Attorney: Iran officials decide to execute woman facing stoning

A second attorney representing an Iranian woman whose death by stoning sentence was under review told a human rights activist Thursday that Iranian authorities have decided she will be executed.

Mina Ahadi, spokeswoman for the International Committee against Stoning, said she had spoken to Hotan Kian, an attorney who attended a court session in Tehran Wednesday. He was informed that there would be no more appeals for his client, Sakineh Mohammedie Ashtiani, and that Iran's high court will decide within a week whether she will be stoned or be executed in another way.

AMAZING! 870 comments concerning seven dead dogs on a flight and only SIX concerning the possible execution of a woman. Where are your priorities?

Iran is a prime example of what happens in a country when religious extremists take over. They will kill whomever they please for the slightest infraction. Catholics did the same thing during the inquisition. Reformists did the same in England. That is the reason our founding fathers demanded a separation of Church and State. The religious extremists on America would be burning witches again if they had half a chance. We can never let our guard down. Freedom of the press, freedom of religion, the right to own firearms... all kep US free...http://primitivepolitics.blogspot.com/

Patrick, while I agree with your statement overall, you should know that alleged witches were not burned in America. They were hanged.

Vandar, they were burned. There were cases of burning alleged witches on stakes in Salem, Massachusetts' history.

or rather alleged burnings* Being from Massachusetts, there is evidence and reports to suggest so, but there is nothing particularly concrete. Although in Geneva, Switzerland over 500 alleged witches were tried and burned at the stake.. additionally dozen in England were too... Sad truths. I'm glad our societies moved away from this.. let's hope iran can do the same someday soon.

Stoning is a barbaric punishment for any reason. In our times it is beyond barbaric. As we know this was a method used in the time of Christ and before that. You have to remember that the Muslim religion is only 600 yrs younger than Christianity. Because of the teachings that we follow all the most violent forms of torture and execution have been abolished. Because of the restrictive teachings of the Koran and Muslim inability to progress into a more modern world with rights for women and free thinking lat alone free speech this kind of terrible atrocity continues. I believe it is due to their lack of self confidence.Knowing that if women were free they would speak up and the control the clerics have would dissipate We must all pray for the freedom of Muslim women

If Islam is a peaceful religion, then why do they let this cruelty continue. It doesn't make any sense. The religious leaders have to step up and stop this. Until they do, the world will never see them as peaceful. They deserve better. This cruelty will never change unless they make it their priority.

See why Iran needs to be taken off of the map? Iran is jsut like Iraq was. Saddam Hussein would kill thousands that stood against him even though they were peaceful. If Ashtiani is executed it will be another murder peg in the eventual downfall of Iran. If Obama does nothing about this and turns his back then he has turned his back upon the very principles of libery and is indeed not worthy of holding the office of the President of the United States. America can no longer turn our heads away from these acts of murder because when we do it is a sign that America approves of the murder and will do nothing to prevent such crimes from taking place which will enbolden the enemy to attack again and again while America says "Well it wont happen to me so why should I care?" If it happens to one American it happens to all of us so quit trying to run intpo the past when there was no war because we are at and every American had better suck it up and get on board with taking the terrorists out.

So the appropriate response to killing one Iranian woman is to kill millions more Iranians? Interesting logic, and by interesting, I mean psychopathic.

In a country that claims to be a part of the modern world, this is the opposite of what would be expected of an "enlightened " society .....and it is a total abomination. I have to wonder that it is being done in this way as an attempt to scare the women of their country into submission. Do they execute men this way? For the sake of humanity, and justice, please help this woman. Iran has shown over and over that intimidation and brutality are their preferences in controling their countrymen. Stoning women and chopping off heads and hands in public is disgusting. The only purpose it serves is to show the rest of the world how ignorant and brutal they are.

of course they don't punish the men. What kind of society do you think this is?? Women are cattle, men are citizens.

When a lion or hyenas catch one cow, the other cows can only watch and they will never try to rescue the one which is suffering from lion or hyenas. when humans are living in an animal kingdom, one person's death or suffering does not mean anything to others. The extreme views of some extremists are basically terrorising woman who are not abiding their extreme laws. It is much easy to punish women than men since they are weak and do not able to resist. No religion is peaceful or respectable unless women in that religion are respected and loved. In most religions, most men love their mother more than the father, sister more than the brother, daughter more than the son. Why this is not true with Muslims. For this reason, muslims are quite different from the rest of religions, I guess. The religion of muslims will remain un peaceful and unrest forever and they will continue to spread that unrest around the world. If we do not stop this 'terrorising women', we better start a third world war and get rid of extremists in every religion. It looks like, we at least know where to start.

It is horrible way to die, however, in eastern society this is the rules..this woman know the rule before she break it. It is not a form of punishment that seems humane to us, however when you read your bible you will see it was most common.

This is the rules? Are men stoned to death for adultery? And she may not even be guilty, she would be executed on her husband's accusation. These are the "rules" too..

that is the problem right there, in the past, over a thousand years ago from a time of uncivilized behaviour, and yet i had friends who are muslim say that this type of barbarism is not part of their religion nor in the Koran but it is being allowed any how by this country and these men??? a law that was brought back in the 70's from what i hear(unsure on that)?? it is scary to think that they live in a time that is no longer tolerated by the rest of the world and that they believe they are just in mutating the word of their god to do what they want....isn't that what the catholic religion did to cause the crusades?? pretty scary when you think about it huh? This woman should not be killed, she has already been punished and to do more against her is a crime in itself. is no one on the political level even listening? is nothing being done to save this woman from this barbarism? or is she to be made a martyr so the world will revolt against Iran and its horrific laws? I fear that if she dies there will be such a back lash against Iran and its people for allowing this that their gov't won't know what happened until its too late, my prayers and thoughts go out to her and I hope someone realizes how so out of control this is and puts a stop to it now. Thats a hint there President Obama because Prime Minister Harper won't do anything about it, we all know that already...which is sad in itself...

The problem is easy to understand : 13th century religious ideology still applied in a 21th century world. It's not uncommon. religious idiotry blinds reason. It happens all the time and it is killing untold numbers of innocent people. The solution : ban all religion, since it is a fake anyway.
