Thursday's intriguing people

Ken Mehlman

The former RNC chairman and campaign manager for George W. Bush’s 2004 presidential bid has announced that he is gay.

"It's taken me 43 years to get comfortable with this part of my life," Mehlman said in the Atlantic. He is now calling for the legalization of gay marriage.

Mehlman said that if he had publicly declared his sexuality sooner, he might have played a role in keeping the Republican Party from pushing an anti-gay agenda that included linking homosexuality to atheism and the Federal Marriage Amendment

He said he plans to be an advocate for gay rights and that he is still a Republican.

Ahmed Sharif

Sharif, a New York City taxi cab driver, will speak during a news conference Thursday calling for an end to the anti-Muslim rhetoric that is gripping the city because of a proposed Islamic cultural center near ground zero.

Sharif was slashed across the neck, face, shoulder and hand Tuesday while transporting a passenger in his cab.

According to reports, Michael Enright, 21, got into Sharif's cab and the two had cordial conversation. Then, reports say, Enright started cursing at Sharif and shouted "Assalamu Alaikum, consider this a checkpoint," before slashing him.

Sharif was able to escape and flag a police officer, who arrested Enright.

Enright has been charged with attempted murder in the second degree as a hate crime, assault in the second degree as a hate crime, aggravated harassment in the second degree as a hate crime and criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree.

Sharif, a Muslim from Bangladesh, has lived in the United States for 25 years and been a taxi driver for 15 years, according to the New York Taxi Workers Alliance. He has four American-born children.

Mary Bale

The English bank worker has apologized for sticking Lola the cat inside a garbage dump, an act caught on video and shown around the world.

Bale said she is “profoundly sorry.”

“All I want to do is put things right,” including apologizing to Lola’s owners Darryl and Stephanie Mann, her neighbors in Coventry, England.

The 4-year-old gray tabby was walking along a wall when Bale stroked its back and urged it to come to her. Then Bale picked it up and dumped it into a trash bin.

Bale faces possible animal cruelty charges, officials said. She hasn’t explained why she did it.

Telegraph: Dumping cat was 'misjudgment' culprit claims

Joyce and Chuck Linkey

The retired couple was set to move into their new home in Pass Christian, Mississippi, in five days. Then Hurricane Katrina hit. Water, mud, debris and garbage obliterated their home, along with 1,800 others in the city.

“All the devastation was here,” Chuck Linkey said. “You drove down the street and you felt sick. Even coming in and out you’d say, ‘Who’d want to live here?’”

Their children begged them to relocate, but the Linkeys chose to rebuild, hoping others would return. Chuck Linkey, a retired contractor, did a lot of the work himself.

When neighbors began to return and rebuild in his community, he offered them his tools to use.

"We lived out here two years with absolutely nobody. You woke up in the middle of the night, you didn't have street lights. You didn't have nothing," said Chuck Linkey.

Now, neighbors credit the Linkeys for encouraging them to come home.

Ken Mehlman is a slime ball. Before telling others how to be since an RNC chairman should be a paragon of the Republican platform, which is a scripted, he should be honest with himself. Moroever, this isn't new news. He's long known to have been gay, e.g., watch the 2009 movie "Outrage."

I may be the only one left on this planet who feels that gays are threatening the very fabric of our existence as the human race. See how the gay movement is decimating countries in Europe. Childbirth is zero, family has become a dirty word. What is there to be proud of by being gay? Has the whole world gone crazy?

We're not threatening you. First, as for gays "threatening the very fabric of our existence as the human race," and "gay movement ...decimating countries in Europe," both are totally conclusory, unsupported, and false. Straight people largely give birth to us. Also, gay people can have children too. Second, as for "Childbirth is zero" isn't the fault of gay people. Have more kids – no one, save China maybe or the like, is stopping anyone from doing this. . Third, "family has become a dirty word" is not true; instead, it's just not as exclusive and limited as you want it. Family is good. Finally, as for "proud," the point is that a gay person can be proud of themselves for having the courage to come out and face adversity like this. Being gay, in and of itself, isn't the point of being proud.

I agree. I think the whole world is has gone crazy. When did it become okay and even encouraged to openly defy Biblical standards? Why is it that is they are gay...that is totally okay, but if we say that is wrong, we are considered intolerant??

Whoa there now! Don't panic Dave! I think the very fabric of our existence as the human race is quiet safe. Just steer clear of the RNC washroom after dark. You'll be ok.

ARE YOU SERIOUS? Non guys are ending marriages at an alarming rate, walking out of their children, cheating on each other, having babies without getting married. Do you think that the gays are responible for that also? You should hush up and you wouldn't sound so dumb.

Dave and Hmm – think of history. Any change causes fear in some. When African Americans were given freedom from slavery, there were those who claimed it would ruin everything. When women were given the right to vote, there were those who claimed this would ruin everything. When Martin Luther King was marching for the same rights that white enjoyed, there were those who claimed this would ruin everything. Your viewpoint comes from a long tradition of fear and confusion, not wisdom. The right of humans to marry who they choose is fundamental and will make things better for ALL. I promise you. Please rethink your views.

For so many, I know it is frightening to hear the truth. Never-the-less, all religions are false because they foster believe in magic and supernatural beings. Though it makes some people feel good and superior it's still a ridiclous lie and no more than a child's fairy tale.

How a person feels is no bearing on his ideals? What makes you think being gay automatically excludes you from being republican? The ideas of a party and the ideas of an individual are completely seperate.

When will people realize being REPUBLICAN or DEMOCRAT don't make the person.
