Six teens drown in Louisiana river

Six teens drowned after they waded into unfamiliar waters and fell into a deeper part of the Red River in Shreveport, Louisiana, officials said.

One additional member of the group was rescued, Shreveport Assistant Fire Chief Fred Sanders told CNN.

He said no one in the group of teens, who ranged in age from 13 to 18, could swim.

The victims were part of two families, and three of the victims were brothers, he said.

Divers on scene said the river bed drops from a shallow area to 20 feet, Sanders said.

People nearby heard the teens screaming for help, CNN affiliate KSLA reported.

Local ministers were in the area counseling grief-stricken family members Monday evening, KSLA said.

"Please lift this family up in prayer," Shreveport Mayor Cedric Glover told KSLA.

Why wouldn't their parents or guardians take time to teach them how to swim or at least float? I'm not talking swim-team swimming, but come on... the "doggie paddle." Basic, elementary skills could have saved lives. This is so sad.

You must have either had a pool in your yard or neighborhood. If they parents were never taught to swim or float, how could they teach their children. You know they've probably when in this river before, but the drop off was probably sometime that happened gradually, so how could they have known? If it was your sibling / child, you'd jump in too regardless if you knew how to swim or not. Its a natual instinct to try and save them, swimming isn't.

Another example of how Obama is ruining this country....right? He should have insisted that all children be taught to swim...right? It's his fault, ...right?

George that is one dumb comment from you. It shows how bright you are.War crime Bush and his pals did more harm than Saddam in 8 yrs while running the world and the USA. So stop while you are sober. I was a Republican for 22 yrs until Bush destroyed so many things. IT will take Obama and the Democrats years to fix what Bust destroyed in 8 yrs.

Sure, Blame OBAMA, WHEN FOX NETWORK REJECTS JESUS AS THE CHRIST AND SON OF GOD BECAUSE OF HIS COMPLEXION. BUT ONLY BLAME OBAMA IF JESUS COMES TO OBAMA ASK HIM TO PRAISE GOD DENOUNCE THESE RACIST & OFFSPRING OF SATAN AND THEN OBAMA THROWS JESUS UNDER THE BUS TO PLEASE THESE IDIOTS

Um, I think George was being sarcastic. At least, I hope so. What a sad story, and after reading all of these cruel comments, what a sad commentary on our society today. Six children died. It doesn't matter who is to blame for the tragedy...let's mourn the loss and learn from the mistake, shall we?

Think about this one people. I WOULD MUCH RATHER DROWN, TRYING TO SAVE MY CHILD OR RELATIVE THAN TRYING TO LIVE THE REST OF MY LIFE KNOWING THAN I DID NOT TRY TO SAVE THEM SIMPLY BECAUSE I DID NOT KNOW HOW TO SWIM. I AM 64 YRS OLD, CAN U IMAGINE LIVING WITH THE NIGHT MARES FOR 20, 30 50 60 YRS THAT U DID NOT DO ANYTHING OR TRY HARD ENOUGH TO SAVE THEM

What a bunch of morons!! Can't swim and playing in the water, now that takes some smarts. Why in the world would these kids not know how to swim, let's see because they were never taught how, and why not!!

Not everyone has a pool, a boys and girls club, or a YMCA. With that being said, if the parents did not have the funds to take the kids to lessons, if you have 3 children and it is close to 300 to take them to lessons, a bill isn't getting paid, or a child isn't being fed. Not everyone has the money or the resources available for their children. A lot of places are poor you won't be able to find things like swimming lessons, horse back riding, or whatever...

The stupidity is that these kids at 13-16 or so didnt know how to swim. My 3 kids, now in the early teens, knew how to swim since they were 6 and 7 yrs old. Is not too difficult to teach a child how to swim. Parents and school are the ones to blame. A black child knows how to play hood and football.
Another important reason as to why black children cant swim and this came up while talking to some of my black friends is, at least on girls, that they dont want to get their black hair wet. Sounds stupid but when you think about it, black girls spend lots of money getting their hair straight and looking like white or Italian girls. SO they dont want to get that hair wet at all or showing their real hair. They need to hide it and want to be seeing with straight hair. When was the last time any of us saw a black girl with an afro or their natural hair. Why are black girls not proud of their hair and been black? Where is that "Black is Beautiful" crap?
. As stupid as it sounds this is a valid reason as to why girls dont learn how to swim. I wonder how many of these teens were girls too. SHAME AND VERY SAD!!

Best is right, Darwin Award winners. First, they never learned to swim which is akin to waliking. Second, they walked into a river without knowing how to swim. Ding Ding Ding – you are the winners of the award.

I'm terrified of the water and can't swim; so guess what? I don't go near water–not even to the beach, I just don't put myself into that position. I hope to one day learn. My heart goes out to the families; just tragic.

If your child fell into deep water and you couldn't swim, would you jump in after him / her? Yes you would... You wouldn't wait for help to eventually arrive.

Very tragic, but totally avoidable. I heard today their parents may sue. Who would they sue, God?

they're gonna sue the river and i'm guessing they're not past HS education to blame their own negligence on not teaching their kids to swim on the river. "dang nature, you're scary!"

Folks think about what you are saying. Of course the kids didn't go into 20 ft deep water. There was a sudden drop off (unmarked?). I am however surprised that none of the adults knew how to swim & thought it would be safe to take a large family that close to the water with some precautions. Its just so so very sad.

If these teens couldn't swim, has anyone talked to their friends, their relatives, their teachers to see
if this might – and I say, 'might' – be a suicide pact? I shudder to think this, but check everything, even
the impossible. Who knows what might turn up.

African American can't swim? Who's counting? And while you're a statistical genius, how many White Americans can't swim?
