Terror suspect sang 'Complicated' on 'Canadian Idol'

Sher's appearance on Canadian Idol is splattered across YouTube.

Canadian terror plot suspect Khurram Syed Sher tried out for a spot on “Canadian Idol” in 2008, telling the judges he came to Canada from Pakistan in 2005 and performing Avril Lavigne’s “Complicated” when the judges voted for that over a Hilary Duff song.

Sher, who is actually a native Canadian, sings in a Pakistani accent while performing a series of strained dance moves, one of which is reminiscent of ice skating form. Which make sense when at the end of the performance a judge asks Sher if he considered being a comedian rather than a singer.

“Not really, I like hockey,” Sher replies.

YouTube: Watch the audition

That at least backs up what friends say about the London, Ontario, anatomical pathologist, who is a graduate of the McGill University Medical School, according to a report by CNN affiliate CTV.

"Friends say he's a fun-loving, hockey-loving guy who they can't believe been accused of being a terrorist," CTV's Roger Smith reported from Ottawa Friday.

According to CNN affiliate CBC, Sher traveled to Pakistan in 2006 to help with earthquake relief.

Sher was charged Friday with conspiracy to knowingly facilitate a terrorist activity, according to the CBC report.

"How about leaning to spell first. (Should, would). You can't really call people retards and make and IQ test a requirement to post if you can't even spell you post correctly."

How about LEARNING how to spell first? (<– Question, not a sentence btw.) You can't really call people retards and make AN IQ test a requirement to post if you can't even spell YOUR post correctly.

Amazing how you criticize others of not spelling correctly when you have 5 mistakes in your 2 "sentences" already. Please don't be nit picky and learn to grasp the main message of the poster, not be baffled by a person's spelling mistakes. For if that was the case, I would have stopped reading comments from most people years ago...

I wouldn't allow our children to even THINK (they would have been accepted) about going to Stanford. It is a highly Muslim population w/ a multi-million dollar mosque. The Koran teaches violence, a man is "allowed" to beat his wife, not in the face nor in front of his children. Ok-Peace, yup. That's what is in the Koran. One of our children has a friend who is here from Iran and is Muslim. Her parents lived here for years. Now, they have moved back. Their child is a WILD thing. To send your children to a country you despise? Why not just keep them home. Why not just leave us and the rest of the world alone-then, and only then, will you be left alone. I feel sorry for the cabbie who was hurt in N.Y. but they have bred this fear. I, myself, am not afraid. I just believe we should get this war over with. Announce we are dropping numerous bombs. Period. If you are innocent, leave. If not, stay and pay the consequence. End of story. Never again will a 9ll happen, orchestrated by a spoiled-brat, who didn't receive enough attention from his father, therefore blamed the country his father & family enjoyed. What a brat. I hope he died (slow & painful) and that he now knows, as all terrorists will, there are no virgins waiting for them in Hell.

Also, with regards to this article, the fact that Sher participated in Canadian Idol is evidence that he is not a strict follower of fundamentalist Islam, which is important to consider. Whatever he is, he doesn't represent the most radical form of Islam

Fig: Because we look at motivations. Killing isn't just killing. By your logic, manslaughter is just as bad as murder. You have to look at motivations. If someone kills someone else but doesn't follow an ideology or creed that demands or condones tha tmurder, than obviously there is no outside force to attribute his actions too. However, when a Muslim commits terrorist violence and cites Islamic text and scripture to justify it, it's pretty obvious what his motivations are.

When an American Christian commits murder, as often happens, except for a few rare cases (about a dozen in the past couple decades) they did not do it in the name of their religion; they did it for one of a myriad of other reasons. When Muslims kill, they often justify it as protecting Islam, spreading Islam, promoting Islam, etc. Indeed, the Prophet Muhammad is recorded by Muslim texts considered authentic and reliable, such as the Sunnah, as having killed or ordered killed non-Muslims simply for being non-Muslims. So the Jihadis are simply following their prophets example. He is the al-Insan al-Kamil, after all

Mark, if Islam is a religion of peace, than it can withstand criticism like all other religions do, without folks such as yourself making veiled intimidating statements that like subtle threats.

