Man missing for 3 months found safe

A Kansas man missing for more than three months has turned up alive and unharmed, CNN affiliate KMBC reports.

Luke Stevens, 23, of Tonganoxie, Kansas, disappeared May 26 from the home of his father, Dan Stevens, according to the Kansas City Star newspaper's website.

The father's 1983 pickup was found 50 miles from home not long after Stevens vanished, but there was no sign of Stevens, KMBC reported. Sheriff's deputies, volunteers, dogs and divers scoured fields, woods, lakes and streams multiple times to no avail, according to the Star.

Then late Thursday night, the phone rang at Dan Stevens' residence. It was his son calling from Kansas City, Missouri, to request a ride home, just like that, both outlets reported.

Stevens, who is 6-foot-5 and weighed 250 pounds when last seen, had lost a lot of weight and seemed disoriented, said his mother, Joyce Stevens, according to KMBC.

According to the Star's extensive story on the mystery, around 3 a.m. Friday, Dan Stevens issued a concise e-mail to family and friends:

"Luke is home and safe! Was living in the woods near Longview Lake. Thanks for all the support. Dan."

Since when is it anyone's (that would include you) business where and why he disappeared? Last time I looked, he was of legal age & didn't leave a spouse or children unsupported. In other words, he had NO obligations to account for his actions to anyone. Selfish – quite possibly, however, definitely NOT illegal, therefore, why should he shoulder the cost? I don't like it either, but suck it up and bend over, buddy – that what we pay taxes for!

CNN dropped the ball on thus story; the article, as it's written, doesn't answer the basic questions that it raises (the Who, What, When, Where, Why, etc.) and if the family doesn't want to comment further, then CNN has no business even publishing the story to begin with.

Either publish the story in its entirety or leave the family alone and give them their peace... You can't have it both ways! Very poor journalism!

Running away from home at his age is a little disturbing to say the least. But, to each his own. Looks like his parents are glad he's home!

hope you find your dad. We had a case of a missing person in our area not too long ago missing for about a week or 2 he was found but not in the way no one wants to be found. So this does happen. who knows why ppl do what they do. Just grateful everything for this guy turned out right.

      Hello Jerry,

Same thing happened with my cousin's husband about 20 years ago. He went out for some cigarettes and never came back.

It must have been really rough when you were a kid.

I have an Uncle that disappeared when he was about the same age for about 3 months. He lost all memory, had various jobs and had even spent a few nights in jail. Even the FBI was called in. Several months later, he called home wanting to know if it was okay to come home. The conclusion was that he had some type of memory lapse which may have been a result of a childhood injury (He suffered head trauma when he was about 5). What is amazing is that he has lived a very productive life raising a family and a career as a successful engineer.
