Pope monitoring Iranian woman sentenced to stoning death, Vatican says

Pope Benedict XVI is monitoring the case of an Iranian woman sentenced to death by stoning and has not ruled out getting involved through diplomatic channels, the Vatican said Sunday.

As he has in the past in humanitarian cases, the pope would intervene if asked by authorities in another country and would do so through proper diplomatic channels, not publicly, Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi said in a statement.

"The Holy See is following the case with attention and participation," Lombardi said. "The position of the church, which is opposed to the death penalty, is that stoning is a particularly brutal form."

Barbaric? And yet the issue remains...what to do? Adultery carries a fine of stoning death, harsh...yes, but any less effective than the electric chair, of the gas chamber, or leathle injecfion? Who are we, outsiders of their culture, to tell them what means they choose to dispatch their convicted criminals? How would and DO we like it when a foreign country attempts to dictate us our policies and customs? But on the flip, it IS in fact barbaric and outdated, just as public beheadings and brave heart style "purification by pain" ralleys are. The problem in my eyes is trying to sway a group of people, a country...that allot of what they believe in is incorrect, let us not forget this country in particulars crimes and executions are rooted in their faith for the most part. So, everyone with an opinion and involved in the peace talks and the popes observation and potential "interference thru diplomatic channels" what would it take for you to renounce YOUR faith? Or what would YOU say should be the outcome of this particular incident? I know what I would say...

There are no words to describe such barbaric act. Then again the continue bombing and killing of innocents even during the supposedly 'holy' month of Ramadan is another example of the violence nature of Islam. Worst there is no condemnation coming from any Muslims/leaders of Islamic states. CNN, you run a special on Islam during this Ramadan. Why don't you also highlight the treatments of non Muslims living under Islamic rule? There should be plenty of sources for you to choose from. Don't just publicise the 'nice' part. You must try to be fair and show Islam as a whole, people can then make up their own opinion.

I have to first say that I can't imagine we live in a world where people die by stoning! However I do believe public forms of punishment in our country would do more to detour criminals. Think about it if the criminal new he could be forced to where a sign stating his crime in front of a city building. the crime rate would drop. But it's sad we live in such a world that would even consider to let men throw stones untill they have killed a woman or man. With that being said I believe that the country of iran has the right to set there own laws. If there people wont rise up then why should we.

Why do they call the Pope "holy see" when he couldn't even see his own priests molesting our children for decades? Perhaps his sight isn't that holy after all. That or he did see and chose to do nothing.

Here's an idea. Why don't the holy men just murder each other over their various fake gods, and leave the rest of us alone?

Yes! Bring the pope to justice along with all who knew. But noooo! The Pope caters to whatever government is in power. Do you really believe that with all of our intel services, we did not know of church activities long before they were made fully public? (nun and child molesting has been reported for centuries ya know)
