Serial killer in Philippines targets expats, their gadgets

Police in Philippines are on the hunt for a “gadget-obsessed” man suspected of murdering three foreigners in separate attacks in the northern city of Angeles.

The victims - an American, a Canadian and a Briton - were among nine alleged victims of 28-year-old Mark Dizon, The Philippine Star newspaper reported Monday.

"We are launching a massive manhunt against Dizon," the city police chief told ABS-CBN news station.

Dizon, a computer technician and reflexologist, is suspected of killing retired U.S. Air Force serviceman Albert Mitchell, 70, his wife, Janet Andrenada, 53, and their three domestic helpers last Thursday, the newspaper reported.

He is also suspected in the killing of Briton James Porter, 51, and his 22-year-old Filipina girlfriend in their home a few days earlier. Police also suspect Dizon killed Canadian passport-holder Geoffrey Bennun, 60, and his 20-year-old Filipina girlfriend on July 12.

Police alleged Dizon shot his victims, all of whom he had known, with a 9mm pistol, then stole their electronic gadgets, which he then pawned.

Police said a pawn shop owner surrendered a laptop, camera, and cellular phone which were believed to have been pawned by Dizon.

Authorities said Dizon seemed to have an “abnormal obsession” with gadgets, as he robbed his victims of their laptops and other digital equipment, leaving behind jewelry and other personal valuables.

“It is possible that the suspect wanted some information on the computers that could enable him to transfer bank accounts or get access to the pensions of the foreigners,” city police chief Senior Superintendent Danny Bautista was quoted as saying.

Luisito Tan, a police commander, told the Philippines Inquirer that an expat living in the city, who asked not to be identified, has offered P100,000 (US$2,168) to anyone who could provide information that would lead to Dizon’s arrest.

The Philippines has the natural resources to be a wealthy country and completely wipe out its foreign debt. Mark my words. Look it up if you want (US$1 trillion in untapped mineral wealth). Similarly, Afghanistan has mineral resources in the range between $1-3 trillion.

I am 1/2 filipino. I was born and raised in america. This story saddens me greatly. No one has the right to play God and take a life. As for the age difference of the victims it doesn't matter. Once someone has a filipino woman they never go back. Google this my friends "LBFMPBR" It is true and i'm proud of it. ; )

I am a 45 year old Filipina raised here in the US. I'm an old geezer (but I lift weights, am training for a marathon, drink lots of water and don't smoke so I have a tight fit body and a smooth face) so I had never heard of "LBFMPBR" (ya learn something new every day) and you know what? It fits! It's so true! My late husband basically said as much, as does my fiance (who, by the way, is younger than I...okay by two months but hey). And there are several gentlemen – both young and older – who were devastated when I told them I was engaged and they could no longer enjoy my favors.

I believe it's because we Filipinos are a spiritual and sensual people. We have a joy, an enthusiasm for life. I don't agree with older guys preying on much younger women but I can understand it.

It seems to me that this guy is not a serial killer but a robber that kills anyone standing in the way of the electronic gadgets that he sells to pawn shops. He has probably killed many Filipinos too for their electronic gadgets. Expats can probably afford to purchase more of these items and so are targeted. The old Clark Air Force Base was near Angeles City and a lot of servicemen retired or stayed in the area when the Base closed down so there is a large U.S. expat presence there.

Google Mount Pinatubo eruption and you will learn why the USAF decided that it was a bad place to locate an Air Force Base.

Hey guys lets spend more time trying to catch the guy and give our condolensences to the Men who were killed. I dont think it should matter what nationality the victims were they were all people with loved ones who mourn their loss. As a side note I travel to Phillipines back and forth from L.A. . Ive had my car stolen 3 times in L.A. been mugged twice at gun point in L.A.and been in a "takeover" restaurant robbery in L.A. . Never had anything happen to me there in the philippines geez I think its probably much safer in Metro Manila and Clark Zone than most of our American cities. been going back and forth since 1995.

its very saddening to read this kind of news and it is much more saddening that the news has blown out of proportion.i mean the Phil government is in search for this serial killer and some people here put malice behind the victims' may-december relationships..i am an expat living here in the phils and it is true that SOME poverty stricken filipinas would like to marry rich foreigners to get away from poverty.Phils has full of university graduates but still no job is available 4 them that's the reason why they wanna marry some foreigner to escape from these harsh realities. But then, not all pretty filipnas would dig Dirty old men (sorry 4 saying) like in any countries women here are attracted to handsome guys and eventually marry someone with sense..this phenomenon is ubiquitous even in states...a filipina who married my uncle's best friend was not in for the money.like the relationship just evolved.she is a doctor and highly educated.she told me the reason why she married uncle pat despite age differences & eventhough guys are flocking around herjust because she had found true love, respect for his wisdom, solace and had given her confidence. She is loving and very faithful. She told me that she had never been with anyone else before uncle pat and that surprised me.Wat shocks me more was when i entered university like 28 out of 30 of my filipina classmates are virgins.man, thought im for a wild ride here..anyways,i never heard of this news on tv...

Philippine police use Facebook in murder arrest

    (AFP) – 1 hour ago

MANILA — Philippine police on Wednesday said they used Facebook to track down a Filipino computer technician blamed for the gruesome murders of nine people, three of them foreigners.

The suspect, Mark Dizon, 28, was captured by police Tuesday in San Fernando City north of Manila after his father, fearful that his son would be killed in a gunbattle, arranged to meet him.

Dizon was initially identified by witnesses through his Facebook account, where police found out that a daughter of one of the victims was an ex-girlfriend.

"He had an account on Faceboook and two witnesses positively identified him," Senior Superintendent Danilo Bautista, chief of police of nearby Angeles city where the murders took place, told AFP.

"He did not brag about the killings on Facebook, but we found out that a daughter of Albert Mitchell was a former girlfriend."

He said Dizon apparently closed his Facebook account recently after sensing police were on his heels, but two witnesses had already positively identified him using his profile picture.

The suspect tried to pull out a gun when police pounced on him Tuesday, but he was quickly subdued, Bautista said.

Dizon is suspected of killing American Albert Mitchell, 70, Briton James Porter, 51, and Canadian Geoffrey Bennun, 60, their three Filipina partners and three Filipino domestic helpers in separate attacks in Angeles this month.

All the men were retirees and lived in separate gated communities that are popular with foreigners in Angeles, which lies outside a sprawling former US airbase, Bautista said.

The good-looking Dizon allegedly befriended the victims first to gain their trust, allowing him to go into their homes freely on the pretense of fixing their computers, Bautista said.

He then allegedly attacked them using a 9mm pistol, and robbed them of valuables including electronic gadgets which he then pawned.

Murder charges will be filed against Dizon later Wednesday, Bautista said.

"We have an air tight case against him. I believe it is ironclad," he said.

Well strangely, in this news he is thought of a serial killer who kills for the gadgets... He is from a well-off family and according to police had a fascination with guns! Just look at the photos here: http://philippinesphil.blogspot.com/2010/07/angeles-city-killer-his-photos-are.html

In Facebook, he was also friends with the daughter of one of the victims. A friend of her family showed his photo on the popular social networking site to witnesses to help identify him, police said.

As for the comments on how great Filipinas are, let me just say that there are SOME Filipina women who seeks a foreign partner because of how SOME MEN treat their women here! I bet why Dizon's gal fled to the US and married an American...
