Kagan takes oath of office

Elena Kagan was sworn in Saturday afternoon as a U.S. Supreme Court justice.

Chief Justice John Roberts administered the oath at the Supreme Court building in Washington. Kagan beamed as a small invited audience cheered loudly.

The Supreme Court will meet in a special session on October 1 to hold an investiture ceremony for Kagan, Roberts said.

Kagan, the former solicitor general of the United States and former dean of the Harvard School of Law, is the fourth woman ever to serve on the nation's highest court.

The U.S. Senate confirmed Kagan on Thursday with a 63-37 vote.

She replaces retired Justice John Paul Stevens, leaving the court's liberal-conservative balance unchanged.

Now only four more crackpot neocons to go. Bye, bye Thomas, Alito, Scalia, Roberts. Soon the scourge of Bush-lite will be gone from the nation's highest court.

Actually, due to the Liberal Pregressionist actions, they may be coming back in full force. And really that's as good as a Liberal Pregressionist. Maybe they both need to be replaced or at least thinned out so they have not real power.

This is another truly sad day for the country. However, there have been so many since the Obama administration took office, they almost seem commonplace, now. Qualifications and competence are irrelevant, only an allegience to socialist idealogy and loyalty to those who wish to continue to erode our freedoms and concentrate power in the federal government. Elections have consequences, and we are paying dearly for the huge error we made in 2008.

You must be a stand-up comedian for the laughter your comments produce. Are you in the current century??? I can only surmise that you are a mouth piece for the fixed news and the RNC. Now a mistake.

Right! A McCan'r/Palin administration (Bush-lite 2) would have solved everything by now. Oh, except for the wars against Pakistan and Iran that would now be in its second year.

Hi Sarah! Love the kind words! Shouldn't you be making your comments on the FoxNews website? Maybe not... just gives me an opportunity to stand yet again on my soapbox. In your post you noted "Qualifications and competence are irrelevant, only an allegience to socialist idealogy and loyalty to those who wish to continue to erode our freedoms and concentrate power in the federal government" My first question is to ask you to clarify how Justice Kangan isn't qualified to be a Supreme Court Justice? She's had a fairly illustrious career if you ask me... serving as Dean, Harvard Law AND as the US Solicitor General. Pretty heady stuff if you ask me. My second question is to ask you to clarify what freedoms, exactly, are being eroded? I'd really like to know.

rdme1962 – If you paid intention to anything lately, you have the answer to your every question that you have Sara. I will add that anybody can have "fairly illustrious career" and still not be qualified for the prestigious position as a Supreme Court Justice. Especially if, during their "fairly illustrious career" they have shown the propensity to act unfair to a specific group, while stating they have fair to all. Thus showing that they have a lack of integrity.

You truly are a bit rusty, even for a Republican. Lots of talk, no examples. Just spout off those accusations and we, like you rednecks, are suppsed to just march along. Give me a break. Learn how to spell too, just ingrate.

May she have a long term of service on the Court – helping to protect us from the activist conservative justices. God Bless her and President Obama. A long and healthy life to the both of them.

I hope the prospect of 3 women on the Court causes Scalia, Alito, Roberts and Thomas so much heartburn that they have to take early retirement. "you go girls". For this I pray! There IS Justice. Good things come to those who wait and wait and wait.

Congratulations to Ms. Kagan, I wish her the best in her heavy duty of keeping our society functioning through the coming trials and tribulations we are sure to go through. I hope that the burdens of her responsibilities are not so heavy as they might be. For all of our sakes, good luck to her.

Just what we need: another liberal judicial activist. All of the riff-raff with an ax to grind must be celebrating over this appointment. Between Kagan and Ginsberg, let's see how many screwball rulings we can issue in favor of the whacko fringes of society. How about if the Supreme Court sticks to applying the law for a change?

Although I am happy and support that Ms. Kagan was nominated and chosen to represent the supreme court, I am disappointed that she took oath on the day of rest for her people. There are 6 other days of the week that she could have taken the oath.
