South Korean maneuvers draw threat from North

A South Korean navy ship participates in drills in the Yellow Sea this week.

Just two weeks after joint drills with the U.S. Navy, South Korea's military is carrying out five days of military exercises in the Yellow Sea.

The South Korean navy, army, air force and marines are practicing techniques for detecting and evading North Korean submarines and guided missiles, South Korea's Yonhap news agency reported Saturday. The exercise involves 20 ships and 4,500 troops, according to Yonhap.
The sinking of a South Korean warship in late March, in which 46 sailors died, was attributed to a North Korean submarine attack. The North calls the accusation "a fabrication."

North Korea said Friday it would "react with strong physical retaliation to the anti-submarine drill to be staged by the group of traitors in the West Sea," according to the official Korean Central News Agency.

"Our warnings are not empty rhetoric," said Rodong Sinmun, the newspaper of the North's ruling Workers' Party, according to Yonhap.

Kim Jong-Il is suffering from a case of meglomania. Pity. Look at North Korea as a failed business model. The CEO clings to his office as his employees lose their jobs. The obvious contrast is South Korea. Same people, different management.

It would be nice if someone crushes this bug and then Korean families can be reunited. Eventually all will do well. China will do better to have a stable neighbor. Hello China! Wake up!

Better for you to bow down and kiss the hand that feeds you. Wasted words I know, but I doubt you can imagine the world without America. Remember that Americans are people who left the messed up conditions in countries all over the world so be careful who you call " geocentric". Come visit some time.

i was careful.. i did say 'culture'.. and that's where the problem is.. its not in the land, its in the mentality of the citizens and the rearing of children...

Which culture is that? The USA is a country of many cultures. This is our strength. Our people are immigrants from all over the world, each bringing something to add to our collective "culture". I suggest you take advantage of your stated proximity and leave your small town for a time. Tour the USA and get to know some of the people. Count the "cowboys". You may want to move here and I'll be there to welcome you. I'll even buy you a cowboy hat, a white one. Best Regards, jK

divide and conquer... a large powerful and rich nation of many pockets of cultures of varying sizes.. what power do those people actually have?? none.. it is the "collective" that is deciding what's to be believed and what actions to take.. i have seen your many cultures.. its not at all the pretty picture your painting us... i have visited almost every state on continental US and some people's are having it a lot rougher the others, despite their efforts... read the headlines of media across your nation.. there is so much hate, resentment and fables about the many cultures that the collective doesn't want, or soon plans to take action on outside your borders...

@sm You are a liar. You probably don't know how many states there are, let alone visited them. As for the headlines in the newspapers ... that's what you get with a free and open society. If you had the same thing in north korea the newspaper wouldn't fit in the shacks these people live in due to all of the "nice" things everyone was saying about this oppressed society. Even their "one size fits all" military uniforms fit poorly. And that is supposedly their Holy Grail. Go to hell you little, little, man!!

free and open... how much do you figure it would cost you for 30 seconds of nation-wide airtime?? just because you say its free and open doesn't make it so... one truly open message vs. truck loads of BS drowns out the truth..

i didn't visit kentucky, tenn, alabama, miss, louisiana, north/south dakota and nebraska... i loved my time in the states and met many wonderful people of many backgrounds, wish i could have visited all other places and meet and spoken with more people... not a place in the world i wouldn't want to visit, but when you read about people in one of the most amazing, "free" and powerful country in the world.. casually stating that they should NUKE people while sipping their starbucks... it is frightening.. i'm not a liar.. but i am afraid of what I see happening in this beautiful country...

Oh sure gaga, how about you actually look at it through OUR eyes. Say some religious radical group comes and just, out of no where, blows up one of the most iconic landmarks in YOUR country. In the process, it takes out over 3000 people, including your own friends and family. To top it all off, to commemorate the site, we'll build a building on the site which represents the religious group that caused the destruction to begin with. You can not sit here and tell me you would NOT be salty over that? It's a flat out slap to the face.

Oh look... NK is threatening again...
NK said it would use nukes if the maneuvers happened.... Hm. No nukes were fired. NK might resort to the occasional minor incident (and yes, from a military standpoint, sinking a smaller ship is, "minor"), but doesn't have the balls to commit to any of their threats.

We Americans are the same people that all countries want us to help when they have had a devastation of some kind...earthquakes, tsunamis, floods etc. We are the same Americans that help other countries with their wars. If we Americans stop helping all the other countries, we would be better don't blame us Americans for always being there helping.

you are so correct. i agree with you 100%. and to whoever is repling to me think about why the USA wants your fuel, oil and energy. why use all of our own when we can use all of yours? then when we have to, we have ours still here. sounds like common sense to me. if you want to sell yours to us then great. when you run dry, we still have ours.

who causes these problems? again i ask you to THINK before you answer. only a certain few egos cause these issues. i would love to stay on my coastline to leave you and the other radicals to fend for themselves. but the world wants us, the USA to be the police. united nations just talk. think before you talk, just like the 3rd world egos and you just might say something worthwhile.

well, keep telling yourself that. i am still willing to help my fellow neighbor. but to be a good neighbor you need to finish the sentence since we Americans cant according to you. one more thing, look at the past history of America coming to the protection of Europe, Asia. and think about how your would would be if America didnt come to help in the past century. i must be off to spend the afternoon with my family.

Just in...a North Korean submarine has failed to respond to radio calls. The North Korean government is stating it is due to failed equipment, not because the US and South Korea just happen to be conducting anti-submarine drills in close

if north korea has nuclear weapons then they should be eliminated, find the weapons and destroy them before they have a chance to use them. nuclear weapons should be illegal for any country to have (america of course is an exception) .

Those of you that believe the threats coming from North Korea are empty had better be prepared for them to do something stupid. What North Korea does not fully understand is that this is not 1950 and the fire-power of the United States and South Korea is not M1 carbines.
North Korea is on the verge of complete starvation and it's people, while brain washed, are in no shape to fight a long protracted war.
It is my guess knowing how close North Korea's military is to the South Korean capitol, the United States and South Korea would quickly send North Korea back to the stone ago in fact as well as where they are now, by the way they treat their own people.

We already tried that and it didn't work then!!! What we have to do is what we are doing in Afghanistan and Iraq!!! Get the People to be able to take car of themselves... Not as a fighting machine because that they already are... But how to get their people to work so that the Country will better themselves!!! they have to learn that making weapons isn't the best way to them to survive...

north korea already proved they were all talk, before these drills began mr kim said that they would consider it an act of war and that a response would be immediate and dramatic and they would do everything they could to stop us. it was a bluff and an empty threat, now they say "were not making empty threats!"

if that was the case they would have retaliated 3 weeks ago. we called it and now they have not a leg to stand on.
