Long-dormant volcano erupts in Indonesia

A volcano erupted in Indonesia early Sunday, causing thousands of people to flee their homes, officials said.

There are no reports of casualties or injuries so far.

"The situation is under control. Emergency response teams are already on the scene," said Priyadi Kardono of the National Disaster Management Agency.

Mount Sinabung in North Sumatra had been inactive for more than 400 years. It had been classified as inactive by the Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation.

On Saturday, the center issued a warning and ordered evacuation of a 6-kilometer (3.7 miles) radius around the volcano.

GOP response: Extend tax cuts, end stimulus, repeal health care act

Marco Rubio, the Republican candidate for Senate in Florida, said in this week's Republican address that his party's alternative to President Obama's economic policies "really isn't all that complicated."

The address features a somber Rubio discussing the issue most on the minds of voters – the economy.

Rubio outlined the three pillars of the GOP's economic plan: Extend the tax cuts that have been in place since 2001 and 2003, shut down the stimulus program and use the remaining funds to reduce the federal debt and repeal the health care bill passed by congressional Democrats and signed by President Obama in March. Gunfire exchanged near U.S. Consulate in Pakistan

A confrontation between gunmen and security forces near the U.S. Consulate in Peshawar, Pakistan, ended Saturday after the militants surrendered, a Pakistan military spokesman said.

Maj. Gen. Athar Abbas said the militants were taken into custody and two Pakistani security guards who were taken hostage have been freed. There were no casualties in the incident.

The gunfire started sometime between 5 a.m. and 6 a.m. (8 p.m. and 9 p.m. ET Friday) about 100 meters from the U.S. consulate, near military barracks and several other military and intelligence buildings.

All consulate employees are fine and the consulate did not appear to be the target of the attack, said Rick Snelsire, a spokesman for the U.S. Embassy in Pakistan.

Glenn Beck stresses faith in rally on anniversary of King's speech

Large crowds rallied by conservative talk show host Glenn Beck, among them the Tea Party faithful, descended Saturday where the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his famous "I Have a Dream" speech exactly 47 years ago.

People filled the park by the reflecting pool in front of the Lincoln Memorial in the shadows and echoes of the most pivotal civil rights address in America's history.

Some of those who marched with King said Beck had usurped the day for his own political gain. The Rev. Jesse Jackson told CNN that Beck was mimicking King and "humiliating the tradition."

Other civil rights activists planned to gather nearby with the Rev. Al Sharpton and his National Action Network and march to the site of the future Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial, just a few blocks from the Lincoln Memorial. It's possible participants in both events could cross paths.