Islam is not a religion of peace and any honest and objective reading of the Qur'an and Sunnah, and study of the Ulama and Fiqh, will demonstrate that.

      Frank,
Your posts are exaclty correct. However the key words to look at here are "he" and "they". You're saying that because this group of Muslims (whatever the number may be) used Islam as justification for killing, that the whole relgion is violent. That is EXACTLY the same as me assuming that Christianity is violent because a small group of people said they murdered because of their relgion. You can say it's different all you want, but I challenge you to prove it. And the numbers have nothing to do with it. There are many more Muslims in the world than Christians, so it stands to reason that there will obviously be more crazy Muslims than crazy Christians. That's the law of probability.

Ayman Zawahiri, the Al Qaeda number two, was a doctor by training.

At least one of the terrorists in the failed bomb attack at Glasgow Airport was a doctor.

Those are just examples I can quickly recall, but I remember reading much more. The point is, not every Islamic terrorist is a "fodder" acting under someone else's command. Occasionally, we catch a "smart" one (likely the mastermind) in the act, and these smart ones with medical and engineering degrees are the ones we should be worried about.

There are many terrorists out there. For instance, what do you call a group of people that go around protesting at funerals of our fallen soldiers, claiming that they deserve to be dead, that this country is asking for it? These are terrorists, as well. They called themselves christians, but nothing could be further from the truth. Terrorism is not exclusive to any one group.

      1. Because it is illegal in the US to base a hiring decision on religion
      2. Because Obama is a lawyer and believes they have a legal right to do so.
      3. Because if we dont support Pakistan with funds they will be only more willing to turn a blind eye to terrorists within their country (they have enough problems internally with terrorism against thier own people that if we were not funding them they would do nothing for us in the region).

John, it's not because it's Canada, it's because our immigration laws are terrible. Our government up here doesn't want to do anything about it either. 2 weeks ago a boat load of "refugees" show up on our doorsteps like unwanted guest without any I.D whatsoever and instead of turning the boat away they'll end up freeloading off our system as per usual. What's even worse is that there's 99.9% chance that there are terrorists on these boats too. I'll also add that these supposed refugees go back their homeand as soon as they get citizenship for business, vacation and to sponsor more of their freeloading families to come here.

I wish in all honesty that our government would take things like this more seriously. Sadly though I think it will take something happening in a major city like Toronto, Montreal etc. to get them to improve our laws.

      August 27, 2010 at 2:52 pm | Report abuse |
    • Taylor

      @Heather

Really? 99.9% chance of terrorists? Just because there are a group of immigrants, doesn't mean that there is likely to be terrorists.

And the original poster made a joke that we get the dancing singing terrorists, because it's Canada, you know the country where everyone is nice.

But somehow we get the dancing terrorists because our immigration laws suck. I don't know what hick part of Canada you live in, but here in Toronto where half the population is non-white, and having worked with and currently work with new immigrants, from Pakistan etc. I can tell you that the immigration process takes years, and is full of red tape.

And muslims on the whole are peaceful people, a small preportion have hijacked the national conversation, and have painted an entire religion as something to fear. Have you ever read the Bible? Aparently you're supposed to stone anyone who tried to convert you to another religion. I guess I should have done that when the mormons came by my house.

@Taylor-The hick part of Canada I happen to live in is in Ontario. Toronto to be exact and I'm going to assume your George Smitherman follower. 🙂

I too work with people of many different races and religions. Does it mean I dislike them? No. I do however dislike people who come to Canada and milk our system for what it's worth. And believe me people do all the time. Our laws our terrible plain and simple whether you like it or not. As a matter of fact many of our laws are way out of date for our times ( Young Offenders Act anyone? ). Let me ask you this. Say you or I went to another country to claim refugee status without proper identification what exactly do you think would happen? Do you really honestly think we'd be welcome with open arms?

I read the bible once. It's a boring fairytale. And as for religion in general they are all farces. Religion is for those who don't believe in themselves. Does that mean I dislike anyone who chooses to follow such nonsense? No. It's up to them if they want to believe in something.

Fact of the matter remains is that we live in a country that believes that we are not vurnerable to any kind of terrorist attack. It's not a matter of if but when plain and simple.
