South Korean maneuvers draw threat from North

A South Korean navy ship participates in drills in the Yellow Sea this week.

Just two weeks after joint drills with the U.S. Navy, South Korea's military is carrying out five days of military exercises in the Yellow Sea.

The South Korean navy, army, air force and marines are practicing techniques for detecting and evading North Korean submarines and guided missiles, South Korea's Yonhap news agency reported Saturday. The exercise involves 20 ships and 4,500 troops, according to Yonhap.
The sinking of a South Korean warship in late March, in which 46 sailors died, was attributed to a North Korean submarine attack. The North calls the accusation "a fabrication."

North Korea said Friday it would "react with strong physical retaliation to the anti-submarine drill to be staged by the group of traitors in the West Sea," according to the official Korean Central News Agency.

"Our warnings are not empty rhetoric," said Rodong Sinmun, the newspaper of the North's ruling Workers' Party, according to Yonhap.

To Larry Valencia: First off, you can't compare the Koreas to Muslim fundamentalists because they aren't killing innocent people with suicide bombings or decapitating American and other foreigners over religion or occupation. Second, these are completely different countries divided by decades of political, social, and economic conflicts. The North Korean people and military are brainwashed and have been for most of its modern history as isolated communists. The South is pretty much an American-based Asian nation. They are economically and politically stable. As long as Kim Jong Il is in power and the communist regime reigns in the North, the Koreas will always have tension because of their deep history with each other. Plus, even if they united, the people in the North are so brainwashed over generations that they would not even be productive and successful civilians in a free market, free political society. They would be so lost in the modern world because they have been so isolated for years. But they are nothing like Muslims and the radical terrorists.

If we weren't there as a country they [SK & NK] would be at each others throats. I say let them take each other out that would be one less war to fight for us. We already have two going on right now.

    to Larry Valecia, Calif.
    what's wrong? North Korea.
did you even read the entire article? South Korea have been trying to get closer to the North but it doesn't really work out when they are blowing stuff up and killing people and just attacking a South Korean warship.

this is a carry over from the Cold War. the united states is too scared to press china.

To the non-Koreans who are running their mouths thinking they have a solution: learn the history. at least educate yourself on what exactly happened before you start suggesting what to do. At the end of the day, this isn't your country. these aren't your people. therefore, your opinions are short sighted and do not have the best interest of the country as a WHOLE. It was the Cold War divided my country. It was all about Democracy vs Communism and they tore our country in half trying to make a point (anyone hear of the "domino theory?").

You honestly think that you're so smart that no one else thought of these ideas? Larry, Your ideas are about as invalid as it comes.

Thank you Eisenhower. If he would've just let MacArthur drop the bomb, although our country might have become a nuclear wasteland, at least we wouldn't have to deal with this crazy jerk. you Americans love bringing impoverished people into your country as refugees anyways.

Wow, a man just says he doesn't understand something and rather than anyone trying to help him understand he is attacked....hmmm kinda like the whole worlds problems. People react and say and do things without an understanding. First off the U.S is there b/c South Korea is apart of NATO, being such if they are ever attacked on their home soil the U.S is required to lend aid, thus we are entirely within our right to be their. Secondly North Korea attacked due to the political change that occued in the county when whats his bucket put his son in charge. The son needed to show that he can be a strong leader and since their goverment is based around their military he deemed it to be the best way to achieve that. I agree the situation has gotten well out of hand, but it won't go beyond everyone flexing it's muscles. The world is too globalized in every aspect to risk another world war.

It would not cause a world war! No one cares about North Korea! And we will one day have to enforce military actions against them! It will happen...I'm not saying anytime soon! We just need to eliminate those dirty little tunnel rats before they do something really stupid! Like launch a nuclear warhead and cause mass casualties!
