falling on them? Did you suddenly find yourself an orphan because you mother, father, and siblings were all killed? Did you have to watch your loved ones die because they couldn't get help in time? Did you survive a natural disaster only to die slowly because you couldn't get antibiotics to help heal your injuries or the surgery to remove a rotting, crushed limb? Did you writhe in agony after a bout of E.Coli poisoning that you caught from drinking water contaninated with human waste after underground pipes burst? Did you lose your job because the factory that you worked in for the last 10 years has been reduced to nothing but rubble and now you stand wondering how you will feed your family? You people need to stop and really think about how much the Haitians have and continue to suffer, and stop drawing such pathetic paralells to your own cushy lives. And you sould be thankful that you are fortunate enough to live in a country where you are unlikely to EVER experience such misery. And for God sakes, stop suggesting that somehow they deserved what has happened to them!

Stan, You're the only one making this into something racial. To answer your question: Yes, people were outraged when Greece claimed 'bankruptcy' and asked for assistance. Don't know where all of your racist hate is coming from, but if you're like this in public then I can see why people (especially those of the race that you loath so much) may not want to be friends with you.
