Bill Cosby: I'm alive. Now, please cut it out

Bill Cosby is used to winking at internet rumors of his death. But after another one spread Monday, he said he hopes people will give the hoaxes a rest.

After false news of Cosby’s death spread by Twitter on Monday - "Bill Cosby died" was a trending topic on the microblogging service - the 73-year-old comedian talked to CNN's "Larry King Live" to prove he still is around.

"I don't want [whoever spread the rumor] to do this anymore, because this is my fourth time being reported [dead]," Cosby said by phone to CNN’s Kyra Phillips, who was sitting in for Larry King on Monday night.

Cosby used his wit to counter previous rumors. After the first, he borrowed a Mark Twain quote about reports of his death being an exaggeration.

But Cosby said Monday's rumor felt different. He said it left one of his friends in tears before he realized it wasn’t true.

"I don't know. Maybe a psychiatrist will say I'm feeding [the rumor starter's] ego, but I just want to say to friends of that person: Just tell him to stop, because it isn't funny."

On his own Twitter account, Cosby still went for a bit of humor Monday when refuting the rumor.

"Again, I'm rebuttaling rumors about my demise. But, I'm confirming I have an app," Cosby wrote before linking to an iPhone application featuring clips of the comedian's performances.

Obviously the person that is doing this is a complete loser and has no other prospects for getting attention.

OMG Larry King must have died! Why else would Kyra Phillips be hosting his show? (OK, alternative possibility: Fellow septuagenarian Mr. King didn't want to go one and one with Cosby about the Grim Reaper and all. I can understand that.)

You're right. He'll have to call Wolf Blitzer to tell us he's really dead.

He was funny in 1985....now he's just going around talking about race and stiring up controversy.....i wonder what he would think if a white guy had an all white crew working on a tv show, just like he did, except his entire crew was black. Noooooo, that's not racist at all.

Don't white guys already have all white crews working on their shows? And someone needs to point out to black people that some of what they're doing is just plain stupid and blaming all of their problems on white people is even more stupid. As a black person, I can honestly say that our problems won't get fixed until black people stop sitting idly by waiting for someone else to fix their problems and take charge of their own destinies. There are no free rides or hand outs in this life. You want something, you gotta work for it. He did and a lot of others before and after him did too. It can be done. Kudos Cosby. Stay strong, black America. And everybody, let's all love each other. There's enough hate in the world already, huh?

      @Morgans,

Obviously, you don't know near enough about Bill Cosby. I had the pleasure to meet him nearly 20 years ago as an elementary school student at a brownstone he owned in NYC. The man was wonderful then and I have even newfound respect for him now. Why: well, you bring up the fact that he "stirs up race debates, etc.." Evidently, you don't realize he's addressing the black community directly and telling them to be responsible and take care of their own problems. He wants fathers to "be fathers" and not just another number. He's taken a lot of heat from "the so called race baiters" you so eloquently refer to. I'm an American who happens to be black and I support him all the way on this one. Black people do need to hold each other accountable for our shortcomings. I never blamed anyone for anything. I just looked adversity straight in the eye and went about my business (ie., stayed in school, studied and made wonderful personal and professional relationships). All I'm saying is that he's a role model for every American.

Wow, do you have it wrong. Cosby has done more for race relations than any person in the last 30 yrs. Not by preaching but by example.

Jay Sandwich, the director of alot of the show's is white so your little theory is like swiss cheese, why are you playing the race card anyway?

We are really happy to hear that Cosby is there alive to make us laugh with his innocent jokes. People could easily solve many of their health problems, when they gain happiness, laugh, enjoy with what they see and what they hear. We pray for Cosby's health and long life.

He was the one that started the rumor. What has he done in the last few years! Nothing so he wants so media time...so who cares!

Just because this is something you would consider in order to bring attention to yourself, doesn't mean BC would. He's done quite well for himself. You, we're not so sure.

What has he done in the last few years? Not die, apparently.

And when you get to be 73, you tell me that isn't an accomplishment...

The media should not be prematurely reporting his death. It is his career that died many years ago.

He's 73! Let's see how effective your career is at that age...

I suspect he is retired, living off of investments and residuals. Perhaps he gives a talk or speech here or there.

Now that I think about it, there is a show on Nick Jr (Little Bill) written by him. Apparently his career is alive and well after all...

Remember, he did get a Doctorate in Education, specializing in Elementary Education - he was not just a comedian.

Bill: Years before you had a TV show I ran around and told everyone that you should have a TV show. Seriously. Anyway, you're cool and a winner who has brought many of us a lot of joy. I'm sorry you have had to put up with all this garbage from some no-life loser in need of help. Best wishes!
